Description ZOMG! It's the new screenshots from Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star!

...Okay not really. I'm back, baby, and I bring the gift of brand new mock screen shots. I made this for the contest. The scene is a huge spoiler, but the less spoilery way to describe it is it's when Dyne gave up the mantle of being Dragon Master and Ghaleon lost all hope.

...Yes, I know that's not actual dialogue from the game, but the shots looked too plain without something there. helped me with the subtitle text and helped me with the technical art details. I hope that doesn't disqualify me for the contest. I've been working four days solid on this.

This scene is why Lunar happens, and is a very important emotional moment. Ghaleon was betrayed, disillusioned, disheartened, angry, agonized, and more. Dyne felt hopeful, but I can't help but think that his biggest regret is what happened between him and Ghaleon. Dyne abandoned himself for Althena's sake. Or at least that's one way it could be viewed. I'm sure that he has no regrets in helping her, but no one can argue the cost wasn't steep. Even if Dyne is all smiles normally, maybe for a moment, when he realizes what he gave up and who he hurt in the process, he could show the weight of what he had done.

I like to think of this as being the unseen moment in the game where Ghaleon confronted Dyne directly before he stormed down those stairs with such anger in his heart.

This is really nicely done. The color and shading are excellent. This is definitely a step up from your previous works. This piece shows how much your skill has grown. Excellent work!

I really do love the first panel of the strip.

Thanks a lot! I really tried my hardest to step up my game here.

Me too. Ghaleon is just so tragic and I really wanted to emphasize that.

You actually uploaded something! It's been awhile~.

I do like how you rendered Gal's angry expressions. Then again, you seem to be getting very adept at drawing emotion when it comes to things like anger, sadness, despair... Not that this is a *bad thing* necessarily but why are so many of your arts portraying such dark emotions, if I may be so bold to ask? XD;

Nice work on the colors and shading~. The lineart is super clean and crisp too.

Yesssss, yes it has hasn't it?

Really? I thought most of my art was lighthearted. Maybe I should have a breast or penis joke in the next picture.

Seriously though I like provoking emotion in my art and when I come across characters who I find rather tragic I want to convey their emotion, particularly to those who never considered why a story element might be just so sad when one gives it more thought. Like with Bakura his story really is darn sad when you think about it. The anime and manga never really did the tragedy justice and that's a darn shame since every other villain got time in the spotlight to wangst, and Bakura was the main antagonist in the series!

In this case I had to draw a scene from a Lunar game. The idea hit me to do this particular moment and show more of Dyne and Ghaleon's emotions that they likely felt at the time. This was a huge defining moment in the game, one that I felt was woefully downplayed, really, so it made sense that if I could picture it better in my head then I could do it justice. Sadly I can still think of how I could have done it better if I had more time to work on it. Oh well. Maybe someday I'll redraw it. In the meantime I hope the remake does a bit more with these two and their history together.

And thanks for the compliments! This picture taught me quite a lot about line art and cell shading.

Hahaha, wut? XD;;; A breast or penis joke = happy and lighthearted version of Yuki-arts? That was... random. XD;;

I guess it was an observation on how most of your strongest emotive works mainly focus on the darker emotions. There are light-hearted and silly cracktastical pics you have been known to do and your style has always been cute (regardless of mood). Combining these two aspects (sinfully cute + darker themes) don't seem to be the type of things you'd ever expect to see work well together, but somehow you always manage it. Consider it a gift~. XD;

It would be really nice to one day see you upload a strong emotive pic on emotions sitting on the opposite side of the spectrum (ex: love, joy, contentment, eagerness, ect). I realize that these feelings may be harder to dig into and feel to adequately express on paper/via tablet/mouse than the darker emotions. I was asked the same question once (why do all my characters look so sad/angry? Why won't I draw more uplifting emotions with the sort of strength I do the others?) and I quickly realized it was actually quite difficult to do. (Especially when you're reeeeeeeaaaallllly not feeling it!) Haha. Just something to think about I guess. /ramble?

The series may have downplayed the more tragic parts but thankfully there are fanart, fanfic and doujinshi to help fill in the gaps, ne? (Besides, I kind of doubt Bakura is the type to sit and emo-wangst about his tragic past. He's moved on and gotten stronger because of it and that's why I think he's such a beloved character and antagonist in the series. It doesn't hurt that he's one of the craftiest/intriguing/loveable villians in the series that you can't help but have a love-hate relationship with. Bakura's never boring, that's for sure!) <-(sorry, the unpredictable psychotic genius characters are ALWAYS fun~. Always. Lovelovelove them.) /ranty ramblage now?! XD;;;;

And you're welcome. :3 Glad to be of service (at least a tiny bit)? Even us artists need to know what we're doing right once in awhile (as so many are often eager to either point out how much it sucks *or* how zomgyouragodatdrawing but won't tell you *what* they like, just that, "it's cute/cool/better-than-I-could-draw". And that's usually if a comment is left on it at all.)

Oh, and I know this is completely freaking random but seeing this pic motivated me to finally draw a Lunar fanart. The above fanart can obviously send subliminal messages that motivate people to pick up their drawing implements and make Lunar fanart. XD;;; No lie, it's very bizarre.

I'm all about random jokes, bb.

Thanks!

I have before actually, but those sort of emotions usually are very subtle. Sadness/hatred/anger usually invokes more energy because the person is stressed. Emotions that make you happy make you relaxed, so not as much energy is spent to contort one's expressions. Over-emphasizing happy emotions takes it into silliness territory, which is more suitable for a humorous picture. It really is quite tricky to invoke emotions in the viewer when they look at your work.

Well... actually it's not so much he moved on as he's completely out of his mind, which is what makes it really tragic. As a fan I feel gypped that he was never freed from Zork's clutches like Dartz was freed from Orichalcos. As a writer I face palm at how it was glossed over when it was a huge point in the series that could have been better exploited and instead was tossed away due to time constraints.

So true, so true. Having constructive criticism/praise helps us improve quite a bit.

Awesome! Glad I could inspire!

Though the somewhat-too-uniform line thickness gives it away a bit at large scale, when I had this in smallview (as opposed to fullview), I thought they WERE screenshots at first! You've got cell-shading down perfectly.

I know, right? I wanted to make my grand revival a few months ago. Better late than never right?

Same here. I love making pseudo screen shots. It makes me feel like I've made a secret hidden part of an anime.

Three words: references, references, references. Pay attention to how light falls on the body at varying angles and how it affects the shadows. Pay attention to color differences for shadows and highlights and how to properly achieve the minimal color schemes to make it look as if it was animated by a bazillion needed for an episode.
