adfada i'm an idiot, i wrote my answer as a new comment, not a reply
Anyways.
How did I learn? Ooo, thats a tough question, but it's basically what you first said. Draw, draw and draw some more to get what you can see down on paper. Of course, I'm highly influenced by particular character art styles that I like, so I try to apply that similar style to the base of my drawing that I want to draw, making alterations until it looks right. But basically references are your friend for humans. If something doesn't look right, or looks a little off, you look at a real life reference that's close or exaclty the pose/angle you're trying to draw and compare where things line up, thats one important thing that helps an awful lot and it's usually doing that that helps fix things. I also usually look at art references to help with things like eye styles, expressions to see how they've drawn it which helps if you're aiming for a particular look you've seen. Because I drew different styles that I liked, it kinda formed into the way I draw humans now. (seriously, you should see how my humans looked a few years back... they were bad)
