Ahhh exams, that perennial bane of the lives of every single child... getting my exam pass made me think about how exams have changed. I used to sit exams in the same way as Holly is on the left, with a question paper and pen, calculator, and other stationery littering my desk. But since I graduated in 2003, my more recent professional exams (since 2015) have all been taken on computer (though not in the same way as Jet is experiencing on the right).

That was what prompted me to suggest this piece to amiwakawaiidesu , who made an excellent comparison of present and future exams. Amanda's not here - being homeschooled, she would never really sit any formal examinations.

So here they are, Holly Mackenzie sitting one of her Science GCSE exams (for those not in the UK, "General Certificate of Secondary Education") in 2002. (We take our first qualifications at age 16 in the UK, then another set at age 18), while Jet is taking a similar level of exam using a total-immersion VR set in the year 2202, also at age 16. Jet's exam seat also employs null-gravity tech so that she's hovering the whole time, to cut out distracting vibrations and movements from outside; the exam computer sends the questions into her VR set and reads her responses through the band around her head.

Being a future astronaut, it would come as no surprise to Jet that Holly's exam results would all be amazing (though Holly herself was rather less confident beforehand).
