Description On the Pennsylvania Railroad the K-4 Pacific was the queen of the rails. Designed and developed at the Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA, the K-4 was described as the perfect steam locomotive. The K-4 was the backbone of the Pennsy's passenger fleet hauling all the famous named trains like the Liberty Limited, the Pennsylvania Limited and the Broadway Limited. Working with industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the Pennsylvania Railroad's Engineering Department streamlined K-4 3768, coupled with the special streamline treatment was a special bronze paint job for her debut at the 1938 World's Fair. She was later repainted in the Pennsy's traditional Brunswick Green. My illustration shows this famous locomotive speeding below the High Line near Philadelphia, PA in the early 1940's.

Adobe Illustrator 8.0, Apple Macintosh G4 Power Mac and G3 iMac, OS 9.2.

Love it.  Though I just learned it was never Brunswick Green, it was always DGLE -> Dark Green Locomotive Enamel.

Really, I never knew that, I just always assumed it was Brunswick Green. Thanks for the info!

Technically, DGLE was the Pennsy's official term for it

I am so late to this party, but I have to comment anyway. The 3768 is one of the greatest streamlined steamers ever [along with the 6100 and possibly a couple of others] and this is the most magnificent rendering of it I've seen. At its best in the deep bronze and full jacketing of its first appearance. Thanks for this. It is so good that despite the dA watermark, I use it as the full-window background image on my Opera browser's speed dial, with all bookmarks removed so I can see the whole thing every time I start a new page. It's glorious.

Thanks Lance and thanks for watching too. I agree, very classic lines, Loewy was shear genius, his work for the Pennsy was unmatched in locomotive design. When you look at the the K4, the S1, the T1 and the GG1, nothing even comes close. I'll remove the watermark for a few days so you can download a clean version. Thanks again for the kind words.

Thank you, and thanks for the ! PRR locomotives are one of my great passions. I was born a few years too late to see them live under steam, so through my illustrations I hope to give some idea of what it must have been like when steam ruled the rails.

Thanks Andy! What modern technology? The wires? They are old school too. The electric lines are for the GG1 Electrics that were built in 1934. Here is a link to a cool web site that tells about the PRR GG1 Electrics [link] I'm planning an illustration of one. -YD

Yeah, it's pretty amazing. I wouldn't thought it either. Not only did they have them, but they were fast as hell too, the GG1 could do over 100 mph. I'm working on an illustration of one right now and they were pretty impressive machines. -YD
