Description 1/13/10 Artist's Comments Editing
It's surprising how this is one of my popular deviations, so I would like to throw out a message just for the enjoyment of it. I feel the need to explain and to defend for the sake of writing prettily on the internet and having one person - most likely myself - view it. (Keep in mind guys, I do not create deviations to raise my views/popularity on deviantART. I haven't taken a single college course in the visual arts field nor have I taken any high-school courses - just so you know. I'm not going to raise my popularity anytime soon nor do I intend to).

Now there were only a few stamps before mine that proclaimed their lack of use of bases, and I actually haven't seen them before, which is why I've created this one. Now I search for stamps about bases, and they're plenty of them made in the summer that have reached better popularity than mine since - well - they look better or the artist is just popular, unlike myself. I absolutely have nothing wrong with being unseen, nothing at all.

However, what annoys me is the statements most of them create about bases. Alright, so. You don't use bases - that's given, but you are against the people that make them? Use them? You all are ridiculously narrow-minded if that is the case.

Base creators are kind people who enjoy making bases for other people's use. It's true that there will be those who do it specifically for views and popularity (but what is wrong with that? It is their own art), but there are also those who feel the genuine need to give. They did nothing but give resources. They create stocks with their own bare hands and computerized utensils, people.

The majority of the base users even kindly credit their source, and I see nothing wrong with that. They do not claim that their creation is fully their own, they did have some guidance. Bases are simply for poses because there are people who still haven't figured out to draw their own, but there's nothing wrong with that. Most base users use bases for the enjoyment of it or because it's simply easy for them - not for the sake of art.

Perhaps it's annoying that every now and then, a base user will "show-off" their created character, and that's fine to call that person off and rip his ego to shreds. Base users I know are not like that however - they are reserved, and they have reasons to use a base. Perhaps they really can't draw, and they just needed help creating an appearance of a character they role-play. Perhaps they just like drawing eyes and hair? You are simply exaggerating in your heads their actual reason. There is no reason to hate bases, and even worse, to create a stamp out of your irrational hatred.

Now I do not use bases - I take the time and effort to create my own lineart. That is exactly what the stamp says. I am not against the base-users at all, I'm simply saying that I can make my own - that I've grown not to use guidance (I've never actually used a base before). However ridiculously ugly my drawings are, I make my own. This stamp was simply for your self-esteem in relation to drawing.

So, what I've said on March still stands:

"Rejoice for the people who do not use bases."

I really dislike the use of bases in one's art. Not only is it a huge sign of laziness but it also hinders creativity and skills.

I don't actually use bases and I don't actually know how. I draw my line arts freehand and I work hard since I was a little girl when my big bro started teaching me how to draw anime and it's basic anatomy..

Is it ok if I use this??

ditto. the bases I formerly used, I tried to get everything as close to the original as possible. I may or may not have failed.

(Now instead of using bases, I make bases! I only have two, though, and they're MLP bases) Β

I use paint too (mostly for pixels). I more meant along the lines of making it look like a picture from a child's coloring book (which can also happen in photoshop), and takes them less than ten minutes to complete. I get that a fancy drawing program and no practice doesn't make you any more of an artist, just like having a fancy camera and not taking it off manual, doesn't make you any more professional. Β Β

I've never used a base in my life, and I do not think that it is art, because more than half of it is by another person. Also, you don't improve on anything. Not hating on anyone that does use bases, though. It is your choice, and I don't want to force people to not use them- just my opinion.~

And there's also the really annoying comments with the BEGGING base makers who spam you for it.

For us when we use bases, we never use the base itself. We just use it like as a model or reference and when we post the picture, we share it with the base user to give them credit. Even though we didn't use the base itself, we still used the idea the base had.

I'm a base user AND I draw my own art. Sometimes I think people need to give some base users a break here, I mean just because a person uses bases doesn't mean they can't draw. I sometimes use them for refrences as well it's really helped me understand how to shade and create different hair styles/clothing and what not ^^ Probably sounds strange I know but it's just how I feel on bases. If you don't use bases hey good for you ^^ I just don't like the base haters that scream/yell at those that do use bases -__-

The only problem that I have with bases, is that most people seem to claim that its THEIR art. As long as you credit the base, than that's okay.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaoticDarkAngel In reply to epicjello567 [2013-07-22 12:12:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I agree. I've seen people not credit bases and that's not right, before I use a base I make sure to give proper credit and remind people I did not make the base.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

epicjello567 In reply to ChaoticDarkAngel [2013-07-22 12:17:16 +0000 UTC]

That's really good. I don't trace over bases, but I use them for reference sometimes.

Another thing I hate is when people call their SONIC or Zelda character an "Original Character." Did you MAKE Zelda? Then your Zelda character is not "original." It just bothers me. :I

ChaoticDarkAngel In reply to epicjello567 [2013-07-22 12:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Ohhh you mean when people make a recolor of Zelda or Sonic and claim them as their OC? Yeah I can see where that would be bothering. I'm not quite sure what you mean here sorry

I have mixed feelings on bases. Traced bases I feel take away from the creativity, excuses base users use... are just sad... But at the same time I feel like a hypocrit because I like using bases. They are fun, they start getting my creative juices going and they inspire me when I'm stuck in writing, comics, or drawing a simple picture in general. I don't like how people take them, throw crappy squiggles on them and then say "I've learned so much!" I mean, just... no.
When I first started using bases I loved it and thought it was a lot of fun, I put time and effort into it and as I used bases I started learning how to design clothes onto characters, coloring and shading also started looking a whole lot better on my work as well.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't mind if people use bases, if they put effort into the drawing. But I don't like them stealing art and making them into bases, I don't like them using them as an excuse. I don't think they should be used to be a reference either. I think they are just... well fun. ^.^ Its like a paper doll for me.
