Hummingbird meets the Hunter.Ahh, this one was fun! I'm still working out what sort of style I'd like to use when coloring this comic, so after trying a more painterly piece last time, I went for a more flat, graphic approach this time around. It went pretty smoothly!
Each screen in the background is actually an illustration of a chapter in the comic - an important setting or a central character.

There's no one specific place! I've been slowly collecting pretty papers over the past several years, so it's mostly just a matter of keeping an eye out. Craft stores and fine arts supply stores usually have at least a small collection of decorative papers, though.

I love those panels.Β Somehow in spite of that violent pink slash and the drama of the foreground, the panels manage to be evocative and sad.Β It's a weird juxtaposition but it works and getting through that first super-dynamic layer is really rewarding.Β Bravo, this is super cool.Β People should do art nouveau panels more; what say you?

Oh my, thank you for the thoughtful comment! The panels are actually my favorite part of this particular drawing, so it's very rewarding for me that you not only paid attention to them, but enjoyed them so much.
As for art nouveau panels, yes! I love the art nouveau aesthetic, and am always delighted when I see elements of it in other work.

How are things going for you guys? I guess you've been weathering the storm okay?

If y'mean the hurricane, we did okay! Our street flooded and we lost power for a week or so, but nobody was hurt and nothing in the apartment got damaged, so yeah - all in all, it worked out as well as we could've hoped.

The snowstorm was unpleasant, but nothing bad. Mostly just THERE'S SNOW IN MY EYES DAMMIT.
Did the hurricane affect you guys up north?

A little, but not nearly as bad-- we had some heavy winds on Monday night, enough to down some trees and take out a bunch of power lines, but no flooding (and all the outages were resolved within 72 hours). The snowstorm completely passed us over, too, we actually had a couple of unseasonably warm days XD
Toronto is inside its own weather bubble!
