Description For a class assignment.

We had to choose a book, play, fairy tale, or some other textual narrative and do a series of at least three illustrations, showing the beginning of a conflict, the middle, and the end. Then we were to insert excerpts from the text directly referenced by the illustrations, as if they were being laid out in a real book.

I picked "The Thief" by Megan Whalen Turner, which is one of my favorite books of all time. ...Unfortunately, I did not actually have my copy of the book on hand, so... those words along there? They are not actually from the text. They are what I remember from it. And I believe they are actually pretty damn close. That's how many times I've read it.

This particular scene is from early on in the book, while the protagonist is languishing in prison.

A set with [link] . Just the two, because I don't like how the other paintings for this set came out. -_-

I picked it up by chance in high school about 6 years ago and I've yet to meet anyone who's read it, apart from people I recommend it to. It's so amazing!!!

It is, I agree! I first read it in... oh, I think it was middle school? Or possibly elementary school. I remember being absolutely FLOORED by the twist at the end.

SAME! I couldn't believe it! I sat there like ..what? And every time I read it again I notice new hints that point towards it and should have made it so obvious, but had so much double-meaning I never noticed!! And the next books are almost as spectacular!

Yes! Out of the sequels, I think "King of Attolia" is my favorite. I liked getting to see Gen through the eyes of a long-suffering acquaintance.

Ooooh, so hard to choose... I'd probably agree, although I really loved A Conspiracy of Kings, and Gen's misery in The Queen of Attolia was so adorable... they're all amazing!!

My friend told me to pass on the message when I showed her this:
"How embarrassing! XD XD XD XD"
The following day we were laughing our heads off, we were riding scooters, and I fell off of mine and landed in the dirt and I got up as if nothing happened, so... GUESS WHAT I SAID?? XDD I'M NOT EVEN KIDDING, I QUOTED THE DARN BOOK!
"I wanted to look lithe, graceful, and maybe even feral as I rode my scooter down the concrete sidewalk.
Instead, I fell on my knee and scraped up my hand. I hoped nobody would notice... But everyone on the block stared."
OH MY GOD. WE LAUGHED SO FREAKING HARD!
Jeez, my knee still hurts from that and it was yesterday, but oh my (gods) this picture made it stop hurting a ton! XD XD

Eeyep. One of the ways I would think of him.

xD

The plot's kind of hard to follow along with. Did you have that problem at all?

Yutaan In reply to YunaDarkrayne [2013-10-18 03:03:49 +0000 UTC]

During The Thief? Not particularly! I remember being really surprised by the ending the first time I'd read it, but had followed the plot fine up to that point, and despite my surprise, the ending itself made sense.

I think the one where I had the most trouble following the political machinations and such was the third book, King of Attolia... but a few rereads cleared things up. Was there a particular part you were having trouble with? (Er, it's been a while since I've read Queen of Attolia or Conspiracy of Kings, though, so I don't think I'd be able to help much with those....)

YunaDarkrayne In reply to Yutaan [2013-10-24 06:26:54 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I'm still on the first book. And that's probably the only one I'm going to read. xD... Yeah, uh... Another question, would you recommend the other books? I'm a little bit of a wimp about reading sequels.

Does it have a good ending, if shocking? Don't tell me what it is, I just want to make sure it has an all right ending and stuff.

Hm. The plot is pretty good and cleared up now. I just needed to give it a little time.

Yutaan In reply to YunaDarkrayne [2013-10-24 07:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh, the ending is what made me love the first book, actually! It took me by surprise, but it was very well-done, I thought.

The sequels are a little different in tone from the first book - they get rather more into the politics of the world the author has created, and sometimes can get quite dark. (For example, Queen of Attolia, the second book in the series, has some very dark parts, but I personally thought it was the best-written [although it wasn't my personal favorite of the series].) There are still lighthearted parts, fantastical mythology, and snark galore, though, so if that's up your alley, then yes! I'd definitely recommend them!

YunaDarkrayne In reply to Yutaan [2013-10-25 03:51:56 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I'm at a pretty sad part in the book. LOADS of plot twists. Sort of confusing. Oh well, as long as there is a happy ending. c;
Hm, we'll see if I actually read the sequels. I'm not much for the political parts in it. I like more of the hilarious parts that really get into Gen's personality, this picture for example.

Gen reminds me a bit of Flynn Rider from Tangled, strange to be comparing him to a Disney character, but really. You gotta admit... Eugene sounds like Eugenides, as well...

Yutaan In reply to YunaDarkrayne [2013-10-25 16:38:50 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. Well, the sequels do get pretty political, but they are VERY good, so I guess it could go either way! ^_^ I hope you'll like them, though!

Ahaha, and that's actually what I thought of when Flynn revealed his name, and let out a giant "HEH" in the middle of the theater. :face in hands:

Funny, because before I even heard of The Thief, I started writing a book about a girl that became a thief and she got pretty cocky about herself and started saying "I am not A thief, I'm THE thief!" So I'll bet you can guess what I thought when I went to my school library and saw a book with the title The Thief. xD

Oh my god, I'll bet you anything they did that on purpose! XDDD

Are you sure you don't want to put the others up? I'd really like to see them! I love this book and there are far too few illustrations/fanarts of it.

Ah, I did three paintings total, and put up two of them, so I think I did all right on that front! The third one was... really bad... I don't wish to subject anyone to it....

But I'm glad you like the painting!

Squight [2012-09-23 08:24:55 +0000 UTC]

wow this is really good, awkward positions like this are SOOOO hard to do. It really looks exactly how the scene in the book is described.

isn't gen's skin supposed to be significantly darker than this, though? I just remember in the book it was a problem because he couldn't pretend to be full sounisian because he was too dark, so he said his mother was eddisian. it's made pretty apparent in the books that eddisians aren't white.

Yutaan In reply to Squight [2012-09-24 01:03:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it! This one was fun to paint.

And yes, Gen is not supposed to be white - that was something that bothered me when I painted it. But it was done after two all-nighters, in the last hour before class started, so in the end I was like GOOD ENOUGH and called it done.

However, if I were to paint this series now, I would indeed do it differently, and would try to be more accurate to the description of Gen in the books. In fact, since I adore these books more than anything, there's a good chance I will do more illustrations from it! So hopefully I'll have another chance.

I'm in a life drawing class right now and awkward poses are SO hard to make look natural! I really like your water-color-ey style, it looks like a children's book illustration. some of the other scenes from the Thief, like the ones with scenery, would look really good done like this.

I made a book trailer for QoA and used a white actor for Gen (not for Eddis, though) and if I redid it I'd change it as well. I didn't think about it that much but I'm definitely more aware now.

I'm going to follow you in hopes of more queen's thief art! :3

Ahhh, life drawing - I loved doing life drawing at school, gotta find a class or something around my apartment now....

I enjoyed using watercolors, and might use them again at some point, but I realized that I wasn't really utilizing them the way they should have been used.... Still, I'd liked to give them another shot.

Ooh, a book trailer! How neat!
