Description
Artwork depicts the scene in which both Sweep and Penpal both leave their boundaries for the first time and end up encountering one another. The art fulfills Prompt 10 for Penpal as he leaves the wasteland for the first time and moves deeper into the very edge of the desert away from the flatter wastelands in which he was created, and the writing below fulfills the prompt for Sweep.
Origin Prompt 10 for Sweep, in which he departs from his boundary for the first time and flies until something sparkling catches his attention.
---
"Sweep has wandered very far, at first exceptionally nervous at first to leave behind his hoard of shiny things, but becoming progressively bolder as he encounters more and more things he makes mental note to return for at a later time. He leaves the beautiful city, soars through a boring forest and is disappointed to not find much of interest on a mountain before the gleam of sand at a distance on the other side catches his beady little eyes and he glides all the way down to take a closer look.
He lands in a fiery land, the heat far more like his own home in the chimney when it is filled with smoke even though the sun had begun to set. it was a heat very welcome to the small esk after the cool shade of the forest and chilled winds of the mountain. Sweep carefully tested the silken material beneath his tiny claw-like feet and found it like his own sooty body, but with sparkles and shines reflecting from the sunlight catching in it that he himself only possessed on the edges of his wings. It was golden in the sun, minute crystals refracting the light that then reflecting again in his inquisitive eyes. After a moment of awed silence he started to grab for it, desperate to collect as much as he could carry to take back home with him, but the small grains eluded him, his bitty fingers far too little and the grains of sand much too fine to hold.
it still took several minutes of color-changing leaves flinging sand here and there and unsuccessful attempts to store this treasure in the feathers of his wings where the real gold gleamed before he finally gave in, now feeling sour towards this gleaming treasure that would not allow him to possess it. He dourly took to the air once more, intending to return back to his gleaming city full of collectables, when something in the distance shone at him like a miniature sun all its own and he immediately forgot his frustrations to wheel around and pursue it. Sweep let the object fill his vision as it grew larger and larger, the heat increasing more and more the deeper he went, until he found the thing and settled on the ground again. It gleamed brightly as the sun set and the colors around him started to change from gold to blue. It had scratches on the surface the same as some of the other treasures he already possessed which meant that it had been made by humans. He knew this from the distinctive scratches in their strange shapes, but how it might have come to this distant, hot land, he did not care, only that this dazzling object was large and he could see himself reflecting in it as he approached.
He was busy admiring himself in the reflection and deciding how he would cary this thing he absolutely must now possess for himself over the mountain, through the trees, and into the safety of his hidden collection when the sand shifted and he jumped, startled to find the sky lit with bright twinkling gems and some other creature looming above him, so close to touching him that he let out a little hiss and arched his back like a cat to make himself seem larger. It was holding brightly colored lights aloft on swaying succulent tails inside of cages made of desiccated flowers. the lights changed colors as Sweep took them in and both creatures seemed to eye each other up, wordless for the moment and and nearly motionless save for the swaying motion of the tails and the flickering colors of the lights.
Instead of the fear Sweep had fully expected, this creature seemed to be amused by his very scary display of size and power, the strange succulent tails only leaned forward as if to get a better look at him instead of drawing back in terror. It was impossibly unimpressed by his ferocity even as as his tail rose up and wriggled, imitating fire, the leaves changing colors rapidly just like the flames he knew he could use if only he had to, but the large creature still did not fear him as he should, so he boomed out at it, using his imposing voice instead.
'This is my treasure! I found it first and you will leave, for I am a fierce and noble dragon!'
'This thing is strange, is it not?' It's voice was hissing and sort of wet sounding, which made Sweep shudder, even though it wasn't truly wet and only echoed inside of Sweep's head. He did not like it, but as it continued, it sounded as if there were multiple voices, one after another after another in strange fashion, as if there were many large creatures before him instead of a single one. Tails waved back and forth as if the voices came from them, though it was clearly just the set of eyes regarding him almost blankly that was the source of each voice. 'What is a dragon?' 'We should fight it. It is in our path!' Sweep tensed further at that one, 'No! It is not an enemy, it is...almost like us...'
Sweep prepared to open his fearsome jaws and let loose his fiery wrath when he finally noticed the black stuff dribbling behind and underneath the beast and it continued to drip onto the precious sand below it, staining it so it might never gleam under the sun again and that made Sweep even more uneasy, but it simply stood and stared, one voice following another in a confusing array of arguments with itself until a much smaller, creature with orange eyes, dripping even more than the larger one came too close and Sweep finally fled from the impending moisture, taking to the air and cursing the beast as he was forced to leave behind his new, gleaming treasure and wheeled home as fast as he could go. He liked the hot lands, but he did not like the inhabitants within them. He would have to return again and steal his precious shiny thing back from the beast at a later time, maybe when it wasn't looking."
