Well, there are wild betta types (not betta splendens) where they can be kept together. But they don't have the same sort of long finnage, so it's different. Your painting of them is very pretty even though in reality the territorialness would be off the scale in a real scenario like this!

Haha me too. I'd have a 55 gallon full of them.
Honestly they're ridiculously adorable in giant tank environments with tons of space to explore. Before I got my oscar, I had a single betta in his 60 gallon tank by himself, and it was actually really neat seeing how he behaved in there vs in a little 5 gallon.
And female betta sororities seem neat.

Oh wow how did he feel in a 60 gallon tank vs. a 5 gallon?
I had female betta sororities i had to seperate them all they
did was chase each other and nip each others fins it got me
so upset i put lots of plants and hiding places it didn't work.

Also, sorry your sorority was a nipfest! I've always been afraid to try one because I know that even the females can be aggressive and territorial, and it largely comes down to the temperament of the fish you happen to get.
Likewise, I've always been too scared to have more than one gourami in a tank, even big tanks. Other people insist that trios work but clearly they don't work all the time.

I've only done females either in small, separate tanks, similar to how I house the males, or in community tanks with livebearers. Sometimes the latter works out great and sometimes the female tries to attack the adult livebearers, and I separate them as necessary. So, yeah, I hear you, they can be pretty darn aggressive. I think some people just get lucky.
It stinks that your betta sorority didn't work out, but it sounds like you did everything you could.

He seemed really happy, and like he spent a lot of time exploring. It was a little funny because he could get totally lost from view in there, but he'd also still rush to whatever side I was on when I started paying attention. He seemed zippier than in the 5 gallon, I guess... which isn't to say that I don't think a 5g is enough room, but it usually seems like they maybe don't get to do a lot of lunge-swimming. Which, some of them have such big fins that that's probably just as well.
And maybe I'm anthropomorphizing but it definitely looked like he was exploring and finding all sorts of neat areas in the tank, to a degree that isn't possible in a 5g. I mean, it's still not quite like being in a pond, but it was still a lot of space for him, and it was neat. If I ever get another huge tank for freshwater, I might let a betta live alone in it for a several months while the vegetation grows out.

Yeah, I know! And Cambodia, too, I think. I've actually attended aquarium club meetings where people showed pictures from their trips where they went and tried collecting wild bettas (usually because they are interested in breeding wild strains & species not commonly found in American home aquariums).

I tried a female sorority tank plenty of plants hiding places in a 20 gallon tank with 5 females they were chasing each other biting each other taking pieces of fins off I had to sperate them it stinks. I wish i could do what you are doing with no problems do they chase or bite each other?
