Description I say, wot wot! This took bally well longer than it should have done! Silly lass used the wrong painting technique!
(shut up! I'm English I'm allowed to use the stupid accent!)

So anyway, here is Basil:
(btw America there is no Y is Basil. Its pronounced BAH-ZIL, not BAY-ZIL... urgh, watching Food Network in my house is a nightmare)
(shut up! I'm English I'm allowed to be bitchy about the use of language!)

I've always pictured Basil as this sort of veteran who spends most of his days in the woods, getting his old uniform tatty and having to replace a torn of sleeve with that of another garment.
(shut up! He's English he's allowed to be eccentric !)

...Anyway, here he is sneaking from the Redwall pantry, dabbing away the evidence like a boss! Just get those stains out your clothes before Hugo finds out!

Best portrait of Basil Stag Hare I've seen to date, very close to what I imagined him like as I read the novel.

You got it on the nose-  this  fits him to a 'T'  . Basil can be quite foppish and gallant when he wants to be, and you can't help but grin at his  antics... though you'd be wise to keep your pnatries under lock, key and chain.-  Bloody stomach on legs, that's what he is, eh, wot?

Basil Stag is one of my favorite characters in Redwall.  I absolutely love this artwork!!!

By the way, I don't pronounce his name as BAY-ZILL...it just seems silly that way.  But for anything else, I pronounce it BAY-ZILL.  I dunno, I'm weird that way xD Also American

I really like this portrait, all the small details, like the napkin and the scars are wonderful. Can only hope you'll do a series of heroes' portraits, after all the main villains are painted.

BasilBasilBasilBasilBasilBasilBasilBasilBasil!!

Blehg, I really need to start reviewing these masterpieces more often.

But usually I'm too busy staring at the wall or off into the sun, or so I imagine.
However, I've regained focus and shall begin commenting from henceforth, until I forget again!

So as usual, I'll rant on and on about the character and will make a bunch of strange remarks and puns, because that's what I do, and I wouldn't be me if I didn't do it, because that's just how I am.
Run for the hills.

Firstly, after reading the description, people seriously pronounce his name as "Bay-zil"?

Might be because I'm half-Irish but I've always pronounced it as "Bah-zil", and that was before I ever knew that Basil was actually a real name.
Oh well, whatevers, Tomayto-Tomahto I guess, some people just pronounce it differently, even if it is strange or wrong.

Basil was the first Hare I ever liked; yes that's right, I used to dislike the Hares of Redwall because they were gluttons that finished every sentence with "wot" or "wot wot" and were always doing something that annoyed me or something like that.

But then I reread Redwall, listened to the audio tapes and watched the show, and slowly, but eveeeeer so surely, he started to grow on me.

And now he's my favorite Hare, and I don't get annoyed with them...Except for when I do get annoyed with them, but it's for more reasonable reasons than my previous reasons.
Usually those being when they think of stupid ways to try and get more food, I mean seriously, it's NOT going to kill you to go five minutes without a five-dollar-footlong, I don't care WHAT you say.

Basil is also one of those characters that has lines that you can easily quote at people for some serious fun and enjoyment.

Example: someone curses at me; "-Gasp- Language?! Good sir, if your mother could hear you!"

Usually they'll get incredibly mad at me, especially if I keep up the act.

Being the first Hare in the series, Basil introduced us to the wacky, silly, yet comically efficient Hares of Redwall, and without him, we wouldn't have as many laughs as we have had.
Thank him, my friends, thank him...

Welp, that's enough of the character himself, let's get on to the artwork!

First of all, THAT FACE!!

Look at that smug expression!
He's eaten something he wasn't supposed to, and now he's destroying the evidence!
He knows he's gonna get away with it, and now he's mocking you because there's not a thing on this pathetic planet that can stop him!!

Except for Friar Hugo who's just around the corner.
Oh wait, no the good friar can't, 'cause he's dead. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!
(I am such a terrible person. ;_

I love how you made him look older as he is described, but also you gave him a few scars here and there, making it look like he's been in battle.
This coupled with that little napkin dab helps make him seem very old and eccentric, like The Doctor, except he's not a Time Lord, he's a Hare, which great, I mentioned Dr. Who alongside Basil Stag Hare, and now I'm going to have crazy dreams of them teaming up.
My mind is a very dangerous thing.

Regarding the outfit, while I do miss his original red coat, I do like this green one, and hey, there's a burgundy sleeve, so I guess that counts as half of the red coat.
I also like the scarf, or at least, I'm assuming it's a scarf, around his neck, as it makes me wonder if it's winter outside, or if it's just his own fashion statement.

Also, that napkin makes me wonder if he keeps one with him just so he can wipe away evidence.
Sly as a Fox, Mr. Hare, sly as a Fox.

I'm also interested in the pantry itself.
Look at all that stuff in there, it's such great attention to detail, and there's so many different things that I can believe are used in Redwall recipes!
I also think that Basil's smeared face must come from those hanging grapes, or at least some of it has.

Lastly, THE OCTOBER ALE!
So great that you added it just slightly off in the corner and put Basil's head over the lettering ever so slightly.
As well, it's hilarious how you added your signature on the October Ale as well.

"October Ale! Brewed by YasminFoster during 2014!" Wait, what?!

So that's all I've got to say about Basil Stag Hare, and hopefully after the villain portraits are done, there might be some hero portraits I can comment on.

A very good work of art, and keep up said good work.

WOOOOOOW... Its finally HEEEEEEEERE!!!!!

Ahhh, Basil. One of the greatest (if not *the* greatest) Redwall characters of all. He's the real reason why the first was so popular - well, him and Cluny, of course.

And actually, I already heard the name pronounced Bah-zil when I was a kid thanks to "The Great Mouse Detective", but sadly, I forgot all about that. So when I read "Redwall" I mentally pronounced it Bay-zil. Don't know why we Americans pronounce it that way, but thanks to the cartoon, I realized the right way how to pronounce Basil's name, so now I decided to say Bah-zil when its a name and bay-zil when its the seasoning.

(Heh-heh, and yeah, that's right, you are English, you do get to talk like that. Lucky. )

But anyway, back to the drawing. This is absolutely fantastic! He looks like a proper English gentlemen (beast?), with that upright posture and the way he's dabbing ever so politely at his lips with his kerchief. Classic hare manners.  I love all the detail you put into the background, especially the hare/stag medal hanging up there; poor ol' Baz better remember to take that with him, otherwise Friar Hugo will know he was there.

I didn't notice it at first until I read another comment, but yeah! Basil is a patchwork-furred hair, and his clothes match that! Awesome! But yeah, actually, that's how he was described in the books, wasn't he? A veteran who spends most of his days in the woods? Heh heh, yeah... But I would have said that being a hare allows him to be eccentric. Oh well.

Ooooh yeah, "like a boss", that's a *great* term to apply to Basil! Describes him VERY well.

Ah, Basil, the first charming "mad as a March Hare" chap. God bless the memory of Captain Kenny Dixon, the retired British Army officer who was the inspiration for the character, having a habit of saying "wot wot wot" frequently. Interesting concept of how he's not only a patchwork hare in fur design, but even his uniform is from pieces after various fights. Beats most portrayals of how it's a single red-coloured military uniform. And while the organization was not formally named until later, I like to think that Basil was also a former Long Patrol hare from Salamandastron.

Not that I know of, considering he lived a long time ago. I doubt any footage pertaining to him would exist. He was simply an acquaintance of Brian Jacques who became the inspiration for Basil "Stag" Hare and the Long Patrol in general. The Royal Air Force was a secondary inspiration, as well, based on the young, eager pilots during the War.
