I can imagine some very interesting scenarios here - you've inspired me. But first - where's book!Hiccup's ever-present helmet?! I miss it.
My impromptu headcanons:
1) Movie!Hiccup and Movie!Toothless can't speak Dragonese; therefore, Hiccup has no idea that book!Toothless is cursing and moaning until book!Hiccup politely points it out; movie!Toothless has no idea how to react when book!Hiccup begins trying to speak to him; Toothless assumes he's mentally deficient and responds with sympathy.
2) Movie!Hiccup's way to deal with book!Toothless is the ignore method. Toothless wines, Hiccup goes about his business as usual. If he asks for a favor and Toothless goes on strike, Hiccup shrugs and walks away. This reduces the number of Toothless Tantrums significantly, because movie!Hiccup is no pushover.
3) Book!Hiccup quickly realizes that Dragonese is getting nowhere with movie!Toothless, and thus is completely out of his depth without a "real" method of communication, and mostly marvels at his size and speed, and wonders whether movie!Hiccup doesn't have a bit of Hysteric in him for all that amazing inventing.
4) When they return to their own dragons, movie!Hiccup just casually starts scratching Toothless behind the headfins and grins at book!Hiccup, who lets Toothless scramble up onto his shoulder. They begin to converse, both becoming increasingly annoyed, while movie!Hiccup and Toothless look on in confusion.
And this is just the beginning...

Haha, love your response so much.
Book!Hiccup's helmet, while definitely prominently present in the novels, is absent intentionally because I wanted to emphasize appearance differences, and as you know his sticking-up red hair is completely covered by the helmet when he's wearing it. The two Hiccups would look more similar if I put the helmet on, but I wanted to make it very representationally clear that we were dealing with the two different movie/book personas. In other illustrations with book!Hiccup I've kept the helmet because you're right, it is an important component of his appearance (though I do want to draw him with the Slavemark sometime soon).
All your headcanons made me smile and laugh. They are so true. Can totally imagine it all happening. With #3, Book!Hiccup would be so lost and unable to control or get anywhere with movie!Toothless - how do you control or do anything with a dragon without Dragonese? I can also imagine with #2 that first the Toothless Tantrums would increase and Berk would undergo a lot of unhappy incidences until book!Toothless finally gives in and realizes strike won't work.
Not only is the boys' meeting of each others' dragons entertaining and full of potential for great crossover art/story material, but the boys meeting themselves and the dragons meeting themselves would be sure to spark interest. I can only wonder how book!Hiccup would feel seeing movie!Hiccup without a leg (does he feel uncomfortably reminded of Alvin the Treacherous and his missing limbs?), and the two of them swapping stories about their adventures or complaining together about Stoick not understanding them or movie!Hiccup asking book!Hiccup what it's like to have a mother... While at the same time the two Toothlesses just CANNOT get along. Movie!Toothless would probably get really annoyed at book!Toothless in a similar way that movie!Toothless got irritated at the Terrible Terrors taking his fish in the first HTTYD movie. And I can imagine book!Toothless getting jealous and saying all sorts of insults against the other dragon to try to justify to himself how HE, the little Common or Garden Dragon, is SO superior because he can talk, he can do this, he can do that, can movie!Toothless do that? noooo. And while I think the two Hiccups would get along with each other, Toothless One and Toothless Two would have more than their share of entertaining problems and the two boys would have to run in and intervene.

I haven't been on dA in forever, and looking at this made me smile so uncontrollably. All the feels come rushing right back! I may need to incorporate my headcanons into my drabble series. XD
Okay, I understand about the hair now. I feel like that has more headcanon fodder - if movie!Hiccup saw it, with its missing horn, and asked, book!Hiccup would probably shrug and explain he was almost killed by a classmate. Cue the dramatic eyebrow raising. "I mean, the other kids on Berk never exactly LIKED me, but homicide might be taking it a bit far..."
I wonder about sentience. Book!Hiccup & Toothless would probably assume that movie!Toothless isn't really any more than a dumb beast. That is, until they witness the incredibly intelligent communication between movie!Hiccup & Toothless. It's funny, because the book!Dragons are basically human, personality-wise. Yes! Tantrums! Poor book!Hiccup would be so miserable, having to bow to every whim and deal with his childish dragon!
About the leg: why has no one else thought of this?? When I first read the books (post-movie obsession) one of the first things I noticed was Alvin's missing limbs. I feel like book!Hiccup would be a bit taken aback, and astonished beyond belief at the story!
I also feel that book!Hiccup would be the perfect person for movie!Hiccup to vent to about Valka.
Yes! Book!Toothless would think himself better in every way. That is, until movie!Toothless really shows him what's what.
At the end of their encounter, I think both pairs would be a little envious of the relationship the other had. Movie!Hiccup would probably love to talk to movie!Toothless (and probably book!Toothless, too!) and is jealous that his book counterpart's little friend has the ability to express himself in words. Book!Hiccup would likely be jealous that movie!Hiccup and movie!Toothless actually get along so well and enjoy spending time together over all else, and they work as such a seamless unit.

Yes. Toothless is himself a bit of a sass-master. Must pick it up from Hiccup... I suppose you've seen Crownflame's comparison of Book! and Movie! Hicctooths? While I think the boys would get along famously, even some dedicated cajoling and bribery probably wouldn't get the dragons to like each other.
Yes, so much. Movie!Hiccup would be so self-conscious, because apparently people don't lose limbs so much in book!Hiccup's world! I have a feeling they would both view the other's society as slightly even more barbaric than their own!
Really! Now that I think about it, that does seem obvious. I was caught up on the Hiccup/Toothless relationship, as I always am. The relief would probably pervade the jealousy, though. Do you think movie!Hiccup would try to learn Dragonese? Do you think he and movie!Toothless would ever be able to communicate in a way like that? I lean towards not, because I just can't consider movie!Toothless's mind working like that - in a linear, expressible way. More animalistic, I suppose. Prone to the rapid, dramatic mood swings that Hiccup elicits from cuddly teddybear to ravaging creature of the night.

No, I don't think I have seen Crownflame's comparison. At least, I don't recognize the name Crownflame. Sorry about that! And I agree with you... the dragons would have more to work out. movie!Toothless would be skeptical of book!Toothless, and book!Toothless would just be his... obnoxious self. XD
I totally think movie!Hiccup would try to learn Dragonese. He'd get excited about it - another way to connect with dragons! (even though it wouldn't work with the movie!dragons, who definitely don't speak the language). I can't imagine the movie!dragons speaking languages for so many reasons. Heh... I'm actually a linguist, so yeah. XD

Of course, now that I say something, I can't find it. Crownflame's an Awesomesauce member of the old-HTTYD fandom. She hasn't been active in a while, but her work's a joy. (It may have been Contralissimo, same story). Either way, there's a blackboard comparing the two boys and their dragons, with a Hiccup on each side. Then, one is like, "Where's Toothless?" and movie!H is like, "I don't like the way your Toothless was looking at my Toothless..." And in the corner frame, book!T is laughing at movie!T struggling underwater in his collar and such, because only book!dragons have gills. (It's funny, not tragic. I gave it a tragic spin somehow by describing it.) Haha, yes. Book!T is so obnoxious. I'm sure you know that Terrible Terrors were designs for book!T; I wonder whether "Not So Fireproof" is a crossover of its own? Toothless smackdown.
He'd be obsessed. He'd be soooo obsessed. (You need to read "To Be God-Touched" and "Umbreytingu". Like, now. Hop to it.) People wouldn't even want to be around him, because he'd be all eagerly talking in Dragonese to all the book!Dragons. (I wonder how they would tolerate this.) He would probably be so disappointed that the movie!dragons wouldn't understand him - again, Toothless concerned for Hiccup's mental health, although it's his Hiccup this time - but wouldn't give up quickly.

Aha, I see. XD Yeah I only got involved in the HTTYD fandom last year, so I'm no old time member and don't know much about that. But I love what you're describing! That's really fun.
I can totally imagine it as you describe it. XD (I will admit I have -100% time to read fanfics and I just... don't read them?)

That's so great that it showed up again on the alerts! I've never had that luck before with pieces others had put into storage. Sometimes doing a Google search and going through the cache has saved me.

Not sure yet, Cressida Cowell (the author) had some eye surgery so that slowed up her writing. But the good news is it went well and she is back to writing! Here is a quote from her web site
"Thank you for all your kind emails and letters about my eye surgery, it went very well in the end thank you, and although I do have to have a bit more, it won't be for a couple of years now, so I am back hard at work on the 12th and final book."
