The bell rings as I rush into class, choppy scarlet hair bouncing behind me. I take my seat, careful not to glance too much in her direction.
We all leave our seats to walk to the four corners of the class room for each topic brought up. The first corner if you had no idea what the topic was, the second for knowing a few facts, the third for knowing enough to write a decent paragraph, and the fourth for knowing enough to give a lecture to the class on the topic.

I can't help but notice that for most things she travels confidently to the fourth or third corners.

Always.

I shouldn't be surprised at all, really. She's a genius. Brilliant and witty. Cunning and smart. Amazing. Beautiful... gorgeous.

We all run back to our seats, invigorated by the unusual activity. Normally history class is just PowerPoints, notes, discussion, and random tangents usually involving New Orleans.

I run too fast,
try to sit down at my desk.
Overestimate the distance, trip over my backpack, over my own feet.

The desk tips over.

                                  BANG!

        Silence.

A tidal wave of "are you okay?"s wash over me, smothering, cacophony.
"Yeah I'm fine."
I straighten up my desk, knee slightly scuffed against the carpet. Some kind girls help me pick up my books. She is one of them. I cautiously lower myself back into the chair, heart racing. Adrenaline.
"Are you alright Jessica?"
I raise my chin quickly to look up. Who called my name? My vision narrows, I forget how to breathe. Her face. Her beautiful face, mere inches away from mine.
"Yeah, I'm okay."
Her olive green eyes lock with my own boring brown. It feels like she can see into my soul. I start to feel lightheaded, which is when I remember that breathing is a necessary human function. Her fringe falls into her bright eyes, grazing the tips of her dark eyelashes.
"Are you sure?"
A thousand sparks sent straight to my heart.
"Positive. Th-thanks for asking." Damn. A stutter?
"Okay." Her face lights up with a smile. That smile. I feel as though the whole world would stop, just to see her smile.
I smile too.
"Thank you."
And I thought I liked her before.
