History:

Shania class is one of ships created after Wolf 359, while not really for combat against Borg, it was more as heavy partrol vessel to be deployed on borders when larger more powerful ships were recalled home, however class wasn't move from its original designs as more capable ships start entering service. However after contact with Dominion, things start to change. By 2373 project was again moved and in quite a short time prototype ship and later lead ship of the class USS Shania was launched from San Francisco yards. While Shania class perform quite good in many of its trials, many believed class was underpowered and underarmed, her warp engine was weak and she couldnt keep with new fleet and even older ships received brand new warp cores which were far stronger what she had. By the 2374 and start of Dominion war, USS Shania received new warp core which wasnt really improvement in speed over old one but it feed more energy and thus weapons were more effective since they use energy directly from warp core. During the first months of war over forty of this ships were built and deployed against Dominion. While initially they didn't perform as they should, once Captain Sisko returned with captured Jem'Hadar attack ship, and improvements were made to all Starfleet ships including Shania, class start to perform as it was intended. It could easly destroy Cardassian Hideki, Rasilak or Sartan class ships but were not strong enough to go toe vs toe against Galor or any other large ships. Shania could however deal with Jem'Hadar attack ships or populary known bugs by Starfleet.

It would often be deployed in groups (wolfpacks) and engage lone Dominion ships, which would often result in successful destruction of Dominion ship they targeted. In fleet battles they would use as pickets, defending larger Starfleet vessels against Jem'Hadar attack ships, Hideki's or other smaller ships. However by 2375 Cardassians deploy brand new class, Norin class destroyer, which prove to be thorn in Shania's side, this new destroyers were quite strong and deadly, they always work in pairs and could easly destroyer Shania class or even larger Miranda's and Norway classes, Breen firgates would also prove to be challenge for Shania class.

Shania carry four Type VII Phaser arrays but during the war many of Shania class ships receive stronger Type VIII phasers. This phasers had more then enough power to pierce shields of smaller Dominion/Cardassian ships and then destroy them easly with torpedoes. Shania was originally designed to have three torpedo tubes, two on the front side and one on aft, but only two on front were actually installed, during the war, third was installed as intended on aft. Its defenses were moderate, Starfleet believed that its high sub speed would be its best card and that more armor was not needed as well stronge shields since it would drain more power from warp core and unlike many other Starfleet ships, Shania lacked in strong secondary power generators.

While class would be built in mass to replace losses, it would also suffer heavy losses, from 414 ships built, 337 would be lost between 2374 to 2385, leaving only 77 in service by 2390. After Dominion war, production would continue until 2379-80, when it would stop, remaining ships continue serve as defensive ships for large starbases.

Shania design was basic one, it consist of primary hull which also holds warp core(engineering), and nacelles connected with pylons. Its tiny shuttlebay is on the aft of the ship while bridge is in heavily armored cocoon on the top. Class lack any luxury, it is spartanical in decour as it would be find on Klingon B'Rel bird of preys, it doesnt have any science equipment on board nor any entertaiment for the crews. It was simple armed patrol ship for short duration missions (few days).

Class was not really considered success with Starfleet command, despite it did its role valiantly, it is expected that class would be retired by 2410.
