Description This is Alternate History.

Background: The treaty of versailles is turned into one giant plebiscite for the people to decide whether to stay with Germany or leave to their respective nations.

Post World War One Germany is in a state of turmoil as factions all vie for power. The grand plebiscite of Versailles is decided to be enacted. The fate of Germany, Austria and the German speaking world is in the hands of the people. A New Germany Emerges, having lost some lands and having gained some lands. Austria joins Germany as a unitary state by a margin of 4% over the necessary 51%. Other regions such as Β memel stay within Germany by obtaining the minimum necessary vote. Civil strife ravages the plebiscite regions.

NOTE:
Was experimenting with new projections and statistics in maps. I know it's not perfect or very traditional but I think broadening my horizons is something I have to start doing more with maps instead of sticking to one style.

Very interesting and original point of view for this map!
It is also relatively well illustrated!
I wonder why there would be a single referemdum for the Polish Corridor and Posen convined instead of individual referendums for each regions?

Thank you very much for noticing my comment!
As constructive criticism: I suppose that if you remake this map, you should adjust the result of the Austrian referendum, given that by 1919, over 90% of Austro-Germans were in favor of union with the rest of Germany.
I also believe that you should review the referendum results in the Alsace-Lorena Eupen-Malmedy regions.

How does Austria only join Germany by 51%? In our timeline Austria voted to join Germany by like 90% in some referendums, they saw no other option but to join Germany when the empire collapsed. Also, did the Bolsheciks fuck up worse in their war with Poland? As a lot of people in the corridor area voted to stay with Germany as the Polish state was at risk of being taken over by the Bolsheciks

I think what's even more unrealistic is Eupen-Malmedy willingly secedingΒ

Something like that, I wasn't really thinking too deeply into this scenario this was more to test out a new projection style

Strange, it seems like the Allies took advantage of Alsace-Lorraine by grouping it as one area instead of splitting into Alsace and Lorraine, seeing that Alsace alone would most definitely wish to stay in Germany and Lorraine would probably want to rejoin France. Also Eupen-Malmedy is most definitely German, though perhaps they were Germans that disliked Germany??

vorarlberger In reply to 19111995 [2019-02-11 00:18:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, in Eupen Malmedy there was always some distrust against Prussia. From the church organisation, they were for a long time part of the Diocese of Liège. And they were part of the Austrian Netherlands. So they have already a historical link to Belgium.

Also Alsace and Lorraine have been a part of France for almost 300 years and the also were unsatisfied with Germany. Until 1911 they had restricted rights in comparison to the rest of Germany. So a pro France vote is possible.

Or perhaps the Allies could have rigged the vote to make the region join Belgium?

This was completely made up; I barely put any effort into the actual elections as most were "staged" in this scenario. But you put in an interesting thought!

RogueLeader1000 [2017-06-01 04:27:24 +0000 UTC]

I think some of your projections are off. For one, Eupen-Malmedy is entirely German, so it would have almost certainly voted to rejoin or remain with Germany And Elsass-Lothringen is mostly German, not French, at this time. It would have made more sense to split the plebiscite among the Sub-Regions of Elsass-Lothringen in order to ensure a more favorable result for both sides. Also there was a substantial German population in the Polish Plebiscite regions, which would have skewed the numbers more in Germany's favor, and in fact, many Poles may have voted to stay with Germany, so this plebiscite could have gone for Germany. It make more sense to split the plebiscite between Posen and West Prussia. Also, most Austrians were generally in favor of joining Germany after the collapse of their Empire, so the vote probably wouldn't have even been that close.

So beautiful, I love the endresult!

Those projections are the best, I should do more of those too.

Too bad they didnΒ΄t allow plebiscites for all german-speaking regions bordering Austria too.
Tyrol could be interesting in such a scenario.

red = leave germany, no union; further decisions on land will be made in secondary vote.
green = join germany, union.

May I ask, why is Eupen-Malmedy voting to join Belgium? Aren't they overwhelmingly German?

You could guess that there's enough of a mix for the Belgians/French to hold their own whilst a large proportion of Germans are keen to jump ship.

Really interesting concept. Alternate history is nice and it's an interesting vision.

About the technique, I like the effects and the projections. It's a nice job.

Just a question, why didn't make a separate plebiscite for the Dantzig region ?

Mostly because it's too small for me to add and make a name under it. Otherwise I would have, I just barely had enough room for memel and Sopron. Thank you for the support!
