Toriel emotionally helped Gaster a lot when he first killed, and as seen in this one, Gaster thought that Toriel had died. Does that mean that Gaster, thinking Toriel dead, started the project in hopes of avenging her in some way?

I think Gaster started Β the skele project out of fear of losing another important person to him. This person I assume being Asgore. In real Undertale canon ,Asgore killed the humans that fell into the underground to obtain their souls. Aka their being a myths that with seven human souls the barrier could be broken. Asgore would then have to absorb the souls and become something like a GOD to be able to Β free everyone. He'd also probably die or never be himself again after that. Gaster thinking Β that Tories is dead, doesn't want to lose Asgore as well. So Gaster started looking into different ways to free the monsters. There that's my theory.Β
