HOTEL OGLETHORPE
Brunswick, GA

Standing on the highest point in the coastal city of Brunswick, this Victorian-era hotel was considered one of the largest and most beautiful in the south. This was in keeping with the great expectations surrounding Brunswick during the economic boom experienced here at the end of the 19th Century. After nearly 100 years of bad timing and war-torn setbacks since its founding in 1771, Brunswick finally came into its own as a port city in the decades following the Civil War.

For 70 years the Oglethorpe presided over downtown Brunswick, three stories high with 267 palatial feet of frontage commanding a view of the East River. Conical towers rose on the horizon of its genteel gothic architecture, which also featured a marble tiled rotunda and circular balcony overlooking a courtyard fountain amid lush gardens and landscaping.

The Oglethorpe operated from 1888 until 1958.
The grand hotel was torn down and replaced by a J.C. Penney store and a Holiday Inn, a sign of changing economic times.
The block of land commonly referred to as the “Oglethorpe block” is now a revolving source of hope for better days to come in Brunswick. City and county elected officials have pored over re-development options for it, such as a convention center or yet another hotel or both.

I read your history of the building with keen interest.  Bruswick is only an hour away from my home.  In fact my Elysian Visions I.D. is a photo taken on the beach in Bruswick.  The old hotel was torn down before my arrival here, and I am learning about it now for the first time.  Thanks for the lesson.
