Description

Heavy cruiser type starships have very important role in German navy, these ships were larger and carry larger armament and better defenses then light cruiser. While light cruiser is well armed and have decent defenses, heavy cruisers are those who take charge in combat. These ships together with destroyers and battleships move in tight formations, blasting everything in front of them and were able to survive quite a beating. While destroyers and light cruiser form most of the German wolfpacks there is usually one heavy cruiser that is command ship of the wolfpack, but in fleet engagements this ships stay close to the battleships, carriers and dreadnoughts.

Berlin class is the last class of heavy cruiser before new type of ship, combat cruiser enter service. Berlin is probably most famous class in the human territories, probably second only to the United Earth Coalition Rome class. Berlin class is well rounded ship, with powerful arsenal and strong defenses (both active and passive).

Main weapons are six 320mm Phased laser beam cannons that were placed in three double turrets, two on the front and one on the back. These guns have quite good range and are very accurate. 80 VLS missile launchers carry's brand new generation of anti-ship missiles, once launched these missiles are very hard to intercept and in over 85% cases hit the target, no matter the targets defenses. 40x fast firing missile launchers that carry anti-air missiles. Fast missiles that could be fired in such short intervals that could create defensive swarm of missiles that will destroy any enemy missile, torpedo or enemy support crafts like fighters or bombers. These missiles have short to med range, and are defensive weapon only, but could be used against enemy ship if get to close, although no enemy ship would survive long enough to get close. There is also four 270mm Phased pulse laser cannons on bow. 4x bow mounted (sides) torpedo tubes for anti-ship torpedoes. This torpedoes are medium ranged but were nothing in comparison to the Onix type torpedoes that are fired from port and starboard launchers. These torpedoes are big and sluggish but they can destroy every type of ships from corvette to heavy cruiser with one volley, Onix is unique to the German navy as it is capable to negate enemy shielding and achieve hit on the hull itself, only Japanese and United Earth Coalition ships have counter-measures against Onix (so far).

There is 54 single 40mm Pulse lasers all around ship that can defend ship against enemy fighters, bombers or missiles and torpedoes There is also 2 60mm Auto cannons for short range defenses. Berlin is equipped with jammer chaffs, advance ECM systems. It can carry total of 25 shuttles and 24 fighters.

It has quite strong defenses. Powerful shields and very strong and resilient armor. Ship despite size is very maneuverable. Ship is 600m in length and have crew of 920.

Berlin class is some 20 years old. Originally around 400 of this heavy cruisers were to be built as a part of massive German buildup to counter Chinese navy (which to this date remains as largest navy in the known human space). However only 145 ships were constructed before full cruiser production shifted to Odin class combat cruiser which was to be best of both light and heavy cruiser types.

SK means Schwerer Kreuzer or heavy cruiser. All 145 ships were named after German cities on Earth.

Berlin class is probably most known because of unfortunate border war between Germania and Chinese Empire. War which started over border dispute and last for over two months prove that German navy despite far smaller was more then capable of holding giant like China on its own. It was not only capable to hold but to kick Imperial navy back and even attack Chinese systems.

Berlin class participate in all battles of this short but bloody war. Only this class destroyed over two hundred Imperial ships alone, without suffering a single loss on its own side, few dozen ships were out of service and later repaired but none destroyed. Reason to this is that as mentioned this ships were well protected. Heavy shielding which was quite strong and fast on recharging, very resilient armor which really prove itself in heat of combat but mostly thanks to advanced ECM systems where German ships could jam Chinese ships even hacking its systems and rendering them useless and easy to destroy. Imperial navy was big but suffer of one very large problem. To maintain such large force there were cutbacks needed and it is this cut backs and inferior technology of Imperial ships that saw such massive losses. First, none of Chinese destroyers carry shields, sure those destroyers were well armored but armor itself wont protect ship forever. Frigates itself has weak armor and no shields. Cruisers, no light cruiser carry shields, heavy cruiser have but those were not strong. Only Chinese battleships and dreadnoughts had powerful defenses and crew on smaller ships were mostly conscripts.

But it is thanks to its superior technology and better crew training that Germania survived this short and bloody war.

At the time of war, 86 cruisers of Berlin class were in active service, and it would be wrong to add few of the notable ships when almost all of them participate in war. Despite 145 ships were produced and work on new Odin class already started few years ago, German command considers another batch of 60-80 of this ships due high success in recent war. And with new border issues against Empire and possible Russian Federation, this class will be needed more then ever, working side by side with Odin class combat cruiser.
