History
Jeanne Comtois was born on March 15th 1770 to Ulysse and Léana Comtois. Due to her older brother, Rainier's frail nature and realizing that he would not be able to carry on their father's legacy, she was conceived. However due to complications, her mother died about a week later after her birth. Perhaps sensing Ulysse's anger towards having a daughter, Léana made him swear to raise her as an assassin on his honor, and he did so. Her father kept his word and trained her to be an assassin, though he rarely showed paternal love towards her. Her older brother, Rainier was a typical older brother, though initially they did not have a good relationship due to Jeanne's training. Eventually they have a relationship after she's taken out of her father's care, though it isn't a close relationship by any means. She continued to train to be an assassin, and that would be how she would eventually meet Arno after Pierre brought him to the assassins. Initially she didn't know what to make of him, though she did eventually see him as an ally, and would train with him.
She was a reluctant ally to Elise in that regard as well, though she always had her guard up with her, something that she would eventually let down around Arno, even with his allegiance to Elise. She helps Arno when she can, even after he is kicked out of the Brotherhood. During this she begins to realize she had, at some point, fallen in love with Arno, but keeps it to herself, as she can tell his feelings lie with Elise. After the events of Unity and Elise's death, she is tasked by the Council with trying to find his location during the Dead Kings DLC. She finds him and the two have a conversation, though Arno makes it clear he is still dead set on going to Egypt with or without her approval. She doesn't push, stating she would support whichever direction he would go with, much to his surprise as he always considered her to be on the side of the Council. She replies that she's loyal to the Creed but she's more loyal to her friends. When he returns to Paris, and rejoins the Brotherhood is when they fully reconnect, eventually marrying years later.
Trivia
Jeanne was named after Jeanne d'Arc by her mother. She wanted her daughter to have a name of a warrior, due to knowing she would be trained as an assassin by her husband. Despite her death, it was very clear she loved her daughter immensely. Jeanne has a very stubborn personality and is considered 'masculine' in terms of behavior, though she does show to feminine side. She is around 5'10'' making her slightly taller than Arno and taller than a lot of girls her age and in that era.
During the beginning of their relationship and for quite awhile after, Jeanne secretly fears that Arno is merely with her due to the fact she has red hair and it reminds him of Elise, despite being a different shade of red. This comes to a head when during an argument he accidentally (and unknowingly) calls her Elise. She leaves feelings hurt and all her previous feelings of being inadequate and her insecurities come to the front of her mind. She gets shitfaced drunk and Arno finds her sitting on one of the towers of Notre Dame, contemplating suicide. He manages to talk her down after a long conversation and get her home. It is one of the scariest moments for Arno, and one Jeanne does not like to remember.
She rarely talks about the training her father forced her to do as many of these teachings were heavily criticized by the council when discovered and after that she was trained by other assassins and her father was sent away and not allowed missions. While she never really goes into it, several are able to make a guess about what some of the training entailed, most notably Marquis de Sade, who states he can smell people like her out of a crowd. Needless to say Arno is not happy with her father when she eventually tells him.
Her relationship with her father is a complex one. While in her youth she desired nothing more than to make him proud, she was acutely aware that her father had desired a son to train. And while he may have loved her, her birth resulted in the death of his wife, something that he could never truly forgive her for and some think he resented her more for that than being female. As she grew older, and with events in her mid-teens her relationship with her father was extremely strained to the point of breaking. She was never truly ever able to forgive her father as she was with her older brother, even after his passing, and that's something that saddens her, much to her confusion. She is jealous of Elise in that regard as her relationship with her father is far better than hers could have ever been.
She has an incredibly fat cat that she took in as a stray. He enjoys regularly nearly smothering her while she's asleep. When Arno comes into her life and becomes a permanent fixture, he takes to the assassin as well and nearly smothers him as well when he spends the night.
