Description I've just started Don Bluth's year-long online class on traditional animation.  The first six weeks cover draftsmanship.

The first assignment (top left) was to draw this dog character from Preston Blair's terrific book, Cartoon Animation, and copy it to the letter.  (No tracing allowed!)

The second assignment (top right) was to draw the exact same dog, but mirrored.

The third and final assignment (bottom) was to draw the dog's head in five different positions (front, 3/4 front, profile, 3/4 back, back).  I drew the five poses on good ol' 12-field Ingram Bond first, and after scanning them, I printed them, cut them out, and taped them to the paper to create a model sheet.

It's only been one week, and already I've learned a great deal!  Mr. Bluth liked my drawings, and said I did really well for my first assignment.  His only real critiques for me were to pay greater attention to the negative spaces in Blair's original drawing (between the chin and the ear, specifically), and to make more use of the space on the paper,  much in the same way an actor makes use of the stage.  (For context, 12-field animation paper is still pretty big compared to your average printer paper!)

One thing he repeatedly stressed during his live critiques (not to me, specifically, but to all of us) was to make the guidelines on the model sheets clearer, which I will make a point of doing going forward.

If you're interested, I have all three assignments uploaded separately in my Scraps: www.deviantart.com/youhaveasho…
