Description First of all: No, this is not a sequel to “A fanfic of a fanfic”... despite what the name suggests. This fanfic is vastly different, it explores Lazuli’s family before the tragic start of special chapter 5, and what led to such a dark outcome.
Secondly: Lazuli’s father’s name is Alfred, and her mother is a Vaporeon named Lapis (these are their canon names for anyone that didn’t know). Anyways, now the actual fiction starts:

-Where are you, you little punk?

Alfred looked around, carefully listening to any sound clue.

-Listen, I won’t stop searching for you until this piece of mud meets your face, you hear me?
He noticed a small brown ear slightly peeking out of a bush. He pretended he didn’t see it and turned to the side.

-It doesn’t matter how well you hide! Sooner or later, I will find you and-

His rather dramatic speech was interrupted by a mud shot to his face.

-Yay! I win again!

Lazuli went out of the bush jumping in joy, while her father shook the mud off his comically pissed expression. Alfred stared at Lazuli, with a sarcastic evil smile. Lazuli quickly became scared, they both knew what that stare means.

-Uh-oh... Kyaaa!

Lazuli tried to run away, but her father caught up to her in an instant.

-No, no no no, please, no, anything but this!

-Ah? What’s that? You’re not so tough when the TICKLE NATION ARRIVES, HUH?

Alfred started tickling little Lazuli all over, she couldn’t resist it.

-Hahahaha! Daddy, please, hahahaha, stop! Hahahah!

He stopped to give her a breath. Lazuli slowly stood up, she had tears in her eyes from so much laughter. She wiped them while trying to calm down.

-Seriously, girl, you’re on a rampage! At this rate you’re gonna have to replace me at work!

-Teeheehee...

Our arcanine was obviously kidding, the last thing he’d want to see is his little daughter in the dangerous places he often explored, but he liked seeing her motivated.

They heard the sweet voice of Lapis.

-Lazuli, Alf! Dinner’s ready!

Alfred took Lazuli and put her on his back.

-Let’s go get dinner, princess.

-Yay!

Another day...

Mount Avalanche proved to be a hard territory. The harsh cold, landslides, constant hail and ambushes behind every corner made it a deadly place, a single wrong step could be the last. But Alfred, along with his team, managed to pull through.

At the peak of the mountain lied Barbanegra the Garbodor, a powerful crook who had been causing a lot of trouble recently. It wasn’t the first time Alfred would meet with him, as they already had a few exchanges in the past, where the crook would always manage to flee.
Alfred stepped on the highest peak first. The crook was sitting there, almost as if he was waiting for his arrival.

-Ahh, Renacy, we meet again.

Alfred was never too fond of his own name. Once he started climbing up ranks in the rescuer HQ, he made a nickname. Workmates and criminals always knew of this powerful rescuer as Renacy (which later became Renacy the Shining Sun thanks to his signature strategy), while only his family called him by his real name.

-This is the end, Negra!

-Indeed.

As the wanted criminal said that last word, a landslide blocked the path to the peak. The rest of the rescue team was trapped in the level below and had to fight off some minions.

-You have foiled my plans for the last time, Shining Sun. I will personally destroy you here and now, and I will wipe the snow with your face!

-Bring it on!

A sight to behold: two powerful enemies fighting at their fullest, in the climax of a long and difficult journey. Negra meant the rescuer’s greatest challenge and toughest battle yet, for such a highly bewared criminal had about as much strength to dish out.

As the battle started, Renacy attacked with Extreme Speed, but the crook predicted his approach. Negra covered himself from the hit and then caught his paw, slammed him to the ground and sent him flying with Payback.

The hail was very annoying, it reduced the arcanine’s vision and mobility, so he got rid of it with a Sunny Day. Negra took that small opening to envelop him with Toxic. He was about to follow up with a Venonshock, but Renacy surprised him with a fast, sun-boosted Fire Blast, which reached the garbodor. When the crook opened his eyes, the arcanine went out of sight, and he got hit into the air by another Extreme Speed before he could react.

As soon as he got lifted from the ground, Negra knew the rescuer’s next move, he started forming a yellow orb between his hands. Renacy jumped towards him with a Fire Blast ready, but he was instantly repelled by a Focus Blast. As the crook landed, he quickly threw several Venomshock beams at the arcanine. With his speed, he managed to dodge them all, but had to retreat a few meters.

The damage from Toxic was starting to add up, it wasn’t long before Renacy would faint from it, and Negra was just winning time with his nonstop Venonshock. The rescuer decided it was the moment to do justice to his title of The Shining Sun. He jumped extremely high, almost reaching the Sunny Day. At the peak of his jump, he performed his signature Morning Sun. One could just barely see a radiant shape up there, emitting blinding light. And, as he finished healing himself, he was about to land on top of the confused Negra, shooting a full power Fire Blast at point-blank. This devastating attack melted the snow and left a huge star-shaped scorch in the stone under, with the great crook falling to his knees in the middle.

-Well played, Barbanegra, but the game is over.

-Hehehehehe...

The arcanine kept his guard high, who knows if the crook still had a trick up his sleeve.

-Do you think... this is it? I’m not going to fall...

The garbodor painfully stood up, coughing and panting.

-Remember me... I will be your worst nightmare.

As he said this, Barbanegra quickly threw a Blinker Seed at Alfred, distracting him. The rescuer
struggled to shake off the blink as his foe ran away with an escape orb in matter of seconds. After the status had faded, the legendary fire dog could only stare at the scorches left by his last attack, being struck and covered by hail again.

Alfred didn’t become frustrated because of this. Now he knew for sure he could overcome his nemesis, and he would surely catch him eventually. After the quest, he returned to a regular routine. However, Barbanegra decided to take a different approach...

A few weeks later, Alf and his family were spending the day in town.

-Daddy, they’ve opened a new post nearby! Let’s go see it, please!

-Alright, alright, we will. What’s that post about?

Lapis answered his question:
-It’s a new mini-game. You get to throw darts at some balloons, if you hit the targets, they give you prices like dolls, toys and such. Lazuli’s wanted to try it ever since she heard about it.

-Sounds like fun, what are we waiting for then?
And a few minutes of walking afterwards, they arrived. Lazuli and Leaf started playing. Alfred whispered to Lapis:

-You three stay here, I have to leave for a moment.

-Where are you going?

-Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.

And he left. Meanwhile, the two kids were having fun at the game.

-Alright, Leafy, what doll do you want?

-Umm... there! That one!

-Aww, you want a doll version of your father, how adorable. -Said Lapis while patting Leaf’s head.

-It’s that... Daddy isn’t around home very often, I miss him a lot...

-Well, not to worry, your big sis will get that doll for you!

Said and done. Or... said and tried, at least. Lazuli wasted almost an entire set of seven darts and she didn’t hit the target yet. She threw the second last dart, and missed again.

-Oh, come on, really? This thing has to be rigged!

-Sis... can I try once?

-Eesh, okay. You can have the last shot.

Leaf took the dart. She measured the wind, calculated the distance, aligned a proper angle, carefully got into position and finally threw the dart. For a second, Lazuli thought she would get it first try... but the shot failed miserably.

-Oops... Guess I’m not very good at this ^^’

-...Excuse me, shop assistant? We’ll... We’ll have another set of darts...

Now switching to their father...

Since they had arrived the town, Alfred noticed that a Sneasel was spying on them. Even when they went to the dart post, the Sneasel had followed them, and it was quick to hide whenever Alf turned his face towards it. It was very suspicious, so the father absented himself to go inspect while the kids were having fun with the darts.

Alfred was quick to catch that spy. He forced the icy pokemon to the ground with his paw, preventing it from escaping.

-Who are you and why are you spying on us?

-Hehehe... I’m here to give you a message.

-A message?

-You’re doomed, Renacy. Barbanegra will hunt all of you down!

-All of... what do you mean all of us?

The Sneasel looked at our arcanine with a scary evil smile.

-No... No you don’t...

Alfred understood. He backed off with a really frightened expression.

-Hehehehe... You had better watch their backs.

-D-don’t you dare—

The Sneasel went out of sight for a moment, only to appear behind him.

-But you can’t even watch over yourself, how pitiful.

Alfred turned around, ready to attack that sneaky bastard, but the Sneasel had already gotten away. With his flamethrower already half charged, this father stared at nothingness, still unable to process that sudden but deadly threat.

After a few seconds, he finally managed to shake off the shock. He ran back to his family as soon as possible, and was momentarily relieved to see them fine... But he couldn’t get cocky.
Lapis received him with her usual smile.

-Hey, you’re back. Was something wrong?

-No, it’s nothing...

Lazuli and Leaf went running for their dad. Specially Leaf was eager to show him the doll she now had.

-Daddy! Look, daddy! I got a little version of you!

-Hey, not fair! I won it for you, Leaf!

-Um... yeah, very... very cool, sweetie...

Alfred didn’t look very enthusiastic, poor Leaf was disappointed about his reaction. For the rest of the day, he was very stressed, constantly looking around with worrisome eyes. Lapis kept asking him what was wrong, but the answer was always the same: “nothing”. His family was mostly unaware of the real dangers of his job, and he didn’t want to scare them off with that threat, even more so the young kids.

Alfred took the next few days off from work. Lazuli and Leaf were happy that they would get to spend some extra time with their dad, but...

-Heeheehee...

Lazuli sneaked behind her dad, who was glancing the area from high up.

-... Surprise bomb!

That one was a classic, jumping to her father’s back while yelling “surprise insert weapon here”. Alfred usually expected it, but this time he was actually surprised. Instinctively, he threw Lazuli away from him a few meters, not realizing it was just his little daughter.

-Ouch!

-Oh, L-Lazuli! Are you okay?

-Yes...

-Next time don’t sneak up on me like that, please.

-But dad, I want to play with you!

-Sorry, Laz, I’m busy right now, maybe other day.

As each and every day passed...

-Leaf, go play inside.

She was just lying on a bed of leaves, enjoying the sunlight and breeze.

-Why? I’m very comfy here, I made this leaf bed myse--

-I said go play inside!

Alfred became more and more stressed...

-Daddy, can we go play around the forest?

-No, just stay here.

-But we haven’t gone out in these days yet, please...

-No, Lazuli.

-...What if you come with us too? We can go together!

-Stop bothering me, darn it!

For a small moment, Alfred lost control of himself. The innocent children were terrified of their dad as he showed them a scary face. He exposed his sharp teeth and small fiery particles came out of his mouth, as his eyes were wide open with shrunk pupils and knit brows.
Just half a second afterwards, he became very dizzy, not knowing exactly what happened.

...To the point of almost endangering his own family himself.

The warning from that Sneasel wasn’t a prank. In five days, he had repelled two different pokemon trying to attack his family, and the third pokemon arrived on the sixth day, this time almost succeeding. It was getting harder and harder to protect his family. They had more and more questions, and were more and more exposed.

After that last attempt, he couldn’t take it anymore. That night he told Lapis about everything that was happening.

-...Alf! Why didn’t you tell me sooner about all this?!

-Sorry, honey, I really didn’t want to bother you and the kids with this, I thought I could handle
it myself, but... It’s gotten out of hand. I’ve been the worst father on earth this last week...

-Don’t say that... we’ll get through this and go back to normal. Look, tomorrow we’ll go on a trip and find somewhere safer to stay, okay?

-It will be no use. Negra will eventually track and find us again.

-Then, what else could we do?

-I don’t know, honey... That crook only wants me dead, perhaps if I surrender to him he’ll leave you alone.

-What?! Don’t be ridiculous, Alf! We’re together in this! How about this: we will all move out tomorrow, find a safe place somewhere far away, and then you’ll deal with Negra.

-Do you trust... I’ll be able to take him down?

-Oh, when have I not trusted you?

One could see Alfred’s hesitation just by looking at his face, but the deep trust Lapis had for him always carried him forward, it was no different this time.

-...Thank you. But what about you and the kids?

-Don’t worry about us. I’m sure they will understand when I explain them, and I will make sure they stay safe and sane while you’re gone.

Lapis stroked Alf’s cheek while looking at him with confidence. He put his worry away, formed a subtle smile and answered her with a nod.

The next morning, they got to work quickly: planning out a route, stacking food and such. They found out they lacked food reserves and a few other useful items, so Alfred had to go to town to buy them.

-Lazuli, Leaf, are you coming with me?

The two sisters didn’t answer. They looked at him with a frightened hesitation. Alfred was shocked when he realized that, he made his own daughters fear him.

-Come on, your father doesn’t bite.

Lapis came to the rescue. The kids jumped on his back and grabbed onto his fluffy neck fur as
Alf offered to carry them.

The trip to town, however, didn’t turn out great for them. There was a lot of awkward silence, because the kids were too afraid to say anything to their recently aggressive father, and Alf was hurrying up to get everything and go back home as soon as possible.

Meanwhile...

A Sceptile talking to his Magnezone partner:

-Oops, I think I overdid it.

-You what?! Moron, we were supposed to take a hostage!

-Calm the heck down. This is at least something, I’m sure we will be able to snatch some cash out of him regardless.

-Sigh, you and your patience of a Voltord always ruin the job.

-But she was such a pain in the ass, that stupid voice was driving me crazy!

-Oh, and what doesn’t? You had better get some money out of this, or I swear it’s the last time I work with you.

-Pff, yeah, right.

-I swear!!

Back to our known arcanine...

It had been a bit tiring to carry the kids around, but that didn’t compare to the remorse he had as he saw that they just didn’t want to talk to him, they didn’t say a single word the entire way.

Alfred finally arrived home. He lifted the kids to the ground carefully, and they went almost running inside home. Alfred sighed, “I hope Lapis can get them to understand...” he wished. He started unpacking the goods they bought to get them ready for the journey. Not twenty seconds after the kids entered home, a strong scream was shouted.

-Mommy!

The arcanine’s pupils shrunk from fear the moment he heard that scream. “Please don’t, please don’t, please don’t!” Is all he could think while he rushed indoors, but that fear came true. As he entered the house and witnessed the dead corpse of his wife lying on the ground, a mix of emotions saturated his mind: anger, frustration, remorse, sadness... Only the voice of his crying daughter brought him back to earth.

-D-daddy, mommy isn’t breathing...

-What did you do...?

Truthfully, he wasn’t referring to the kids with that question. Was he cursing that wicked Negra? Or was he blaming Lapis for getting killed? Or was he blaming himself as he was incapable of protecting his own family? Not even he knew exactly what that question was, and he wouldn’t find the answers either.

-N-nothing, wh-when we got home, we found mommy like this...

Suddenly, Alfred realized that his daughters actually talked to him after a few days of silence. He remembered the looks of fright on them earlier that morning, and they were even worse now. In his mess of emotions, Alf only saw one exit.

-Get out...

-Daddy...?

...To send his children away from him. For as long as they stayed, Negra would try to hunt them down... If Alfred didn’t kill them first in an anger attack, his condition became very bad. He really could not take care and protect them anymore, they’d be safer running in the wild than being close to him. So, Alf made his final choice.

-GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!

-Ah!

-Sis!

He shouted at Lazuli as he sent her a few meters away, trying to control his strength. Leaf came to aid her, and they both turned to their dad as if they were looking at a monster.

-D-daddy...?

-IF I EVER SEE YOU TWO AGAIN, I’LL BURN YOU TO ASHES!! SO GET OUT!!

As he said this, the two sisters fled filled with tears. While hearing the screams and cries of his daughters, Alfred looked at the corpse of his passed away wife, with a face resembling nothing but deep sorrow and resignation.

-I wasn’t up to the task... I’m so sorry.

--EXTRA—

Somewhere, sometime...

Wind blew strong that evening, occasionally tearing off branches from the endless dried out trees and nonstop spreading the poisonous gas coming from various toxic lakes, as such resulting in a curious radioactive green sky.
Alfred walked out of a poison cloud, upright and determined.

-Oh, so you’ve made it this far... again.

The great crook Barbanegra stepped out of his throne-like poison lake. The cloud behind Alfred cleared, revealing a trail of dozens of fainted pokemon around his footprints.

-I heard the news about your wife, I give my condolence.

Negra could barely resist laughing saying that sentence, while the arcanine only stared at him in silence, serious and focused.

-Why the long face, Renacy? Or should I say... Alfred?

He was visually angered at how Negra referred to his true name.

-Oh, sorry, did I hit a nerve? Pfhaha, how rude of me.

Alfred had his head facing downwards avoiding eyesight, and barely muttered.

-How dare you...

-Oh?

-HOW DARE YOU SPELL THE NAME SHE USED TO CALL ME?!

The angered arcanine pounced directly on Barbanegra, with a Fire Blast about to shoot at point-blank. His expression resembled nothing but wrath: he exposed his sharp teeth and small fiery particles came out of his mouth, as his eyes were wide open with shrunk pupils and knit brows, and this time, his left eye was brightly shining in red.

This was really good!

You had me at the start, I thought this was going to be an abusive and angsty relationship, but I also believe that he was once a loving father, glad you didn't take the obvious approach there.

I like how you did the progressive side effects of the threat he was given, the paranoia of the safety of his family is shown on how cold and distant he is to them, and that being his downfall hurting both himself and his family. yet it also shows how far he'll go to protect his family.

If you are going to continue this series, I'd like to see how you think Gai evolved. You (mostly) dislike Sylveon, so after her special chapter, I'd like to see your take on it if Gai or Sylveon doesn't mention it in the special chapter.

Also, Leafeon has trash aim.

Hehehe, I knew everyone assumed Alfred to be evil, that's the whole point I tried to bust with this fanfic.

But I had the idea for this fanfic as early as special chapter 5-3, and that's because it reminded me of a character I made long ago, whose case was very similar to Alfred here. And yet, this was hard AF to make.

Now, something about Gai? With what we have so far, I don't have a clue of what I could do with him. Sorry ^^'

Also what do you imagine Alfred is doing during the time of the current comics. I imagine he'd either be trading to better control the virus or be looking for Leaf and Lazuli

In the canon comics I have no idea, there's been nothing shown.
But here? He'd definitely be looking form them.

I wonder what would happen if he showed up at the house one day. I imagine one thing that would happen would be Lazuil attempting to beat him up before the rest of the group restrain her long enough for Alfred to explain why he abounded them.

At first he was going to go alone, but then took the kids to try to make peace with them and failed, and he wanted to get the shopping done quickly to move out asap (he carried the kids on his back to go faster) because he was under a lot of pressure and... it was just a slip-up on both his and Lapis' part.

I admit I could've put a bit more detail into that part.
