Description
Vintage Tea Card
Circa mid-20th century

Collectible trading card issued by Brook Bond Tea of Cranford, Middlesex
Part of a series called 'Famous People' (# 11 of 50)

This card depicts Lewis Carroll and an illustration of Alice and the Queen of Hearts from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

 About Tea Cards -
In the United Kingdom a number of varieties of loose tea sold in packets from the 1940s to the 1980s contained tea cards. These were illustrated cards roughly the same size as cigarette cards and intended to be collected by children. Perhaps the best known were Typhoo tea and Brooke Bond (manufacturer of PG Tips), the latter of whom also provided albums for collectors to keep their cards in.

About the artist - Angus McBride
Born in London to Scots parents, fantasy illustrator Angus McBride was orphaned as a child and educated by the state from the age of twelve.
After relocating to Cape Town, South Africa as a young adult, he became a fairly well known and successful artist. However, he felt that he could not expand on his artistic plans in South Africa's small publishing industry. Consequently, in 1961, McBride moved back to the UK. He made his first works in educational magazines such as Finding Out and Look and Learn, World of Wonder and Bible Story. In 1975, he began to work with Osprey Publishing's Men-at-Arms series.

As England's economy suffered in the 1970s, McBride moved with his family back to Cape Town, and continued to work with British and American publishers. He continued to do realistic, historical illustrations for Osprey Publishing as well as other such work for other military-history publishers (Concord publications, etc.). In fantasy circles, McBride was well known for his illustrations for Iron Crown Enterprises' game Middle-earth Role Playing (MERP).

 About Lewis Carroll -
Lewis Carroll (whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) became a mathematical lecturer at Oxford when he was only 23. Carroll was brilliant and painfully shy, but very fond of children. It was to amuse the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, that he wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; he himself illustrated the original version. Through the Looking Glass followed seven years later.
These two fantasies were among the first books written from the child's point-of-view, with no moralizing.

Tusken Raiders are so misunderstood. They also like a good party, I'm sure of it.

Now back to business:

perhaps Ejderha-Arts thought tea was over, but this ride never ends!

The time has come,' the Walrus said,

           To talk of many things:

     Of shoes — and ships — and sealing-wax —

Of cabbages — and kings —

And why the sea is boiling hot —

      And whether pigs have wings.'

tooth decay? Well, this is one of the many benefits of drinking tea - tea helps to prevent tooth decay!
Thanks for the link. It's a nice find!
Me and our dear friend Ejderha-Arts , we already started kind of collection of tea songs...
I think I may create a list of such songs in the journal here... ?

This is truly amazing. It's a shame, but I didn't know such "tea cards", though I know about "chewing gum cards"...

Same concept! Like cigarette cards, only for kiddies. I do not collect tea cards but of course I end up with random ones sometimes from purchasing job lots from other ephemera collectors. I also may have some from teas purchased in the 70s - 80s kicking around.
