(You know when you try to make one tiny edit in the text and accidentally delete the whole thing and accidentally save it too? That's what happened xD)A beautiful period(s) piece I commissioned from Arabatos (I'd link him, but his dA gallery has been inactive for years at this point)
These three girls live in very different times, and rather different worlds...but all in the exact same place. It is because of this that they find that they are somehow, by some mysterious power, able to communicate across the gulfs of time with each other.
This concept is totally not ripped out of "The Lake House" starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, nor its original Korean movie. Totally.
Amanda, Holly, and Jet belong to me, but are available to be borrowed if you'd like toΒ ask nicely.

In the edited description, Holly is referred to as an "only daughter". Yet, in her bio (yet-one-more-idiot.deviantart.β¦ ) it says she has 2 sisters. Which is correct?
Also, a random question, but is the Ares 1 colony where Jet was born a colony on Mars (due to the name Mars being the Roman version of Ares) or is it just some place on Earth in her time?

Ah, well spotted! xD Yeah, I have a habit of writing character bios slightly differently every time due to poor memory and a measure of laziness regarding checking up what I wrote the previous time. So the latest bio will often contradict earlier versions. xD (The edited description on this one is actually newer...I tried to add a bit to it before and dA helpfully deleted everything for me. xD)
So yes, Holly is an only child, unlike her friends in both past and future.
The Ares 1 colony is indeed a colony on Mars, that is precisely the logic I used for naming it.

Thanks for the clarification. And I see in the Holly bio it is now edited to list siblings as none, though there is still a bit in the bio's description about the older sister looking after Holly and her younger sister when their mum is working at the hospital.
The thing about Jet having dual citizenships from Mars and Earth is quite interesting. Indeed, I imagine if humans ever were to colonise other worlds than Earth it could have a big impact on how we even view concepts like citizenship.

Incidentally, even if the cat lady is a fictional character and not a sign of people actually having the means to have themselves made to look like that in the future, there is still another interesting hint that at least some level of advanced appearance alteration exists in Jet's time. Namely the fact that Jet's eyes are a pinkish-purple colour, as opposed to the past girls, who have more "natural" eye colours.
Is having one's eye colour altered in some manner maybe something as common in Jet's time as people dying their hair is in ours?

I'm going to say "yes" on this one. Today, we have the ability to cosmetically alter our appearance in all kinds of ways, including using coloured contact lenses to change the colour of our eyes - why not temporary eye-dyeing in the future. Perhaps they even just take a pill and the chemicals in it temporarily alter the colour of the iris, and once it wears off the iris colours reverts to its natural state.

Your description of the conditions in 2196 make it sound so cool. Β However, there is a counterpoint I would like to make. Β There was a short story (and by short, I mean over 12,000 words) written in 1909 that predicted the rise of the internet by almost 100 years, and it has some harsh things to say about this sort of technology. I find it amazing how technologies not even invented at the time, were extrapolated forwards into such super-structures as the worldwide web, which was just becoming the big thing it is today when I was a child (the 90s, in case you wonder
Truly, almost all visions into the future in works of fictions will tend towards one of the two extremes; either technology infinitely improves everyone's lives, or perhaps improves the lives of some at the expense of others; or it destroys us all (or at the least, is slowly running our species into the ground). Technology is never just a tool that we continue to use in far-future fiction as far I've read, it always either lifts humanity up out of the gutter and into the stars, or leads to our eventual self-annihilation. xD

Yeah, the wearer would simply be walking on air - no blisters, calluses, corns, verucas, bunions, sore feet....everybody would have perfect feet, instead of aching and squeezed into shoes that are typically made to be fashionable rather than the right shape for the foot. I know, even as a man I used to wear some shoes with weirdly pointed toecaps that squeezed my feet, and when I took them off, it would be agony to walk barefoot because they'd squashed my feet out of shape. xD

It's more surprising the fact that people will still be able to read in 200 years
( just think about the last time you used your hands to write, I haven't done that in over 6 months... imagine our lives in 30 years when computers and AI will actually talk to us or even directly to our brains )

Ah well, you might think that the world becomes completely illiterate in the future, but I doubt that that would actually happen. Complex instructionsΒ would still require reading and writing. People would still write for fun too, or write books, and I'm sure that schools would continue to teach reading and writing to some standard. I don't think that the future would be as grim as you think.

This is actually not just my point of view. It has been proposed by big futurologists such as Issac Asimov and Arthur C Clark.
The fact that there are less and less languages in the world ( more people speak Mandarin and English , where there used to be literally hundreds of languages ) is proof that this is starting to happen.
It's not a bad thing, it's just the way societies evolve along with new technology.
Think about it:
Before Gutenberg invented the press, most people could not read, simply because there was nothing to read.

Oh, in a household as wealthy as theirs, (owning probably the village and all of its square-mileage of farmland) the little Miss would certainly have her own chambermaid, and there'd definitely be a butler in the house too.
Holly, let's see...she's 10 in 1996, so that makes her 4 years my younger; or in other words, she's 27 now, and would have a career and young family of her own. And a computer markedly better than that boxy old PC she has in her bedroom here! 
Jet's hover sandals...yeah, I really just wanted to make a point that it's the future and they have cool tech we've not even thought out properly yet.
