A visit to Florida is not complete until one sees Nature's Beautiful Underwater Fairylands. OCALA is within a few minutes drive of Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs, two of Florida's outstanding beauty spots. . . . The Spanish Colonial Revival Style former Marion Hotel building, today known as the Sovereign Building, was one of Marion County's first 1st-class hotels.
The design of the seven-story concrete and steel hotel included stucco walls, with decorative Spanish elements. A central tower rises above the top floor of the main block flanked by two-story wings.
At the time of completion, an automobile garage for the use by guests, the Hotel Marion Garage, was also erected adjacent to the main structure. This garage is visible in old photos from the 20s, 30's and 40's.
The hotel opened with a gala celebration in early March of 1927. It ceased being a hotel sometime in the 1970s. In 1980, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Today the building is an office building with shops on the ground floor.
