Description
A Yu-Gi-Oh Fan-fiction
------------------------------------------
Author's Note (June 2015): Hello again everyone! How are you? Are you doing well? I sure hope that you are! Well then! It looks like I'm still moving along with this work, a little at a time! Did you enjoy the last chapter? I must say that I enjoyed writing it, though I did manage to hit a few snags here and there, in regards to research, dialogue, and any other obstacle that I may eventually encounter during my creative process. Speaking of which, I recently tweaked Teana's dream sequence in Chapter 8, just slightly, to tie more closely together with a later scene in this chapter. For anyone interested in continuity, I would suggest re-reading at least that scene again. Aside from that little bit, I do like to think that I am making good headway with this story of mine, and I hope against hope that you *are*, in fact, enjoying it, if you've made it this far and stuck with me after SO long!
Speaking of which, I included a few things in the last chapter, which I hoped would be recognizable to some fans. The most obvious was Teana's dream as a whole, which I wanted to be reminiscent of the one Tea aka Anzu had in episode 52 of the anime. I must admit that this scene was one of my original inspirations for Teana's creation , soooo many years ago! I was very intrigued with the fact that Tea would actually dream of being in Egypt herself, and that it involved Yami aka Atem and NOT little Yugi! Though this scene did not appear in the manga, I still found it visually striking, wondering if it was a prophetic dream, or again, an indicator of a past life, perhaps!
Furthermore, Teana also mentioned the “curse of the blue eyes,” which I wanted to be a slight nod to Kisara, the one who originally housed the Blue Eyes White Dragon within her soul; who may or may not appear in this story... Not much was known about the fabled dragon lady's back story, other than what was added in the anime adaption of the “Memory World,” arc. However it was mentioned in both the anime and the manga, that she was nearly stoned to death for having blue eyes and light skin, thus proving how judgmental and superstitious many of the villagers are; a fact that sadly Teana herself is quite aware of!
Another subtle reference was Yami's line of “If that is what you wish...” For those who know me best, it is quite apparent that I am, and always have been, enamored with Dan Green's wonderful voice, and the manner in which he portrays Yami Yugi aka Pharaoh Atem in particular. Admittedly, I did prefer when his voice wasn't AS deep, like in Season 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh or when he portrayed other roles, such as Asato Tsuzuki in Descendants of Darkness (aka Yami no Matsuei) and the two title characters in Samurai Deeper Kyo. In addition, Dan also played a number of roles on Pokemon, and one role that came to mind was in the 3rd Pokemon Movie, “The Spell of the Unknown.” Within that film he played Entei, a legendary Pokemon who existed solely to protect and care for an innocent young girl. As such, that line was one that he used a *number* of times throughout the film as he fulfilled her hopes and dreams; which I must say reminded me very much of a similar one, in the movie the“Princess Bride.”
A more obscure reference dealt with the children Kebi and Tau, who spoke of Yami, in regards to his rather bombastic voice! After seeing a number of videos and interviews that featured Dan Green, he would often talk about how, though he greatly enjoyed voicing the powerful and heroic Yami Yugi, he would be instructed to purposefully make his voice booming and impressive sounding. He did this so frequently, in fact, that Dan often wondered himself if his fans believed that he spoke that way in every day life situations! I found that to be rather humorous, so I thought to include it within the story as an Easter Egg of sorts.
Though I am still uncertain how it is being received, I am continuing with the plot element involving the seductive pull of the Millennium items, and how, Zorc Necrophades wishes to use Yami as a vessel, if given the opportunity! I said quite a bit about that in my last chapter, and I still find it to be a fascinating struggle to attempt to bring to life within this work. I of course will *still* focus mainly on the relationship between Yami and Teana, but admittedly, I also can't help but *want* to explore some of these darker, thought provoking elements....
Lastly, I am also nearing the point where I will be able to connect these newer works with some of my old; though a considerable amount of re-writing will be necessary in order for me to do so! But for those who had wanted to know where the story would lead, after my original cut off point so many years ago, please be assured that I hope to arrive there once again, sometime in the future! Here's hoping at least! In the meantime, please continue to support my work and comment, as I find the feedback that I receive to be very *very* much appreciated; as well as being extraordinarily helpful in maintaining my momentum! Thank you again for everything! And until next time then!

Chapter 9a
*It's silly, childish even... I know I shouldn't think it, but- I wish we could just stay like this forever...* Teana thought, contently; savoring every second that Yami held her in his arms.
*For everyone else, I guess, this really is just a minor thing...this warm feeling, the sound of his heart thumping away like that... But for me...for me....it's more than I could have ever hoped to have, especially from him... I still can't believe this is real... I can't even remember the last time I felt so....safe.... Despite everything he- He makes me feel safe... Maybe, if I just focus on that, I can-*
“How are you feeling?” Yami said, in a hushed tone.
Reluctant to pull away, until Teana herself gave the word, Yami's right hand, which had been continuously stroking her hair, finally moved downward, to brush her exposed right cheek with his thumb.
“You no longer have tears in your eyes... I'm thankful for that. And quite relieved as well.”
*Right... I know, gods... I know... I suppose forever was too much to ask for, wasn't it?* Teana mused, wistfully. *By now, he probably wants to- But I am grateful for this, for this moment... Maybe I shouldn't expect anything more...that I could actually be fortunate enough to have- But no matter what happens, I'll always remember this... Always...*
With one final breath, as Teana hoped to etch the memory of the encounter into the deepest recesses of her mind, she inhaled his scent, while clutching the material along his back yet again; before she at last, forced herself to break free from his hold...
“Thank you, Yami....” Teana whispered, as she shyly met his gaze. “Thank you for- Well... Thank you for everything.”
“There is no need to thank me, Teana... It was my pleasure... Truly...” Yami said with sincerity.
As he then raised himself from the ground, Yami extended his hand out to Teana; a hand that she accepted, without the slightest bit of hesitation... And as the two stood, facing each other in silence, they simply regarded one another, both with an expression that spoke volumes...
“I must apologize... It would seem that I have once again disrupted your appearance.” Yami remarked with a remorseful glance.
“Oh?” Teana replied sheepishly, as her hands frantically began to feel the top of her head. Lowering them a moment later, however, she opted to shrug it off; without a care.
“Well, don't worry about it... I cried a lot, after all! I mean, I'm sure that didn't help much... But with you letting me, letting me cry until I couldn't cry any more, I was able to feel so much better... I can't even tell you...how much that meant to me...” Teana remarked, smiling again.
“But I guess the down side to all of that, is that I was probably going to end up looking like a mess, for one reason or another, huh?”
“No, Teana... Nothing could be further from the truth. But please, allow me...” Yami said, as his fingers began to brush through her hair, repositioning her scattered tresses.
Stifling yet another wave of shyness, and even giddiness, Teana took note of his own appearance, as she faced him again.
“Oh, wait. Your hood is a little crooked too...” Teana observed. “Here, now let me help....”
Pausing for only the briefest second, Teana reached upward to straighten the material over his head, making sure that it covered every trace of his own revealing and signature hairstyle, from the eyes of spectators. Lingering momentarily, her hands traveled down, to adjust and flatten the fabric around his neck, and then finally, his shoulders.
In doing so, Teana couldn't help but notice that a number of villagers were staring at them, murmuring underneath their breaths, as they scurried by... With realization dawning, as her eyes became wide and panic-stricken, Teana backed away, just slightly, with a look that alternated between embarrassment and exasperation...
“What is it, Teana? Did something happen just now?” Yami asked, looking out into the crowd.
“Hmm? Oh, no! It's just-” Teana began awkwardly. “-that it occurred to me how this probably looks to everyone...”
Without a word, Yami simply raised an eyebrow, inquisitively.
“Come on... Don't make me say it...” Teana whispered, as she began to shift uncomfortably. “You know... Me... You... Behind the table, all that time... Looking a little frazzled...” She trailed, using circular hand gestures to conclude her statement.
“Ah, I see...” Yami said, as he slowly and repeatedly nodded his head.
Though he, of course, made a genuine effort to contain it, Yami's mouth soon began to turn upward into a grin of amusement, and in all likelihood, self-satisfaction... Coughing intentionally, he promptly lifted a hand, in an attempt to hide his expression.
“It's not funny...! I mean it's not that I'm embarrassed that they'd think that I was with you, but- Wait! That didn't come out right! I mean you're you, and I'm me- And I certainly don't think- I mean, I'm not assuming that we're- ” Teana stuttered.
Groaning in self-aggravation, she placed both hands over her own mouth, as her newly widened eyes shifted from left to right.
“Anyway...” Teana sighed. “In all seriousness, this really could be a problem, in more ways than one... Already it has the makings of igniting a whole new wave of...things they'll say about me...” She continued, as she shamefully looked downward.
“Well, we can't have that... Hmm...” Yami breathed.
Gazing up at him again, as he spoke, Teana saw that Yami appeared lost in thought; contemplating deeply, as he looked out into the distance. Finally turning to face her, Teana could now recognize a noticeable change in Yami's expression! Unsure of how to interpret it, Teana felt that his eyes, in particular, had an air of inspiration to them; or was it perhaps...revelation? What followed was a very slight, but widening half smile, one that was also difficult for her to decipher, yet, it seemed to exude a mixture of tenderness, coupled with a rather distinct and focused intention...
Silently, Yami's arm raised upward, as his right hand began to, once again, gently run its long and slender fingers through her hair.
*Oh.... Is my hair still a mess? I thought he already-* Teana thought, surprised by the suddenness of his actions! *It's a nice feeling though... having him do that... But I don't think it'll help with-*
Stopping in mid-motion, Yami's hand repositioned a few stray strands of her hair, that had been resting near her cheeks, behind her ear and neck. Next, his hand moved down, as it lightly supported and held the side of her face. It lingered there, momentarily, until his thumb brushed against that now bare cheek; once, twice, three times...
“Yami....” Teana whispered, torn between her new found feelings of contentment, which contrasted with her sense of wary bewilderment. “Why are you-”
“Shh....” Yami said, in an equally hushed tone. “Please, just trust me....”
Again, his right hand had began to move, as it lowered, just slightly, until his thumb made contact with her bottom lip. Very slowly and delicately, it deliberately brushed against it as well; from one side to another...
*I remember... This is also like-* Teana thought, recalling her dream, once more.
And eerily similar to that vision, which had left such a lasting impression, her lips also began to tremble, as a result!
As the tips of Yami's fingers continued to caress her face, both in a graceful front handed and back handed motion, they moved further still, until they reached just below her chin. With only the faintest bit of pressure, he elevated her face, just a little, until her eyes, which she had averted meekly, once again met his.
Not having yet recovered from even those sensations, Yami persisted on, as his index, middle and ring fingers descended down her neck, grazed against its various muscles, until finally settling upon her left shoulder. Believing that it would stop there, as his hand briefly stayed in its position, gently stroking and squeezing that shoulder, Teana was further affected as those same three fingers coursed onward! They traveled down her upper arm, past her elbow and forearm, and at long last, they met Teana's own hand, at her side. Again Yami's hand remained there, fondling that hand, entwining his fingers with hers, before softly cupping it, clasping it, within his palm.
As Teana's mind spun, albeit vaguely, with questions, and as her body simultaneously tingled with each new and exploratory sensation, Yami wordlessly proceeded again, and in a fluid, chivalrous maneuver, he raised her hand higher and higher; until he was able to bring it to his mouth, to kiss it gently.... With yet another intense, incomprehensible look, Yami beckoned her towards him, pulling her gradually, carefully.... Mesmerized, and with only inches left between them, Teana could not even fathom what Yami had planned for her next, as she waited patiently; though admittedly with a rather dizzying anticipation!
Seeing him taking a step forward, and then another, Teana found herself strangely disappointed that he appeared to move past her, beyond the point for him to see such a telling expression on her face. But before she could dwell on it further, Yami had then repositioned himself behind her, so closely; to the point where she could not only hear the sound of him breathing, but she could now feel his warm breath upon her cheek. Placing his left hand upon her corresponding shoulder once more, his right hand briefly did the same, before moving completely around it; until his entire right arm encircled her upper body, just barely above her chest!
“There... I think that should suffice. Wouldn't you agree, my dear?” Yami whispered within her ear.
“Huh..? What do you-?” Teana breathed, still reeling from the experience.
“If my calculations are correct, the others will now believe that I am the one who instigated whatever it is they imagined occurred between us; a diversionary tactic, if you will... It matters not what the populace thinks of me, Teana. With this disguise, any and all blame could be shifted to the “mysterious hooded man,” who attempted to coerce you, rather than the reverse. Despite it being a reasonably standard maneuver, in this instance, I believe that it could prove to be most effective!” Yami quietly explained.
“So... What you're saying is...that it was all just an act...” Teana concluded.
Allowing herself a moment to come to terms with the situation on a more rational level, followed by a deep, orienting breath, Teana soon found that feelings of shock and even hurt were now beginning to emerge...
“Aside from the challenge of implementing this strategy, the notion to play such a part did overtake me in an instant! Particularly when I discerned that it could, in fact, be the solution to your plight! And as such, I took great care to appear subtle, yet convincing in the role. I considered every conceivable aspect, from the speed in which I performed, to the most prominent angle; which would ensure that my actions could be seen, clearly. However, there is the possibility that I was a bit too subtle in my execution. Perhaps more is needed to convey realism to this scenario. Would you like me to proceed further then...?” Yami inquired, gently strengthening his hold upon her.
Raising her own two hands, Teana briefly rested them upon Yami's encircling arm, as she contemplated... Moments later, however, surprising Yami, and even herself, she used them to remove his limb completely; allowing her to break free from his embrace. Uncertain of what to say or do next, Teana simply grabbed hold of her chair, pulling it forward in her direction. Sitting herself down, she finally rested her chin upon her folded hands.
“Teana...?” Yami began, his confusion audible, even in that one word. “Why did you-”
“Actually, you didn't consider everything.” Teana interrupted, shortly.
“I don't understand. I thought that this would-”
“It's just that- Never mind... It's nothing. Even I don't know what I mean... And I probably shouldn't be thinking-”
“No, don't stop. Please. As I told you before, I wish for you to continue to express yourself, without restraint, as you have done in the past... If there is something that you would like to say...”
“I wish that you'd told me what you were planning... If you had, I would have decided against it...for a number of reasons... You told me to trust you, and I did... But I never would have thought that you'd- Maybe it's hard for you to understand. And honestly, it's even harder for me to explain, but I'm not used to things like that; the things that you- It was different, you know? Different than anything that you've done before. I could tell by the way it affected me... And to think that you weren't affected, that you were doing it just for show... Maybe it's something that you have a lot of experience with... Actually it seems pretty obvious that's the case! And maybe for you, it really was just a minor thing, something that didn't mean that much; no matter what your reasons were. But for me-”
“I had no intention of-”
“It reminds me of the day that you ran into me in the streets, when the guards were chasing you...” Teana continued.
“Those soldiers were in pursuit of you recently too, weren't they? You and some mysterious stranger... Tell me, just what reason would they have to pursue you?!”
“I'm grateful for that moment... Believe me, I really am. If that didn't happen, you wouldn't be here with me now. I know that, and I'll even say...that I thank the gods for it; for every moment that I've been fortunate enough to spend with you... But at the same time... Though I've tried so hard not to think about it...” Teana paused. “Sorry... This really is hard for me to say... I don't even know if I should say it, but...”
“You should say whatever it is that you feel... Go on...” Yami replied, as he listened intently.
“It's just that...even then, you acted without thinking about what would happen afterwards. It's like...it was a game or something... Like you couldn't see past whatever goal that you set for yourself; what you were doing, or what you decided you wanted to do, in the heat of the moment... Or maybe you thought the ends would justify the means? I don't know... I don't even know if any of this makes sense, and I don't want to assume things that aren't true. That's the last thing I want. Honestly... But the bottom line is, I feel like you weren't thinking about how your actions would affect me, then or now... That's really all I cay say...” Teana finished, as she placed both her hands upon the surface of the table.
For what seemed like an eternity, the two simply remained silent, unsure of how to proceed, or how to disrupt the awkwardness that had come between them. Though she was now facing away from Yami, and had been, since she began speaking, Teana could still sense his movements from behind. And through those movements, she somehow felt that he had once again attempted to make physical contact with her, perhaps even several times, but was now hesitating to do so.
*I feel awful... I never wanted things to turn out like this... Especially after he- Maybe... Maybe, I shouldn't have said anything after all...* Teana thought sadly. *Even though he told me that I-*
“I meant no harm. I only wanted to help.” Yami said at last.
“I know that!” Teana agreed, finally turning in his direction again. Looking up at him, once more, she sighed before giving him a weary smile. “Despite everything, that's the one thing that I do know; how much you've done for me... How much you're always trying to help me... Please don't think that I've forgotten that. Not even for a minute... That's why it was so hard for me to- I don't know... Maybe it's me. Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive, or something. Or maybe I am wrong about-”
“You're not wrong...” Yami said, with a sigh of his own. “And in truth, you are not the first person to tell me that I- Well, no matter...”
“Come on... Please don't do that. Didn't you say that you wanted me to express myself, no matter what? Well, that goes for you too... If possible, that's what I want for the both of us...which is something else you said, remember? So tell me, what were you going to-”
“For the time being, I think that we should concentrate on finding a true solution to your predicament.” Yami stated, with a touch of sternness.
“You mean what the others saw... Or what they now think of me...” Teana said in a hushed tone. “Honestly, I don't know if there's anything we can do about it now. In the end, they'll think whatever they choose to think, regardless... Trust me, I have a lot of experience in this area... That's what I meant about it not being a good idea to- But yeah... There's no way around it, at this point. Anything else they see will only give them more reason to gossip, more ammunition to feed their long standing beliefs and superstitious natures... Unfortunately, that's how it always is...” Teana explained.
“Well then, I will simply have to divert their attention in some other fashion, won't I? I will even consider it to be a unique challenge that I must overcome; one that I will overcome for your sake... And it seems that I will have yet another opportunity to perform before a captive audience, though it will be a role of a very different kind, I assure you...” Yami said, finally returning the weary smile that Teana had given him. “However, two things will occur that will not be a facade, Teana; namely, the two promises that I will now make to you. The first is that I will once again supply you with an array of merchandise, for your benefit and care. The second, is a promise that I make to myself as well; that no one will speak to you in such a vindictive and inexcusable manner again; at least not in my presence!”
“Yami....” Teana whispered, touched by his words.
“Stay close to me at all times. Or rather...to whatever capacity that you deem appropriate... I want to always be aware of where you are, no matter how immersed I am in my task. And I want to be able to clearly witness how the others behave towards you, should I need to intervene... If luck is indeed on our side, it is my hope, rather than anyone thinking that we had dubious or questionable intentions for one another, that they will instead believe that you are now with me....”
“That I'm with you...” Teana echoed, now affected by such a notion.
“Are you ready, Teana? It's time to begin!”
The remainder of the day passed quickly within the village market place, and just as Yami had vowed, he certainly did manage to captivate a great number of onlookers, as he not only replicated, but far surpassed his previous achievements; skillfully bartering on Teana's behalf! Much like before, he was able to cast a spell upon any and all who approached him, with courteous, eloquent and impressively persuasive words! And in an attempt to alleviate any doubts the villagers may have had about the two of them, as Yami had also assured, he remained closely at Teana's side; for the entire duration of the afternoon!
Within that time, he took great care to include her in both his discussions and his negotiations; as awkward as it was for Teana to contribute to such mind numbing, back and forth exchanges! However, whenever it did occur, Yami would often acknowledge Teana's “proficient” skills, as well as her “meticulous” craftsmanship; as he then presented her various works, to those who took interest! And feeling that at least some physical contact was necessary to allay the rumors regarding them, Yami did indeed demonstrate their “relationship” to the crowd; albeit in a much more subtle way than he had initially exhibited...
Whenever the opportunity presented itself, Yami would place one or even both of his hands upon Teana's shoulders, as an example of the more innocent affection that existed between them. Even then, Teana still found such actions to be easily flustering, profoundly significant, and in a way, surreal... However, with every subsequent touch, since before they had commenced, Yami would discreetly lock eyes with Teana; as if he were first asking her permission to do so. Though she had been honest with him when she'd spoken previously, and in spite of the fact that such closeness was, in fact, both foreign and mystifying, Teana found that she somehow missed Yami's readiness to be near her; the bold yet equally tender feeling of his skin upon hers.... It was a warm, comforting sensation, one that somehow felt quite natural to her... And upon reflection, Teana realized that this was how she had always viewed it; perhaps from the very beginning....
But now, each movement of his was handled with such delicacy and precision; what Teana perceived as a noticeable detachment on Yami's part... At times, his fingers would even hover above her arm, or perhaps her cheek, which would still indicate what he wished to portray to his audience, but he would be sure to stop just short of reaching her...
Nevertheless, throughout the day, the two did share more than one unexpected occurrence... Whether it was purposeful or accidental, Yami would, for instance, reach for an item at the exact moment that Teana would; allowing their fingers or hands to overlap. Though she vaguely wondered if this was also part of the “ruse,” that Yami had proposed, given that such mishaps prompted both a smile and a lingering glance upon each of their faces, Teana wanted to believe that it was, in fact, genuine, for the both of them...
Having lost themselves within the success of their venture, neither Yami or Teana had realized that not only had the sun begun to set, but that the market was gradually clearing; being deserted, by both merchants and traders alike. Similarly, Teana’s booth, and all that she had brought with her that morning had also disappeared; only to be replaced by three times the amount!
“I don't know why I'm surprised, but- Wow... I can definitely say that you impressed me today! You were able to do all this! Again!” Teana exclaimed, as she gestured towards the surrounding merchandise.
Now alone, and able to converse freely, the two began organizing and sorting through those newly acquired items, upon the table.
“You really weren't kidding, were you...? Gods! Now that is what I would call a performance!” Teana continued.
Despite being legitimately enthused and awestruck, admittedly, Teana still felt uneasy about what had transpired earlier in the day... As a result, she hoped to lighten the mood with her praise, in addition to any sincere expressions of gratitude that she had yet to implement! However, she soon found that she was completely at a loss for how to convey this in some new way, as she could only gently clap her hands together, praying that even this small gesture would show her heartfelt appreciation.
Without a word, Yami simply bowed, gallantly; as if the motion itself had, at last, put an end to his play acting.
“I want to thank you again, but... I feel that just saying it isn't enough, you know? You're amazing... You really are. There's really nothing that I can say that can even come close to what I'm feeling right now... But, for what I said before, I wanted to tell you I'm sorry... I'm sorry that I-”
“You needn't apologize to me Teana... As I told you then, you were absolutely right; in regards to a great many things... In fact, you continue to amaze me with how insightful you are; how you can perceive and isolate such telling details; ones that even those who surround me can not. And yet, I will not deny that it was rather difficult for me to hear... If you can understand, it is in my nature to loathe imperfection; particularly imperfections that I may potentially posses! However, in stark opposition to this claim, I found your words to be quite heartening as well... It is as I said, during our previous exchange... I am pleased that you see me as a human being; one who is flawed and entitled to his fair share of mistakes...” Yami said warmly.
“It's strange but... I think I am starting to get that....” Teana reciprocated.
“In this instance, those faults were exactly as you described... I do often believe that my course of action is the correct one. I follow through with my instincts within seconds of identifying my primary objective, and I take immense pride when I am I able to succeed with this mode of thinking, both swiftly and efficiently! And yet, what I hadn't considered, was the time, the place, or, as you yourself said, who would be most affected by such exploits; namely you, Teana. I viewed your situation as if it were a trial of some sort; something to conquer or overcome. And as such, I behaved as I would have with any other form of opposition, which resulted in me losing sight of you in the process....”
“I do know that you were trying to help me... And I still feel bad that I got so upset... It's just that-”
“You believe that I completely disregarded your feelings... Despite even my best intentions, you felt pressured to take part in the scenario that I had devised; and this was done without your counsel, much less your consent... In truth, I find it to be rather ironic... I can recall divulging to you in such great detail, how my own thoughts and feelings would be dismissed; and how frequently this was done, to prepare me for my position of power. And it would appear, to my deep regret, that I inadvertently did the same to you... I'm sorry, Teana...”
“Yami... I... Honestly, I'm not quite sure what to say... That you would apologize to me like that... But I want you to know, it wasn't just about what happened... Like I said before, I'm not used to those things... In fact, I haven't had any past experiences with- Gods... Did I really just-” Teana cringed.
“Maybe I shouldn't even be telling you this. Any of this... But to be honest... I felt something... And I've never felt that way before. I thought maybe you- I guess what hurt the most was thinking that it was just some meaningless charade; that you felt nothing at all when you touched me... Not just then, but every time... Because it's something that you do often; maybe even with other-”
“No, Teana. I can assure you, that is not the case....” Yami declared.
Momentarily stunned by his admission, while questioning the exact meaning behind it, Teana gazed into Yami's face, finding that familiar, affectionate expression; the one that would immediately prompt her to blush, each and every time...
“Um... So.... Yeah... Your performance back there....!” Teana stammered in embarrassment; feeling the sudden need to change the subject.
“I feel like I just witnessed some closely guarded secret or something! I'm going to take a wild guess with this one, but I'm assuming that not everyone is aware that the crown prince of Egypt has a flair for the dramatic, am I right? I mean, I couldn't even keep up with you that time! From what I could tell, I think you were even more invested in the part than you were last time, weren't you? It's almost as if....you became someone else....”
Following a perplexed, and if she wasn't mistaken, a fleetingly disappointed look, Yami's eyes shifted downward.
“Someone else...” Yami echoed, now lost in thought. “Yes, its understandable that you would think so.... I suppose that at times, I would entertain such a notion... And it would appear that to this day, I continue to do so, in one form or another...” He continued, as he fingered his hood. “I believe that part of this stems from the fact that I do greatly enjoy having ones eyes upon me! I will not even attempt to deny it; for there is a certain pleasure to be found in exhibiting both my capabilities and, if I may be so bold, my considerable mental prowess! Though I can soundly declare that I do make every effort to remain humble, in this instance, even I will admit that this mind set can be perceived as arrogance.”
“Hmm.... I don't know.... I'm not so sure about that....” Teana considered. “It's pretty obvious that I don't have your level of confidence, but I think I can relate in some way... I know I mentioned that it's been a dream of mine to be a professional dancer, right? So far, I've only been able to showcase my skills in local festivals and celebrations, but even with that, there definitely is something about having an audience watching; marveling over what only you can do! It's a feeling that I get that starts off in the pit of my stomach, and then travels into my chest, when I know that I'm performing well; when I'm in perfect rhythm, when I'm landing every step and maneuver! And especially in those final moments when I've managed to captivate the crowd so much, that they can't help but applaud and cheer for me! It's really something.... It's like my heart is about to burst! I feel lighter! Happier! It's like...a rush of some sort.... A feeling of-”
“Exhilaration?” Yami concluded.
“Yeah... I think that just about sums it up... That's definitely a good word to describe it! Is that how it is for you too?!” Teana inquired, eagerly.
“It is indeed. A large part of it is exactly as you say! It's certainly a welcome indicator that I am capable of feeling such things; that I can feel as alive as I do then! And I say this, even in spite of the belief that I must now prepare for my descent into the afterlife; something that I am sadly reminded of, each and every day....” Yami sighed.
“However, aside from that, which I'm afraid relates to our prior discussion... I will admit that stubbornness, determination, and ultimately my thirst for victory are, at times, key factors as well; particularly when I am in the midst of besting a certain apprentice priest, who will remain nameless.... Then again, I may need to reconsider my stance in regards to arrogance.... It is also quite ironic, given that my uncontested winning streak tells a very different tale, but I do believe that this individual may be more boastful than even I am!” Yami smirked, in recollection.
“When two egos collide, huh?” Teana teased, as she shook her head.
“You have no idea....” Yami said, with a confident smile. “Returning to our former topic, I can not say for certain if I have ever considered it to such a degree... Perhaps there is a deeper layer to such pretenses, far past even the feeling of enjoyment or self-satisfaction. From what I gather, there is also the matter of losing oneself in either a role or exploit, to focus solely on the task; to the point where you are able to forget the circumstances that surround you, so completely.”
“Hmm... This might sound strange too but, I think you were able to describe something else that we have in common....” Teana said wistfully. “For me at least, it's nice to be able to forget what the others really think of me, when I'm so fixated on performing. I'm not even thinking about who I am, as a person. In my mind, in that brief period of time, there's nothing else but the act of dancing....”
“It appears as if we are discovering quite a bit about each other today; and how many of our feelings seem to overlap... It really is rather curious... In my case, I believe that the very root of it dates back to my younger days. If you can imagine, it began innocently, with the game of make believe.... I recall briefly mentioning this to you, during our last encounter.... And interestingly enough, the game would often coincide with magic lessons; ones that I would partake in with my two friends, Mana and...Mahado....”
Though Teana had noticed Yami's mention of the not so surprising concept of magic, what had taken precedence was his deliberate pause; as well as his now troubled expression... Uncertain of how to respond, Teana simply waited for him to elaborate.
“With them, at the time anyhow, I would indeed like to pretend that I was another individual, entirely. Whether it was something completely out of the ordinary, such as a heroic, undefeated warrior, or perhaps an explorer seeking new lands! Yes, even then I prided myself for how thoroughly I could become one with those roles, as Mahado and especially Mana would watch me with delight! It was certainly an entertaining pastime, but in truth, what I enjoyed most of all, was pretending that I was just like them; that I was not royalty at all. I can recall quite clearly, when those two would even humor this perception. I truly felt that nothing could separate us, that there was absolutely no difference between us; and I wanted it to remain as such... And yet, I suppose it was inevitable that it would come to an end... Slowly but surely, I learned that this mind set was just that; a part that I was playing. It could never be real, no matter how I wished it were otherwise. And each day I am reminded further, how much of a fantasy it truly was... Maybe from the very beginning...”
“Yami...” Teana whispered.
“I almost wish now, that they hadn't made me feel that way, which I believe directly resulted in my desire to be viewed as a human being, rather than a prince or god. Perhaps if they hadn't treated me as if I were a “normal” person, if they had never acknowledged that I was capable of feeling in the same way that they could, it would have made it much easier for me to accept my life for what it is; to accept the true role that I must play. It was foolish to believe in such things... I see that now. But understandably, with the practice of magic, in particular, the line between fantasy and reality could quite easily become blurred; making it much much simpler to perceive the impossible; to potentially accept things that one knows is quite the reverse in the real world! You can see anything! You can be anything! And as I developed those skills, I learned to create entire worlds of my own imagining! For this very reason, it is a skill in itself to learn to distinguish what is real and what isn't; perhaps to avoid inner conflict, much like the kind that I have had to contend with..."
“You can do magic...” Teana remarked, more so as a statement, rather than a question.
“Ah... Yes, that's right.... This is the first time that I've shared this with you...”
*It's the first time that he's told me... But not- He doesn't know that I saw-* Teana thought to herself.
“Does it surprise you that I have such capabilities? Or rather-”
“No. It doesn't surprise me, Yami.” Teana said simply. *He was about to ask, if it scares me... I'm sure of it...*
“I guess this is one of those fantastical beliefs about the pharaoh and the crown prince that actually does ring true, huh? That you have power that many people don't have. In all honesty, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. I can't even imagine such things myself.... That they even exist...”
“Well then, would you like me to show you?” Yami inquired.

“Well then, would you like me to show you?” Yami inquired.
