Actually, the "Invader Dib" finale was setting up an alliance between them and even in an earlier episode, it was being considered that ZIM take Gaz to an amusement park to get a better grasp on human relations.

It's not exactly girl has crush on guy and guy has crush on girl and neither know it nor do anybody else. It's more like neither acknowledge the others existence until mentioned or it matters to them.

Yet, their union was one of the confirmed as locked-in ideas for the series finale, as admitted by head writer Eric Trueheart himself. Also, Richard Horvitz ship teases all ZIM-related pairings and Melissa Fahn is not afraid to admit she likes ZAGR, making a cheeky comment about it when Rikki Simmons as GIR says he wants a pregnancy starter test kit after one fan asks about what they'd want at a ZIM franchise theme park (when bringing up the subject of testing and whatnot, Melissa openly says, "You can have one be Gaz and the other be ZIM", prompting a murmur from the audience and a bemused expression from Richard).

Plus, with the recent comic out, the writers - Jhonen and Eric - can finally do things the way they intended, as comics have less stringent standards than a TV show does.

Ikr? The show's humor was dark enough. Dib was originally supposed to die. In my opinion that would have sucked. I've seen present day Dib and HOLY CRAP!

I know this is old, but that's because Dib hadn't moved from his post to spy on ZIM since the show ended. Now THAT is dedication to your work. Of course, ZIM forgot most of everything. Meanwhile, Gaz just ignored everything and went about her life, until even see started wondering just when it would get her brother to move and start living again. It took a ZIM comeback, that's what.
