EMBANKMENT SHOWING NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON
The Metropolitan Police Service, informally known as Scotland Yard, is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement in London's Metropolitan Police District. It was founded in 1829.
Originally headquartered on Whitehall Place, it backed onto a street called Great Scotland Yard.
By the 1880s, the police force had outgrown its original site, and new headquarters were constructed on the Victoria Embankment overlooking the River Thames. In 1890, police headquarters moved to the new location, which was named New Scotland Yard.
