The Shelving Rock Area is part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve within the Lake George Wild Forest. Located on the eastern shore of Lake George, the area consists of the state lands including Shelving Rock Mountain, a popular hiking trail. The little mountain is just over 1,200 feet in elevation, and in clement weather can be hiked in under an hour. Sweeping views of the Adirondacks back country can be enjoyed from its summit.
Lake George itself is 32 miles long and contains hundreds of small islands. Most of the islands are owned by the state and are used for camping.
