Description Sofie's a bit harder to design for, and I'm not really sure I'm happy with the last two here. She's meant to look SLIGHTLY silly because she doesn't dress herself, her parents do, and they like to make her look cute and doll-like. Thus her clothes look a little... antiquated.

Perhaps I'm pushing it a little too much, this story is meant to e set in modern day after all. But then again, some of the stuff I see on the Ralph Lauren site is pretty ridiculous looking sometimes, so...

The first one seems very "Sofie", but if it's a matter of "her parents dress her funny", than anything goes, and rock on

I really love the second outfits, especially, for more "active" moments. It's only the third that makes me a little sceptical.

hummies... why don't you use, not a Gothic Lolita style, but some of it's stuff o.o after all, some styles of it are kinda doll-like. If not i'd surerly try some English high fashion clothes, like the ones from Burberry

That's a good suggestion!

I think they all look rather lovely, but maybe a story set in modern day might have more up to date clothing, but still have that sort of childish edge to it; like baby doll dresses or bows in the hair. As others have said, you could update these by cutting them higher as well. But who cares, because all of these are stunning!

Well if you're going for a more Modern Antique why not go a more Steam Punk look? I've always thought of that style as a perfect set for anyone in the future that wants to be a little out dated.

I love the first outfit for sure (Very Alice in Wonderland) The Second I thought she was trying to go under cover as a boy(Until I saw the bows for the braids), the last one is nice but maybe shorten the dress hem a bit? I dunno.

Yeah, I definitely need to shorten the hems on the dresses.

I love steampunk too, but I think that will be a little TOO over the top. It does need to be set in regular, modern day Amsterdam, and Sofie's parents probably wouldn't go that overboard with dressing her- if she wasn't blind, i could see her liking Steampunk style, but as is is, she doesn't really care what she's wearing as long as it's functional. XD

I think it's really only the last one that's pushing it. other than that the other two could be updated with changes to the cuts.

On the contrary, I adore works that have an old-timey feel even though they're set in modern times. Those sorts of things make for wonderful escapism. That was actually one of the reasons I've been thinking Nightingale will be so kickass.

middle outfit looks like something i could see someone wearing nowadays, but yeah, the dresses do look a little too outdated

the one on the far right reminds me a little bit of a gunnesax dress. Maybe that's the way you want to go? They were pretty soft and romantic looking, but if you raised the hemline would give a doll-like quality without going down the gothic lolita rabbit hole.

She's a bit younger, right? I would change some of her skirts to a knee-length, which would be more age-appropriate and look more contemporary.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion. I tried to make them shorter earlier, and it just looked weird. I'm thinking of starting from scratch with these, I'm not really happy with any of them. D:

If you want to study fashion theory a little further, I'd recommend looking at 9 Heads (try to find it in a library if you can since it's somewhat expensive). Aside from just good instruction for drawing clothes, it also talks a lot about designs for different age groups, evolution of fashion, &c.

Yeah, I have to agree, the skirt should be at knee length at least for the 'doll' effect. Maybe petticoats if you want..

The designs look pretty classic though. And if her parents are dressing her, Sophie wouldn't have any bare midriffs or anything like that. But if you want to look through say Sears' site or JC Penney's site, you might find more ideas. I get the impression they must be yuppies though so Ralph Lauren works. Maybe look at Polo as well?

Either way, the clothing could be from today or the fifties or sixties. Timeless.

I totally agree with this. Definitely add a petticoat for the more girly outfits.

In addition to other suggestions, maybe look at some pictures of Dollfies? (Only for the more "doll-like" outfits.) If you want her to look like a doll, then use actual dolls for reference! ^_^
