This little cub can't bear to leave his home state!

Official State Animal of West Virginia The state Division of Natural Resources conducted a poll to elect a state animal as a symbol for West Virginia in 1954 - 1955. The students, teachers, and sportsmen of West Virginia chose the black bear as the animal symbol for their state by a large margin. The Legislature officially adopted the black bear as the state animal of West Virginia on March 23, 1973.

Black Bear Facts

Black bears are very intelligent, shy, and secretive animals - actually seeing a bear in the wild is a very rare experience.

Black bears (Ursus americanus) are not always black - there are cinnamon, white, beige, and "blue" (slate gray) black bears.

Adult black bears vary considerably in size, from 130 - 500 pounds (occasionally as much as 700).

The black bear is omnivorous and will eat just about anything from nuts, berries, plants, roots, insects, larvae and small mammals, and if nothing else is available, roadkill and household trash.

The black bear ranges from the far north (Alaska and northern Canada) to northern Mexico.

They can run up to 30 mph and are good swimmers.

There's bears around my Mom's and my in-laws, but I've only ever caught a glimpse of one once! (If bear poop doesn't count... that's how I found out with the in-laws. We went hiking, stopped to pick chokecherries and it was obvious we weren't the first ones to chow down...) It was a young one sitting and eating flowers or berries or whatnot in a field. Fortunately we were driving by so there was no danger, if I hadn't been looking out the window as a passenger I would have missed him entirely! If you get into Northern Canada you'll encounter wild bears a lot more, but they're so unused to seeing people that 99% of the time they run like hell as soon as they notice you.
