Description edit: fixed his spots. hrgl. ;___;

Tadeo strikes me as a kid who doesn't take any crap.

Also, I realized like two-thirds of the way through that Tadeo isn't quite that buff around the midriff (whereas the guy in the reference I used is). Maybe this is high school Tadeo?

I also realized at about the same interval of time that this is the first time I've colored a sketch... any time I've colored something, it's been finished lines or lineless stuff.
And I really didn't like it. I was caught between exactness and abstractness/relaxed coloring, and I was caught pants-down confused quite a bit in the process. (I also colored it three times before I got a version I liked.) I won't be doing this sort of coloring again, methinks.

I'm always looking to get better. Critiques and comments are appreciated. I promise I will not take low star ratings as an insult if you justify them. :3

He kind of haves a noble look to him. I think it looks rather good. And surprisingly I too drew him in a sketch like this and colored it. It takes time doing it this way, but the results can be rather good.

I quite like this coloring style you did. Though maybe some more shading on his face? (like, for the nose and stuff)

wai tankyu. :3
Aye, I was a bit lackluster with the facial shading. I was also not 100% sure how to structure his head when facing that direction. herp. x__x; MOAR PRACTICE WHEEEEE

damn, you've come a long way...
can't critique formally, so here's a couple things. Elbow joint seems off. He should probably either have more muscle flesh on the top of the forarm going into the crook of his elbow, or the joint itself needs to be moved to near where the bottom of the fluff on his elbow is. Way it is, looks like he either has two sequential joints or a broken arm. I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume this is the direct result of using a heftier reference. It might be nice to cleave to character body shape, but I'm not really seeing an easy fix beyond giving in to the heftier forearms the model demands. That light shading on the flesh (and pants) is completely awesome, but it casts some of your other efforts in contrast. The brown face stripe, the tail and the hair all suffer a bit as a result because they just don't share a consistency. The tail might have been better set off with a mid range color, say from the leftish and a gradation to the light touched area, or maybe just a strip of the light touched area with the mid range being the main color. It kinda feels washed out with all that light (although the pattern of shade at the base and color usage there is completely boss). The hair and forehead strip just feel to flat when compared with the rest of the painting. Obviously you might have just decided to leave it that way on purpose, but if you really want to polish the peice there's a couple cool anime style hair tutorials out there (you might like this [link] can't remember if i've pitched it at you before or not). Other than that? I dunno, maybe clean up the edges a bit on the chest and belly. The sketchy look is really kinda awesome, but you want to keep the lines of your form clean. The top of the pants look interesting. Real clothes would often dip towards the front, especially when slung that low, but imagining that to be a rather rigid top works for me. I'd like to have seen what you would have done with the rest of the pants (armoured/padded sports gear perhaps? He does look like he might have just finished with some sort of athletics). Not gonna touch on the facial features, don't have the necessary expertise in that area (though I am wondering whether you tried to use a bit of shadow to define the nose when you were messing around with the color. Not really sure how I'd have done that myself)

In short I don't have enough info to really give it any sort of rating. It's striking. I like the idea of the piece and there is some very nice coloring and cool bits of form. It shows a foray into that wonderful juxtaposition of vector-ish line and form and smooth gradients so prevalent in some of our favorite art and is leaps and bounds beyond the coloring anatomy and form of some of your earlier work. If it was a relatively quick piece (at least beyond your coloring mishaps) and you like how it turned out or don't really feel like going back to it, the work does stand out nicely. There are a couple aspects which detract from the quality of the work as a whole, but it shows your mastery of a couple skills you haven't really shown off before and has a nice feel to it. You could likely spend an eternity messing about with the details without some solid inspiration, and frankly I would be more excited to see another work of this caliber. You seem to be very good at noting and proactively dealing with mistakes whether you notice yourself in your work or somebody points it out. I really like this piece. It displays a noticeable coalescence of the obvious sense of style you display elsewhere (notably your origami), and while there are certainly other pieces in your gallery that have merit I could certainly see being later able to point to this painting and say "yeah, that's where he started to get damn good."

You actually can critique formally :3 Need premium membership to request them, but anyone can write them!

Also thank you for taking the time to write this as I have been raised in the "sit there and take it!" style of creative writing critiques, I will not offer much in rebuttal, other than that this style of coloring/lining was an experiment, if anything, and I was not quite as pleased with it as I would like to be. I agree with practically all of your points, lol. And I'm not sure either what rating I would give it. Probably twos, lol. I will give this a good read (I just skimmed the major points) and shall try to improve. I thank you again, and am quite honored by the last comment. I thank you. :3

... really, I guess I have to go on a button hunt then. I wouldn't worry overmuch either way. It really is just personal opine, but you have really been making a serious effort to get better quickly, and it shows.

Lol. I'm just tired of sucking so hard. XD I dream of a day where I can regularly draw things I'm remotely proud of and/or actually appreciate the output quality of. I enjoy the drawing process, but I keep making shoddy piece after shoddy piece and it's really frustrating. So I've been trying to fix that.
I've also had ridiculous amounts of motivation and inspiration in recent weeks from *caninelove and =R-no71 (and transitively, *Edheloth ) and since chatting with them I've never been more stoked to practice drawing. I'm definitely going to be making more time in my schedule to draw this coming school year.
Thank you again for the critiques/comments/opinions. :3

dude, it took me a couple years before I could be proud of anything I put out myself. I'm dubious I'll ever reach the point where I finish things and can't find a couple spots where I wish i'd done something different (except perhaps in cases of a familiar subject... some iterations just come out amazing and you kinda stare at them knowing every step along the way and just overawed at the result ), but I've certainly put out more than one piece to this day that I'm proud of (and finally starting to get a couple in digital (fist pump) yess). As far as I know, you are trying to pick up both basic drawing skills and digital art techniques at the same time. That's a hella've a rough road man. In addition you are going at it without really having time for traditional art training, and you are learning formostly from stylized works. I don't know how many time's I've had it reiterated to me in one form or another that you need to do drawing from life exhaustively to get a solid grasp on form and 3-d shape before you think about stylizing stuff (this is often an abutment to those who learn drawing from manga and comic books and in the doing of it tend to make mistakes that become glaring upon any large amount of time spent with real life models). That being said, you seem to have a decent eye for form, and are so busy I've been really hesitant to recommend you take time away from learning from the stuff you really love (also you are bright enough to at least use references when you can), this isn't some case of teenage animu pretense at being an art-ist. (Although I really cannot over-recommend spending a little time with portraiture of friends and self (especially when they don't notice you doing it and aren't all self conscious)). I've made some pretty damn impressive gains after rather limited amounts of time with realistic drawing, and while I obviously prefer stylization in my work, the sense of 3-d shape is invaluable.

Though I'm learning from a very stylized ...style of art, everything I draw (and I mean every single pose) is referenced either from actual pictures of humans or very anatomically accurate (but stylized) drawings of characters. And I'm practicing thirty second poses every night since I got back to college, for anatomy practice. So I'm actually getting some decent practice; at least I'd like to think. whee. But yeah, I haven't done any real-life drawing. I'd like to. But I'll keep drawing for now as I am. I've always held to the absolute, steadfast rule that I draw what I like and what I want to, so it's always fun. :3

i'm kinda impressed at the amount of references you use. I certainly agree w/ the motivation (we have had to make multiple detailed drawings of pretty boring shit in classes), but i would suggest perhaps models or action figures then? might have to find you some toy sonics. Doesn't really matter what it is (tho, some fabric and water drawing practice are typically exellently useful). On the other hand you are drawing not as an art major, or with the intention of becoming a professional illustrator. With your schedule it might not be worth it to spend the time necessary for the deeper skillset...

Aye, I'm not really looking for professional skill or anything out of drawing. I just enjoy the characters so much, and want to get good enough to impress others and myself.
