Overview:

As a fairly recent addition to Hylia’s ranks, Yves Itoi is the newly awakened Acolyte of Many Faces. Though belief in Hylia remained in her family even in Vhintl, a hold over from the time her grandmother was an Inariko resident, her practice of Hylia worship and ancestral veneration only recently continued and she attributes this to being the reason she was chosen. However, despite her outward portrayal of confidence, Yves doesn’t know just why she, of all people, was imbued with this role or these abilities and sees it as a punishment moreso than a blessing.

A Vhintl native, Yves found her first calling as a mask maker since the death of her grandmother and guardian in her teens. An artist true to her craft, she can be found on most days seeking out berries to use in her mask dyes, preparing fish leather for molding into a piece of art, and sewing away in the village’s House of Masks. Her love for her job is only eclipsed by her love of companionship and the Sheikah can often be seen at Katusha’s Cafe Bar or festivals seeking to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. Though her outspoken nature can be a lot to handle, and abrasive to some, Yves is a kind person that just wants to keep her loved ones and village safe. With her newly gained senses, Yves hopes to understand the blight more and help the oracles and sages prevent it from claiming any more lives.

Personality:
Yves is an outwardly bubbly personality and is easy to get along with. While she can be a bit much at times, between her flirtatiousness and trickster nature, she’s incredibly caring for those in her community and considers people from other villages her community as well. However, due to some past situations, this care does not equate to trust and getting to truly know Yves and not just the persona she puts on requires a great amount of time, motivation, and care. Her lack of trust is most prominent when faced with non-Vhintlian Sheikahs, as she’s never felt close to them and almost feels exiled. When she’s at her most comfortable around people, she’s quieter than she would be socially, though she’ll still crack a joke at any chance she gets.

History: Yves has spent her whole life in Vhintl, first with her parents, and then with her grandmother. Her childhood was fairly cozy, with her wishing she was a fairy and befriending as many kokiri as possible. One of her childhood friends and her used to pretend that she WAS their fairy, meanwhile the kokiri’s actual fairy would watch them with glee.

Around the time she was in her tween years, her parents set off - they claimed to be heading in the direction of Inariko but the lack of a reason why has led to plenty of gossip about this. Some believe they were stealing books from Inariko’s Great Library while others believed they were researchers who went to the Research Lab to report their findings about Vhintl and its inhabitants, but the theory that haunts Yves the most is that her young parents may not have been ready for a child and ran off. If asked about this, she will get fairly cold and detached, the fear of having truly been abandoned setting in.

Her grandmother, though, had already lived in Vhintl and built up a great relationship with Yves, and she promptly moved in with her. She’d tell Yves stories of Inariko and the rest of the world, with Yves’ favorites being about the great fairies of the world whose fountains remained untouched amidst ponds of blight. It was here that Yves made her first mask, with her grandma’s help, and started a new passion.

If ever asked about her grandmother, she’ll remark on how beautiful the woman was, and how patient. How even when her movement was limited or she wept for her son and daughter-in-law out of worry or her her veins spidered across her loosening skin, she showed nothing but kindness, love, and acceptance of Yves.

What Yves wouldn’t mention is the sinking feeling of loss. She wouldn’t mention how she still fears rain after the lightning that struck the particular tree her and her grandmother were on during the accident, or she still visits it when it’s sunny. She wouldn’t mention her constant flashbacks to her grandmother’s joking “lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice” as she led her up to that branch, pointing to one particular patch of veins that Yves always thought looked like a lightning bolt. And finally, she wouldn’t mention how the lichtenburg figure that stayed with her after the accident reminded her of that vein, of that moment, and of that person.

Yves was struck with survivor’s guilt for a while after this, also being a young teen whose emotions were unregulated enough before her grandmother’s death, and she withdrew from the community, insisting she could take care of herself. The leg that was struck left her with a limp and occasional seizures, while her young age and lack of knowledge made fending for herself difficult. Through the help of caring souls around Vhintl, she was able to adapt to her new life, though she insisted upon living alone in the house her grandmother left her.

After sorting out her living situation and grandmother’s funeral, having opted to have her cremated to reflect the traditions of the exiled Sheikah clans her grandmother had spoken about, Yves ran into a whole new slew of problems. She wanted to provide for the village, especially after the support she got after her parents’ disappearance and grandmother’s death, but many professions were off the table due to her injury. The fear of the future and worry about “pulling her own weight” almost launched her into another depressive state until she recovered the mask she had made with her grandmother all those years ago.

She quickly set off, trying to improve her craft as quickly as possible. The Inariko Library was a major inspiration of herself and she found herself wanting the House of Masks to reflect as a cultural cornerstone of Vhintl in the way the library was for Inariko. By studying Sheikah markings and the many koroks around the village, she was able to get a muse and the determination to continue on with her craft.

With capturing culture as her inspiration, Yves set up shop once she reached adulthood, with masks for a wide variety of uses. Some of them seemed to scare monsters away, which came in handy for her since she isn’t the fastest runner, while others sedated and lured the monsters toward the wearer. Her favorite masks, however, were the decorative ones that looked like her friends, or one that even looks like it’s soaked in blight. (She has repeatedly shown anyone who asks that it is, in fact, a special blend of chu chu jelly, wine, and dirt. It looks realistic but she doesn’t think the blight is sentient enough to be affected by the mask the way that monsters are, and thus doesn’t sell any copies.)

The mask maker can now often be found in the House of Masks, working on a new one or gathering materials for new masks. Because mask making has become a job instead of a hobby, Yves’ new hobby has become repurposing her berry-based dyes into wines - a great hobby for someone who loves to host dinners at her house. She is, however, still a practical joker and has been known to serve wine and tell people later “you know my *feet* have been in that, right?” This joke never gets great reception though, especially considering that most times Yves can be seen out and about, she’s barefoot.
