Description The Tenrec people of Lemuria thrived after the fall of the false gods. Already steeped in agricultural tradition they began to make great flourishing cities of mud brick and adobe plaster and tended carefully cultivated gardens that produce foods and medicine for the academies of the beaked doctors in the northern lands.

Their cities and farms spread through the river valleys and around the oasis lakes of Lemuria. Family farms that produced medicine and spices for export while still providing the subsistence farming needs of the local population were the most common model for life.

In the city center there was usually a complex with a cistern and storage silos from which trade between the surrounding communities and the big Academic guilds was orchestrated. The households could see to themselves but produced enough excesses to endure natural disasters and get fair prices for their exports.

As time went on they learned to purify and distill many of the drugs an tinctures locally. Making the process even more efficient. Secure in a world free from internal conflict the farms of the tenrec and lemur folk of Lemuria became endless cultivars of raw materials that fuel the expansion of the Confederation of worlds.

The simple happy lives of these content and idealistic villages provided the origin base for a multi-world network that would begin incorporating and protecting worlds from the old bonds that had previously suppressed them. These humble looking farms were some of the first places cultivated the movement that would become the "New Kingdom of Heaven"

So reduced manning from the quarantine gave me time to make one of the most complex landscape pictures I've produced so far. I would love to have more time to keep churning out work like this. It makes me so happy just to explore this picture. I love getting to share part of the world in my mind with all of you.

It was really satisfying to do something this intricate. I'm going to have to draw these tenrec towns again.

... so is this related in any way to your plague doctor art?

Just an observation on there muzzles?

This takes place in the same world as the Ispatian Beaked Doctors. The tenrec people produce most of the plants used in their medicine. The Plague doctors can travel to and operate throughout a number different worlds but this is a part of the original world they started their work from. Also yes those beaked masks often hide the face of a lemur or tenrec about as often as a human one.

A very expansive scene -- The background landscape and the clouds look really nice.  Seems like they are doing some specialized farming, which piques my curiosity.  What are they growing in the honeycomb-like plot?  Great work as always!

Those are plants being grown for botanical compounds. Plants can be made more potent in different chemicals by timing when you fertilise or stress them. The little honeycomb plots save water and let the growth cycle of the plant be carefully controlled.

These buildings in the background remind me an architecture of Timbuktu... Was this your references?

Yes, I took a lot of influence from the architecture in Mali.

The detail and the effort you spent on writing the backstory just blows me away. Clearly, for you, this is a labor of love.

This took up about three days to make. This is the sort of work I most enjoy making but the time demand holds me back from making more like this. I'll try to keep doing these while I can.

If there's one thing I am terrible at and am terrified to attempt is large scale landscape pictures like this. I envy your drawing abilities. Also my favorite character in this is that bird chillin' on the fence.

Zaphkiellane In reply to OtterFotter [2020-04-21 10:47:14 +0000 UTC]

It's something I'm having to work on myself, but it is totally worth the effort. Doing something like this is tedious. That bird is a hoopoe. I have always found them fascinating and like slipping them into my drawings.

I find that comic very interesting now that I've had the chance to study it. I've been playing around with the idea of people colonizing a post apocalyptic world from an alternative timeline. Your comic made me want to start playing with that idea again.
