I haven't seen the movie either, but I hear it's really good.
The colours and composition of this are all excellent; I particularly like the translucency and shine of the red gems! And how tiny and fishlike Ponyo looks in her mother's hand is adorable~
Her mother's hand seems to be at the wrong angle, though. Her elbow would have to be very far forward in front of her for the heel of her hand to be pointing back toward her body like that. Try using your own body as reference :3

I just watched it two days ago. I was really surprised to see that there was a scene almost exactly like this one actually IN the movie :3
Actually, for reference I had my roommate pose for me when I drew the hand XD I wish there was more width to this picture so I could show her arm, because it does work, you hold your arm close to your chest and rotate your hand (parallel to the floor/on a horizontal axis) towards you. Her arm probably needs re-shading to show a better angle. *shrug* Because the way it is, it does look like it's angled out from her body.

hmm...the motion is possible, but it just seems like such an awkward thing to do; not very natural at all. maybe it would be better if it were wider x.x
