Michael is sort of a temporary name, I could not think of a good one but I had to hand this in today. So till I think of a proper one this will have to do.

This was a character I did for my Cartoon Character Design class final last year. Wanted to try my luck at my college's student awards this year, which was why I compiled it into this chara sheet. There are two other characters I did for my CCD final that I quite like, but I ran out of time.
I doubt I'll win but wish me luck!

edit: oh shiii... drew his cowlick facing the wrong way in the back view. I blame sleep deprivation x_x Hopefully the judges wont notice or care.

Anyway, here's his bio copy pasted from the required rationale I sent this in with: (keep in mind this was written at 4am ><)

I wanted a very youthful, bright and curious character that is optimistic despite his circumstances. Someone who has his whole life ahead of him and is eager to make the best of it. I also wanted him to come off as a bit naive due to his age but still able to take care of himself.

Michael has a pretty thin build, almost scrawny, he’s at that stage where he’s growing into a young man but still retains much of his child-like features. His face is boyish with freckles and has bright, brown eyes. He is missing one tooth.
His clothes are very practical, most of which were scavenged or hand-me-downs. His coat is much too big for him, like it was made for a grown man, which it was, making him look tinier than he already is. His socks are faded, stained, and have holes worn into them. His pants have been repaired many times. He wears a pair of very old, very clunky and very ugly pair of boots. His smiley singlet, probably the only thing that wasn't scavenged, is the only piece of clothing he had the luxury of choosing, the rest being what he had to settle with. That too is just as worn and stained as the rest of his clothes and has had its collar badly stretched.
All this gives his attire a very drab and dull appearance. But flashes of his cheery personality still show through the many colourful earrings he wears and the brightly coloured pieces of string he uses to mend his pants. Michael is a magpie and likes to pick up and keep shiny objects or anything that catches his interest.
His most treasured belonging is his goggles. They are a pair of alchemist’s goggles that he found discarded with its lenses broken. He fixed them up and replaced the broken lenses with pieces of stained glass from a shattered church window and is quite proud of them. They’re not very useful since the stained glass distorts the view through them, but he likes to put them on and make believe he’s in a sort of dream world. Sometimes he fancies he can actually see things through them.

Michael comes from a very poor family, but his parents were very kind and selfless in raising him so he’s grown up relatively happy. But that’s not to say he was sheltered from the burdens of being poor. He’s just learned to deal with them without letting them get him down. He’s got a good head and can be very resourceful and has a talent for figuring out how things work and fixing them despite not having any formal training. So, he often uses his skills to help his family and neighbours out.

btw this was submitted under the Digital Animation category (for the contest), and this is the closest thing I could find to character design in DA's category system, so "Game Development Art" it is.
