I'm a male, and I tend to use a lot of female Pokemon.
Maybe it's because a male Pokemon with Attract or Cute Charm in competitions is fairly rare...
...or maybe it's because imagining what they would look like personified is much more mentally appealing.

Gender of the pokemon is not important in battle but it's important in reproduction and get a better pokemon with better EV/IV or/and attacks.

about 85% of the pokemon I own are female. I have only 2 female starters out of them all xD (typhlosion, and torterra)

Almost all of my Pokemon are girls:
Fleur the Meganium (starter), Pele the Magmortar (NOT named for the soccer player), Ammonoidea the Omastar (main rock type/Surf), Allura the Altaria (too cute), Puella the Gardevoir, and Phantasma the Gengar.
