Description For the past couple of days, I've been researching cat food. I feed my own baby Meow Mix and/or Friskies. Occasionally, I'll go buy a can of Fancy Feast.
My cat, everytime he eats Meow Mix, he throws up rainbows. I shit you not. In his bowl, he regurgitates some of the food and it usually comes out rainbow. And he loves it.

EVERY.SINGLE.FUCKING.TIME.HE.EATS.

I passed it off as normal after a while and simply thought it was either a giant ass chunk of food that I didn't see earlier or a hairball.

However, as I researched in depth a bit more, I found that many cats that eat Meow Mix do the same. I also found that one of the biggest ingredients in said food was corn. CORN. If you haven't noticed, cats shouldn't eat corn. They can't digest it very well and it usually just passes right through. That's why the label tells you to feed your cat like, 2-3 cups a day.

Chicken by-product. Make no mistake, chicken-by-product is not a good thing. It's the necks, feathers, beaks, bones, ect; Anything not good enough for people to eat. That's sad considering most of the meat we already eat is shittly produced.

I mean, I would be okay with chicken-by-product since cats in the wild generally eat some of those parts but when it's the second fucking ingredient on the label, PLUS, I saw no real meat on there until like, the tenth ingredient, FUCKING HELL NAW.

Be wasting my money on this shit.

If I wanna feed my cat corn and chicken feathers, I can do that for free. 7 dollars a bag is not worth it.

However, it IS nutritionally safe. IF, you feed all 2-3 cups. AND, if your cat doesn't throw it all up. AND, if you're cat doesn't die first. Oh, BUT IT'S 100% NUTRITION!!!11! Haha, no. You are only allowed to sell cat food if it's completely balanced.

On top of this shit, my cat was always hungry ALWAYS.

His fur was always dry and so was his skin.
He's 6 years now and I've seen at least 80% of the internet warned me that he was gonna develop MAJOR problems later in life. Kidney disease, diabetes, ect;

Diebetes mostly because, cats cannot digest carbohydrates. It stores as sugar. That's why I strongly oppose any kind of vegan food for cats. The cat "thriving" is bullshit.

Basically, think about it like this. For cats, carbs break down into sugar. Most cats eat stuff like meow mix, friskies, I.E. things that have carbs in them. The reason why cats still live a couple of years is the same reason as us.

Imagine a child eating sugar. Imagine a teenage eating sugar. They both eat a shitload of sugar. It's not good for them but they still eat it and are somewhat okay. Now, take the amount of sugar they eat and feed that to a 60 year old person. Hell, try feeding it to a 30 year old. Not doing so great now huh?

This concept applies to cats. As in, too much sugar at an old age = diabetes. Diabetes = death because most people who own cats generally cannot afford that kind of medical treatment.

So, I looked up all the rest of the cat foods I saw in the store to see which one was good. Basically, Iams, Purina, Whiskas, Nutro, Good Life Recipe, Eukanuba, 9 lives, Friskies, Science Diet, Meow Mix, and anything else you can find in WalMart/Petco is bad. This applies to the dry food variants of these brands AND THE WET FOODS. Just because it looks like meat, doesn't mean it is.

Science diet was the best, still shitty, but better than Meow Mix a bit.

SO, me being the cat lover I am, I spent the next 3 days researching a good cat food that was also cheap. I'm asian, I'm cheap. 20 dollars for a 4 lbs bag? I don't love my cat THAT much.

So, my choices were narrowed down to Chicken Soup for the Cat lover's soul and Felidae. Both relatively cheap. 6lbs bag was 9 dollars average.

BTW, pro tip, chicken meal is better than chicken by itself. Meal means that it's a dehydrated form of the meat. When you begin cooking, just plain chicken, is made up of mostly water.
It'll boil down and you'll be left with not as much nutrients. So, -insert meat here- meal should always be in the top ingredients.

This was totally ripped from my journel, go there to read full story.

Oh, an another tip, Innova, Wild Blue, and Wellness are really good too. Albeit expensive but worth the price. Since they usually tell you to feed less because it's very nutritionally dense.

Also, if you can, try to get the wet food or combine wet and dry.

I think you can also try putting some water on the dry food but I'm not too sure about that.

Cats are designed to get most of their moisture intake from their prey.

If they drink water by themselves and separately, they only get 50% as much as they need. It's not particularly life urgent right now but prolonged dehydration can lead to urinary problems and infections.

PetSmart carries Wild Blue and Wellness I believe....

Asking your vet about what kinds of food to get is probably useless since they'll just tell you to buy Science Diet or Friskies. Vets get very little education in nutrition.

Some vets might be like, amazing and know everything but most are just standard.

If you really wanna try, go raw. BUT,
DO RESEARCH SO YOU DON'T FUCK UP LIKE THE FAGGOT YOU ARE

I personally, am too lazy so I'll just stick to buying cat food.

Best thing to do is, research by yourself. Snoop around google.

Meow Mix does not belong to me, neither does any other brand I named.

I'm not trying to tell you to never buy those brands, just trying to educate.

more like trying not to get sued

Good info! I like to research as well, I worry to crap about my kittens health >.< but it's pretty amazing how much crap they put in the foods! It was making little Jack sick D8 I thought Purina would be good but it didn't even have kitten stuff in it for the age it gave... But we got some Royal Canin, and I'm not sure about adults but the kitten dry food is pretty good from what I've seen, I didn't see any by-product at all nor anything that seemed weird for cats to eat, and my kitten just LOVES it (it's supposed to have milk or formula in it ^.^) I'll probably research more on it but so far it's a pretty good food to try 83

YuMei-sama In reply to KelsieWG [2011-07-06 03:13:03 +0000 UTC]

You know, if it's a quality brand kitten food with high protein, it is perfectly acceptable to feed it to the cat as an adult as well. Cats are carnivores. Cats need protein.

Most cat food that is designed for their "golden years" contains a lot of fiber. Now, I don't have the fact to facts but I don't think high fiber is good for them. Correct me if I'm wrong but just because a cat gets old (past 6) in the wild doesn't mean it will stop hunting and go knaw on tree bark.

Google. Mother fucking Google.

You could buy online. If you have a country store somewhere, that'd be good too. I found the cat food I currently buy at some family own warehouse thing. I didn't even realize that this place existed until like, a couple of months ago. I found it while searching up "Chicken Soup for Cat Lover's soul". Google tracks you so it like, came up with a couple of stores near here, including the country store.

If you had a PetsMart/ Petco, you can find some of the more expensive brands such as Blue Mountain.

I have eight cats (was a cat groomer not a collector so sometimes we ended up with strays just because they like us so much *roll eyes*). Four of them are getting elderly (around 14) so they get a mixture of dry Science Diet for older cats and canned friskies. They've been doing well. My other four.....2 are youngsters, two are older. Three get Indoor formula purina dry food while the fourth who has a weight problem and arthritis in her back legs, gets a small can of science diet twice a day. Does it get expensive...you bet your ass it does. I can't afford to get the more purer quality stuff but my oldsters are doing okay on this diet and I can just afford it. Good thing I'm retired military because I save by buying their food on base. I salute you for doing such excellent research on this subject and I'll keep it in mind when I'm finally back to two cats. Don't ever want so many like I have now, again, believe me. The two younger cats are my daughters anyway. LOL So I really only have six but you mothers end up caring for all anyway.

YuMei-sama In reply to ulyferal [2011-04-09 16:55:12 +0000 UTC]

Eight? Oh wow. Honestly though, switching to a medium quality food like Chicken Soup for the cat lover's soul would be cheaper than trying to buy 3 or 4 different brands. Especially that Science Diet stuff. It's soo overpriced. It's not that much better than meow mix.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ulyferal In reply to YuMei-sama [2011-04-09 17:08:57 +0000 UTC]

I know but never seen that cat food around here at all. Blue mountain is very popular but I don't think much of it. Then there's the picky cats that wont' eat it and unfortunately I have a couple of those. However, I'll keep your information and have a look around for my other cats. I don't have to buy much science diet fortunately, and yes it is better than Meow Mix. When I first began owning cats I fed them a mix of several different brands until I learned it was actually costing me more as it went right through the cat's too fast. The more premium foods last a cat better but I can't always afford it. I can only get what the base is willing to carry right now as I'm on a tight budget.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

YuMei-sama In reply to ulyferal [2011-04-09 17:15:43 +0000 UTC]

Blue Mountain is a sub-genre of Blue Buffalo.

Chicken Soup for the cat Lover's soul or Felidae is relatively cheap. You can get a 7 lbs bag for around 9 dollars online. If you buy it in a pet food specialty store, it'll usually cost 13 dollars. Both of which are cheaper and better than Science Diet.

However, it won't kill your cats if you feed them a generic food brand such as Meow Mix or Whiskas for a few weeks while you're waiting for a better quality food.

That's what I'm forced to do right now. My cat is eating Whiskas while I'm waiting for the opportunity to restock on Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's soup. As a simple teenager, I don't have any means of transportation to the store nor do I have any cash. I'm completely dependent on my guardians since they refuse to let me work.

Everyone's situation is different and everyone will just have to make do the best they can.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ulyferal In reply to YuMei-sama [2011-04-09 22:01:02 +0000 UTC]

You are definitely right about that. Purina Indoor Formula is a better choice when you can't afford the premium stuff. For the number of cats I have 7 pounds wouldn't last 2 weeks. LOL. Have to buy 16pd bag of Purina and 7pd Science Diet to get through a month. Our pets do cost us over $100 a month. *sigh* what we do for our beloved friends.

My cat eats kind of junk food, I guess. It's called Darling, but she's already 11 years old and quite fit and healthy (she had never got any health problems throughout her life). She doesn't have any skin/coat issues. Is there any reason to change food brand? How long would it take to develop health problems for this cat?
I am aware of cat/dog food things, there is a similar stamp on DA - it says it all - [link]

Though, there is something much more important than brand of pet food, whether it's good or bad. The most well-known on internet agility trainer Silvia Trkman feed her dogs with junk food (her dogs live up to 18 years). But all that food is what her dogs win in the competitions. She says, "I eat rather poorly too." Think about it, folks. I find it a little bizarre when owners feed their pets better than they could afford to eat; why would you care about what your dog eat but nothing about what do you eat? It all starts here, I suppose.
