No one is happy with this.
Gaster normally wouldn't take risks with the beams when Sans is involved (Papyrus less so ) but when you're really tired and stressed out , you can get careless. Sans caught him completely off-guard, which is why the beams did as much damage as they did.
The beams give off a strong warning magical aura of danger, as Gaster mentioned here , thus the brothers have never toyed with them themselves. Although Gaster probably also laid out the risks of messing with the beams when they were younger, you may see a goofy comic about that at some point.

pap has a condition called stockholm syndrome you and i watch it from a distance for us it is easy to run because we know to gaster we are nothing more then lab rats to pap he is a father and he is very simple minded. in a way they not escaping at the time might have been for the best they couldn't talk to anyone and didn't know how to fend for themselves

Stockholm syndrome only happen toward the person keeping you as a slave or prisoner while seeming nice or at the very least neutral.
This never ever happened toward the one who punish you all the time, that get angry often, or that you fear ; otherwise you were mentally sick to start with.
Even with a Gaster nice at the beginning at best and neutral at worse, the syndrome is broken afterward if it had the time to happen (Gaster turning evil is felt like a betrayal if the syndrome is present).
The condition where it continues even if the person in front of you turn abusive is only though manipulation and over time, suddenly hurting them is not gonna work.
If Pap is delusional, it's from its personality directly and not from any syndrome.

Ya know I always wondered what would happen if Papyrus had turned of the beams and then healed him. Maybe Sans escaped in time and then has to save Papyrus from Gaster? I dunno just an alternate ending! 😝🤔

I think, that's because you still haven't understood, why he acted the way he did. He's emprisoned in his perspective, because he never experienced the other. So he didn't see the alternatives that Papyrus did.
