Holy Spirit Hospital

This 100-bed hospital and accompanying church were built in 1332 and 1339, respectively. It served as storage of imperial regalia from 1424 - 1796. It was the city's largest institution for disabled, elderly and infirm. Both the hospital and church were destroyed in the Second World War, only its ground-floor walls, the arches of the bridge over the Pegnitz River and parts of the outer walls remained following the Allied bombardment in 1945. Most of it was reconstructed by 1951-1953. The bay window and the pointed tower were also rebuilt. Today Holy Spirit is a retirement home.

While doing my research I found photos posted to travel sites that look exactly the same as this century-old postcard! Even the little trees on the island were the same size.
