I love everything. The picture. The story of your cat.And the rant about cat food. Also whilst reading about your cat puking,I heard my cat gagging. Then she threw up.We feed our cats Meow Mix.
I'm crazy about my cats and cats in general and I find this strange topic to be very informative and great.

Good info! I like to research as well, I worry to crap about my kittens health >.< but it's pretty amazing how much crap they put in the foods! It was making little Jack sick D8 I thought Purina would be good but it didn't even have kitten stuff in it for the age it gave... But we got some Royal Canin, and I'm not sure about adults but the kitten dry food is pretty good from what I've seen, I didn't see any by-product at all nor anything that seemed weird for cats to eat, and my kitten just LOVES it (it's supposed to have milk or formula in it ^.^) I'll probably research more on it but so far it's a pretty good food to try 83

You know, if it's a quality brand kitten food with high protein, it is perfectly acceptable to feed it to the cat as an adult as well. Cats are carnivores. Cats need protein.
Most cat food that is designed for their "golden years" contains a lot of fiber. Now, I don't have the fact to facts but I don't think high fiber is good for them. Correct me if I'm wrong but just because a cat gets old (past 6) in the wild doesn't mean it will stop hunting and go knaw on tree bark.

Can you buy online? BTW, if buying online, only buy dry. Also, Fancy Feast is the best out of those you listed. I feed my kitten that since I don't have access to any higher grade good right now.

Expensive =/= High Quality.
The food that my cats loves to eat the most is Meow Mix. It's like delicious crack to him. However, it's far from healthy.

I have noticed that my cats have dryer looking fur lately. And our 2 socks usually throws up meow mix, even the hair ball formula! I also noticed that corn causes some skin problems in some of my cats. Wild blue is good for that but yeah! It is expensive!! I'll just have to find a way to make it all work. Thanks for the info. Some i already knew but the rainbow puke was a new one on me!

Google. Mother fucking Google.
You could buy online. If you have a country store somewhere, that'd be good too. I found the cat food I currently buy at some family own warehouse thing. I didn't even realize that this place existed until like, a couple of months ago. I found it while searching up "Chicken Soup for Cat Lover's soul". Google tracks you so it like, came up with a couple of stores near here, including the country store.
If you had a PetsMart/ Petco, you can find some of the more expensive brands such as Blue Mountain.

Blue Buffalo is good too. Don't purchase IAMS though if you are against animal testing, they preform some pretty cruel experiments and if you don't wish to give your money to those sorts of places, there are other choices out there.

Yes, you can put water in with dry cat food. That is what we do with our cat sometimes. It helps them get the moisture they need.

I have eight cats (was a cat groomer not a collector so sometimes we ended up with strays just because they like us so much *roll eyes*). Four of them are getting elderly (around 14) so they get a mixture of dry Science Diet for older cats and canned friskies. They've been doing well. My other four.....2 are youngsters, two are older. Three get Indoor formula purina dry food while the fourth who has a weight problem and arthritis in her back legs, gets a small can of science diet twice a day. Does it get expensive...you bet your ass it does. I can't afford to get the more purer quality stuff but my oldsters are doing okay on this diet and I can just afford it. Good thing I'm retired military because I save by buying their food on base. I salute you for doing such excellent research on this subject and I'll keep it in mind when I'm finally back to two cats. Don't ever want so many like I have now, again, believe me. The two younger cats are my daughters anyway. LOL So I really only have six but you mothers end up caring for all anyway.

YuMei-sama In reply to ulyferal [2011-04-09 16:55:12 +0000 UTC]
Eight? Oh wow. Honestly though, switching to a medium quality food like Chicken Soup for the cat lover's soul would be cheaper than trying to buy 3 or 4 different brands. Especially that Science Diet stuff. It's soo overpriced. It's not that much better than meow mix.
π: 0 β©: 1
ulyferal In reply to YuMei-sama [2011-04-09 17:08:57 +0000 UTC]
I know but never seen that cat food around here at all. Blue mountain is very popular but I don't think much of it. Then there's the picky cats that wont' eat it and unfortunately I have a couple of those. However, I'll keep your information and have a look around for my other cats. I don't have to buy much science diet fortunately, and yes it is better than Meow Mix. When I first began owning cats I fed them a mix of several different brands until I learned it was actually costing me more as it went right through the cat's too fast. The more premium foods last a cat better but I can't always afford it. I can only get what the base is willing to carry right now as I'm on a tight budget.
π: 0 β©: 1
YuMei-sama In reply to ulyferal [2011-04-09 17:15:43 +0000 UTC]
Blue Mountain is a sub-genre of Blue Buffalo.
Chicken Soup for the cat Lover's soul or Felidae is relatively cheap. You can get a 7 lbs bag for around 9 dollars online. If you buy it in a pet food specialty store, it'll usually cost 13 dollars. Both of which are cheaper and better than Science Diet.
However, it won't kill your cats if you feed them a generic food brand such as Meow Mix or Whiskas for a few weeks while you're waiting for a better quality food.
That's what I'm forced to do right now. My cat is eating Whiskas while I'm waiting for the opportunity to restock on Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's soup. As a simple teenager, I don't have any means of transportation to the store nor do I have any cash. I'm completely dependent on my guardians since they refuse to let me work.
Everyone's situation is different and everyone will just have to make do the best they can.
π: 0 β©: 1
ulyferal In reply to YuMei-sama [2011-04-09 22:01:02 +0000 UTC]
You are definitely right about that. Purina Indoor Formula is a better choice when you can't afford the premium stuff. For the number of cats I have 7 pounds wouldn't last 2 weeks. LOL. Have to buy 16pd bag of Purina and 7pd Science Diet to get through a month. Our pets do cost us over $100 a month. *sigh* what we do for our beloved friends.

My cat eats kind of junk food, I guess. It's called Darling, but she's already 11 years old and quite fit and healthy (she had never got any health problems throughout her life). She doesn't have any skin/coat issues. Is there any reason to change food brand? How long would it take to develop health problems for this cat?
I am aware of cat/dog food things, there is a similar stamp on DA - it says it all - [link]
Though, there is something much more important than brand of pet food, whether it's good or bad. The most well-known on internet agility trainer Silvia Trkman feed her dogs with junk food (her dogs live up to 18 years). But all that food is what her dogs win in the competitions. She says, "I eat rather poorly too." Think about it, folks. I find it a little bizarre when owners feed their pets better than they could afford to eat; why would you care about what your dog eat but nothing about what do you eat? It all starts here, I suppose.
