Description So this is one of the reasons that I made these refs !  Wanted to do a spooky kinda experimental piece with leviathan Orion and had a lot of fun with it.

Some story details!  (Trigger warnings for death/violence)

But this is basically how these AU versions met. Orion is known as 'The Wishmaker' in The Cove ; he's an ancient, powerful force that lives deep in the darkest depths of the oceans, and is in-tune with all the dimensional connections therein; he's a part of the Cove's 'universe', and is a part of how it functions. (One of the many odd cosmic powers that dwells there, and one of the oldest and strongest of them all.) Even Origin  and Nyx (the forces of Life and Death in the Cove) show a healthy bit of respect, and view him as an equal. (He's technically older than they are, as he's much older than their current physical forms; but he also exists as a sort of 'law' of the universe, just like they do. He's not as specific as they are- they are the clear, obvious forces of 'life' and 'death', whereas he's an amalgamation, a puzzle piece the universe created to keep itself functioning, and not just a singular force with a singular purpose.)

But, unlike Origin and Nyx, Orion spends most of his time deep underwater, in the abyssal depths, and rarely sees anyone; and with his vast cosmic power, he became something of a legend and myth; a creature that could use its incredible power to grant the wishes of those who were brave enough to venture to those darkest depths... and who would trade something important to him in exchange.

Whether Orion actually grants these wishes depends on the day and/or his mood at the time, but he began being a little more keen to grant them within the past few millennia or so. He seemed to have a set goal in mind...

Enter Lux! Who left the Cove when he was younger to make his way in the universe, and returned to it somewhat... broken, and exhausted. He had fallen in love in his travels, again and again, and almost every time he had become obsessive, to the point of being dangerous. He was tired of ruining his life and the lives of those around him, but couldn't control his own jealousy and obsessiveness... and so he returned to the Cove to ask for help from that ancient myth and legend.

He asked Orion to keep him from harming others; and when Orion asked- as he traditionally did- what he would do to obtain that wish, Lux immediately replied, "Anything."

Orion had heard that before, however; and he immediately asked Lux if he was willing to die for that wish; or, since his wish was to live a peaceful life, then if he was he willing to live for that wish. Live forever, perhaps, without any chance of dying; even if it was possible that such a fate would lead him only to misery. Even if, perhaps, he would be unable to die, even past what should have killed him, what would have killed him under any other circumstances. Even if he would feel all the pain of death without dying. Was he willing to become immortal, for the sake of that wish, even if immortality had such a steep and terrible cost?

Orion had asked this question before. So many, many times. And it surprised him, just a little, when Lux said, "If that's what it takes."

But it still wasn't the first time he'd heard that, and Orion told him to go; to wait for at least one week before making that decision. If Lux could return in a week and still say that he would do such a thing, then Orion would grant his wish in exchange; and if he couldn't... then they would discuss different forms of payment. Something else to give in exchange. (Orion even stated that he could possibly grant Lux's wish for a very different form of payment, that he could do so in exchange for something far less awful.)

But a week passed, and Lux came back, and basically said, "You gonna grant my wish yet, or what?"

There was a reason Orion always asked this. There was a reason he wanted to know if someone was willing to become immortal, in exchange for their wish. Because he was desperately, endlessly lonely. Because everyone he knew and loved eventually died around him; even the grand cosmic creatures of the Cove would lose their physical forms one day, to possibly return as other physical beings or to stay in their cosmic forms for good. Orion was lonely, and he wanted nothing more than someone to always be there with him; and so, at one point, he had peered into the vastness of time. He had looked into the future, and he had found... a possibility.

A possibility that someone- someone who answered that question with a yes, even after having time to think on it, even knowing full well what they were agreeing to- would be able to stay with him. A possibility that this person would mean more to him than anything, that this person could be someone he would want to be with and love forever. It wasn't a guarantee- even when looking into time itself, there's never a guarantee that the path you see will be the one that happens- but this was the best path to find that person.

And the first person to say 'yes' to that question... was Lux.

Lux knew he could've had his wish granted some other way; but he knew Orion must not be asking that for no reason. Orion wanted someone to agree to that; and since Lux was very used to just living his life the way he wanted to- and, in fact, part of his wish was that he be able to still live his life the way he wanted, just without hurting anyone- he didn't mind giving Orion what he wanted in turn. He viewed it as a 'fair trade'; if Lux could get the wish he wanted, then Orion could have the wish he wanted, too.

The two made that deal (As a symbol of it, one of Lux's eyes lost its colors, while Orion's once-empty sockets gained an eye light), and Orion now spends his time almost exclusively with Lux. (Most often in a smaller- and usually humanoid- form, since that's usually easier.) They live together in the Cove (splitting their time between Orion's abyssal home and Lux's one on land) and Orion-thanks to his incredible cosmic power- can keep Lux out of trouble no matter what he decides to do, and will let Lux run mostly rampant unless he has to keep him away from his latest obsession. Orion is baffled by Lux and his strange behavior, but also strangely fascinated by him; he always wants to know more about Lux, and about that potential future they might have together.

Lux is not yet fully immortal, but he is slowly beginning to become that; Orion is working very hard to be certain that he will not actually become unable to die no matter what, that his immortality will not come at such a steep price, so they can live relatively happy and peaceful lives.
