Today is Chinese New Year. I tried to draw something happy for it but it felt too forced and after a few failed attempts, I realized it’s because it’s hard to feel happy when I miss my family. My grandparents raised me when my parents weren’t present. My parents were emotionally abusive which took years of therapy to recover from, so my grandparents are more like my real parents.
The thought of family during the holidays has always been so bittersweet. The nostalgic memories of loneliness and longing. Some years I celebrate the holiday, some years it hurts to think about.

It's a really great scene. I think it's really good that the traditional theme has been consistently implemented. with the lamp, as well as with the girl's clothes. The drawing style has also become very beautiful. The colors look like from a book. The proportions and the pose of the girl are very realistic, the clothes also adapt to the movement. The expression has something sad that one shows very gently without exaggerated facial expressions. well done.

it is sad what the inspiration for this came from, because the best thing of celebrating holidays like the New Year is in fact having a wonderful time with the family, with the dear ones, a time when you just take a break from every stressful daily chores and for once a year reunite family, visit friends and relatives, eat good food and drink nice beverages...
But.. when just the family, or the parents, happen to be abusive.. all the purpose of having this "one-in-a-year" event , years after years, is gone away... Some wounds from the early days, are hard to heal.. sometimes some childhood trauma can never heal, and is often "hidden away" somewhere deep in a dark corner of the mind.... where it never dissapears but from there often it can still hount the thoughts, and may influence you to feel and/or do some things that you can't explain why
At least you found the cause, many never do...
The thing is, intense feelings, good or bad, can be used as inspiration for art... The intense "energy" they have give power to an art piece... many great artists whose works now we admire in museums or are being sold for big money, had many problems in real life, be it from poverty, illness, sadness, drink or drug abuse, mental suffering etc... those gave them power to create, and even pain can be a fuel for inspiration sometimes....
I wish you to get the power to fight the ghosts of past, and Happy Chinese Year!

Thank you for including this little reminder of how those traditional events where you're supposed to happily gather with family and friends, aren't happy times for everyone.

Although I am ill-equipped to say something to fully cheer you up, the fact that you remember the good memories is a sign that there is a silver lining to this day. I'm sure everyone will agree that it's a good thing your grandparents were around when you needed someone the most. Even though your character's face is melancholic, the bright colors make the scene just a bit brighter.
