Seriously, you have to teach em how to do that line up poster thing. Cos, I tried to make one for my upcoming anime projects but didn't work out

For me it's a pretty simple thing. At least if you use silouettes because then you don't have to draw the faces and detailed clothing etc. The major thing is to get the personality of the character through the hair and the general pose. In other words, draw an aproximate pose how your character should be standing, then add the hair. Then add some clothes to the outer body lines, like the frils or a skirt, or some folds to indicate clothing. Just some kind of round shaped things that stick out from the general body.
I think the major thing is to get rid of that: It has to be perfect- thinking because it's really just the outlines and the human brain will transform the rather strange shape he sees into a perosn with clothes on. More or less.
The background is what's tricky for me. In these two cases I was lucky that I had an idea right away. I had to fiddle with the colors for this one though.
