Description

Odin class is new type of cruiser called "Combat" cruiser. It is combination of light and heavy cruisers in one. Having excellent defenses and ECM capabilities of light cruiser as well powerful armament and defenses of heavy cruisers, Odin is created to replace two types of cruisers with one and reducing the costs. Class itself is truly impressive however its history was not bright one during design and construction phase.

There was many in German command that believe that such ship was not needed and that existing classes like Bauer class light cruiser and Berlin class heavy cruisers are more then capable to deal with any threat, that singular class was waste of resources. However economical advisers and admiralty believed that operating single cruiser type will reduce costs of maintenance as well allowing faster production rate. This really didn't matter since both Bauer and Berlin classes would remain in service for decades.

Problem was that German command feared of Chinese expansion plans. If not careful Germania could find itself invaded and with much smaller navy would stand no chance against Imperial Chinese navy despite fact that Imperial navy was less advanced. Command wanted one class of cruiser that could be build en mass, ship that could eliminate opponent faster then predecessors.

Of course production of last batches of Bauer and Berlin was to continue, originally these ships were to case with production and all incomplete ships were to be scrapped but rising tensions with Chinese Empire scratch that plan and allow simultaneous production of both Bauer and Berlin together with new Odin class and this end as good thing because only months before GNS Odin was commissioned in service, Germania and Chinese Empire end in war. Production of first two ships GNS Odin and GNS Thor was simultaneous. These two ships were to be prototypes. Construction was bugged with design problems which needed to be fixed this slow the production of the two ships. When war started, work on two ships was rushed. Odin itself was actually launched before war started and started six month trials, it was rush from the yards due German-Chinese tensions, while Thor was plagued with problems and after launch was forced to return to dock due many malfunctions.

Odin finished third month of trials when command decide that they want to see what this new cruiser is capable of. They want trial by fire and war was perfect to test it. Almost everyone objected on this, from Odin's trial captain to the design team. But even with that she would participate in final battle of the war, battle of Shanxi where she would prove her self. Her captain was angry at command believing that ship that was not fully tested and not even commissioned into fleet cannot participate in war. But ship with some minor problems prove herself as most dangerous of German cruisers. During the Battle of Shanxi, Odin was command ship for 34th Attack wing, composed of itself, four heavy cruisers, four light cruisers, ten destroyers and ten frigates. This fleet engage Imperial forces in such manner (thanks to skills of Odin's captain) that German attacking wing tore thought port flank and destroyed over two dozen enemy ships. Odin itself destroyed ten on its own and share at least four to five other kills before disengage. Battle of Shanxi was all proof needed. War ended before Thor or any other Odin class ships could be ready.

Odin packs impressive arsenal. It carry nine 380mm Phased laser beam cannons which are located in three triple barrelled turrets. Two located on front and one on back. This guns are larger and more powerful then Berlin's 320mm cannons and have longer range. There is two 180mm dual barrelled pulse laser turrets, located on sides of bow, low damage but fast firing, excellent for crippling and finishing smaller and medium sized ships. Ship have 90 cell VLS for anti-ship missiles, 80 side missile launchers for short to medium ranged anti-ship anti-air(air-bomber-missile-torps) missiles. Eight bow mounted torpedo launchers for standard fusion anti-ship torpedoes and also eight large Onix anti-ship torpedoes that were located on the sides of the ship. Ship is also well defended with short to medium range defense weapons. It carry 82 single 40mm Pulse lasers that are placed all around ship creating defense grid, making sure that nothing get close. Two 60mm auto cannons were also placed near bridge section for additional defense.

Most advanced electronic warfare systems and electronic counter measures were installed on board this class, which allows it to hijack enemy ships and to defend itself from hijacking. Its shields are at least fifteen percent stronger then shields on board Berlin class, having more capacity and faster recharging. Armor itself is also stronger and heavier. It also carry 24 shuttles and 24 fighters.

Power plant, the MW105 Antimatter reactor that was used on Berlin was replaced with brand new one MW110 which gives 20% more energy output. General appearance of engine block is basically the same as that of Berlin as Odin use the same components and trust engines, only the reactor was changed. Lower sail remain the same, slightly modified but trust engine on it was same as one on Berlin. Upper sail have some inner sensor technologies upgraded but was otherwise the same.

Odin class combat cruiser truly deserve to be called after Germanic/Nordic deity Odin. Which was associated with wisdom, healing, knowledge but most notably war and battle. And since this class of cruiser is created for war, it was appropriate name.

Since end of war with Empire (seven years ago) 46 Odin class combat cruisers were constructed with dozen under construction and over a hundred planned.

Odin class combat cruiser is 650m in length and have 900 crew.
