I'll agree with you that you're getting better. You're lucky to have a wonderful little model to work with too. Will all, or most, your portrait photography be using natural light?

Probably most will be outdoors, because that is where I am 90 percent of the time

If you think you'll be doing a lot of portraits on sunny days then it would be ggod to purchase a diffuser like this: [link]
The diffuser is inside the covers. You place it between your model and the sun, casting a soft light shadow on her, and use your flash. The covers that you see are reflectors. You bounce the sunlight on the side of her that is in dark shadow. The only problem is that you need an assistant unless you buy the stand to hold it.
