Description Catalonia, Catalunya, Catalonha.
Following recent events I decided to make a map of the region if their referendum becomes successful.

Coat of Arms at the top right created by I saw his fantastic rendition of a new Coat of Arms and decided to ask to use it.
Original Here

------

Following the Independence referrendum of 2017, Catalonia became the newest nation in Europe. A civil disaster still looms over the new nation as Spain attempts to keep Catalonia under Spanish control as an Autonomous Territory. Catalonia's fate lies in it's new government, the European Union, and international recognition.

Tabarnia (which includes the cities of Barcelona and Tarragona) is the area of Catalonia where the vast majority of the population does not plan to separate from Spain. In the event of a hypothetical independence from Catalonia, Tabarnia would separate from Catalonia to remain part of Spain. The Aran Valley was never Catalan and they do not speak Catalan, but Aranese, which is a variant of Occitan. In the event of a hypothetical independence from Catalonia, Arán would separate from Catalonia to remain part of Spain.

We talk about hypothetical cases, because we Catalans mostly do not want to separate from our country, which is none other than Spain.

The "Valley of Aran" (the word "Aran" comes from the basque language for "valley") is part of the occitan nation but under catalan administration.

Since the romanization it has been "always" occitan but it was conquered by different rulers in 2 firsts centuries of the years 1000s. In the XIII century it was (again) part of the aragonese crown (there isn't any evidence of how they could regain the control of it) but i the XIV century the king of Aragon agreed to give to Aran a high degree of autonomy with the privileges of the " Querimonia" and allowed the developement of the institutions, society and culture of the Valley.

In modern times is integred inside Catalonia (because a queen of Spain reformed the regions, revoked Aran institutions and put it inside the Lleida province), but the Parliament of Catalonia after the restitution of the Catalan government after the Francoist dictatorship legislated the return of the historical institutions of the Valley of Aran (the Conselh Generau d'Aran [legislative] and Sindic d'Aran [executive]/ General Council of Aran and "Syndic" of Aran) and in 2015 the catalan parliament expanded the powers of the Aranese government and granted their right to self-determination. Catalonia Parliament in their new "Law of juridical transition and foundation of the Republic" (this law has to act as a magna carta until the approval of a constitution) have granted the status of Aran as a people, meaning they will have the rights recognized for the peoples under the international law (as self-determination, self-ruling...).

The french administrative institution of "Occitània" also have a "part of Catalonia" inside them. Catalans and Occitans are brother nations (catalan evolves from the occitan spoken in the first centuries of the 1000s) and we share a lot of songs, history, traditions and recipes.

Why is only Roussillon claimed by Catalonia, but not the rest of Catalan countries (e.g. Andorra, Valencia, Balearic Islands, etc.) ?

matritum [2017-10-06 19:36:19 +0000 UTC]

Very good work, it's nice. Although it's surprising you had included the Castilian name of some localities instead of Catalan one (for example, you wrote Gerona instead of Girona and this is a very independentist town... XD). You didn't write ortographic accents too and they are very important in both languages (for example, you should write Perelló instead Perello, or El Perelló, in Catalan). I also see two more important mistakes:

  • Roquestas instead of Roquetas (Castilian) or Roquetes (Catalan).
  • San Feliu de Guixlos instead of Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
But I know you are not Catalan or Spanish, so you are forgiven... XD

yeah I was told by another guy that some of the names were in the wrong language, the issue was that I was using multiple maps as reference and they all had different names

I like the map, although you should have written the towns names all in catalan. For example: Gerona (spanish) - Girona (catalan) or San Carlos de la Rapita (Spanish) - Sant Carles de la Ràpita (catalan). Most of them are ok, anyway.

I've changed it now

ramones1986 [2017-10-05 12:24:52 +0000 UTC]

Nice map, although I found it ironic that a monarchic crown is the crest in the Catalonian coat of arms despite proclaimin itself as a republic; it's either better to use the emblem of the Generalitat for the Catalan Republic or use the more historical official name "Principality of Catalonia" to justify the use of the crown.

By the way, what could have happen to RTVE in Catalonia?

Well Bulgaria uses a crown, so does Hungary and Serbia. And it looks like Romania might too in the near future since they've already replaced the crown on the eagle's head. The crown can be taken as a symbol of sovereignty. Though ofc the sentiment of the people doesn't have to and often doesn't listen to reason when it comes to heraldry

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ramones1986 In reply to SoaringAven [2017-10-05 13:59:57 +0000 UTC]

I see... Although the crown in question is that of the Aragonese domains (Crown of Aragon).

There you go, so it's also a unique crown linked to the region

IEPH In reply to ramones1986 [2017-10-05 12:29:17 +0000 UTC]

I feel that the lozenge version of the coat of arms would be most appropriate.

As for RTVE Cataluña, (if the country wasn't destroyed by Spain already) most likely it would be merged with CCMA/TV3

Most likely, but will they maintain their studios in Sant Cugat?

Silas-Coldwine [2017-10-05 12:05:47 +0000 UTC]

Good, but a small detail. JxSi (Together for Yes) is a coalition between the right-wing European Catalan Democratic Party, and the left-wing Republican Left of Catalonia. What they have in common is their support of a YES result in the past referendum. An independent Catalonia, I guess, would neutralize the coalition's reason to be. So, should Puidgemont remain president, he would be so as the leader of the European Catalan Democratic Party or PDECAT. That's just my guessing, though.
