crack theory:I think that the reason why the monks were gonna wait until Aang turned 16 to tell him he was the Avatar was because I think that the Avatar reaches full potential at 16. The reason why he's still not so powerful now is that he's still only 12 (technically 112). I think that for him to meet his full power potential to beat Fire Lord Ozai, he must be 16. This is how I think they're gonna play out the whole "Time is an illusion" thing. I think somehow, with some Bryan and Mike brain power, Aang will tap into this philosophy of time being just an illusion. I do believe that he'll somehow be older by the end of the series. And this is the only way I think Kataang will work.
And this is therefore how I think Aang would look as a 16 year old. Pretty smexy, if I do say so myself.
I dig the poofy pants.

Interesting theory....
I don't think that he really suddenly jumps in power at some point, though, but that it's more of his coming-of-age--the Avatar needs to release himself from emotion and attachment. Placing the burden on his shoulders too early is disastrous--as was shown, he was confused and ran away. Which is EXACTLY why it was a mistake (though, ultimately, a beneficial one....).
He might mature in some way or another, though....physically....
Perhaps someone will die and he'll have to use some life force to bring them back--if you study the timeline, Iroh's hair greys almost overnight. They break through the outer wall and his hair is black, but when he is kneeling over Lu Ten's grave in the flashback, his hair is grey. Ozai is still quite young, as well--thirties, perhaps. How great of an age difference is there between the two brothers? Perhaps there isn't much of one--but Iroh might have spent some life force trying to bring Lu Ten back.
It looks like Aang's going off to fight the Fire Lord, though, in the final shot of the trailer....and he doesn't look older....

I suspect the reason it's "16" is because that could be the "coming-of-age" for the Avatar world in general.
for example:
(1) Sokka was supposed to have already had his coming-of-age.
(2) Yue was of marriageable age at 16.
(3) Even at 14, Azula is given quite a lot of . . . military clout.
Also, I don't understand why "Kataang" (I'm not a shipper, so I find the term weird, but, anyway) has anything to do with Aang being 12 vs. 16. The important factor is Aang's maturity level (unless you're under the illusion that this show is based on the American school system, and even then 14 year old girls have been known to fall for 12 year old boys). And if he's not mature enough by now, he certainly will be by the end of Season 3. He was far, far too immature compared to Katara for at least the first half of seaon 1. But there's such a thing as "character development."
Actually, Aang is already considerably more mature than Zuko. (But that's besides the point).
I find the "Zutara" thing sexist whenever the "Aang is too young" argument. Because ironically, the age gap for both "ships" is the same; it's just that there's an arbitrary cultural bias towards an older guy matched with a younger girl, and against a younger guy with an older girl. That's not surprising, since historically most men married girls something like 10 years younger.
But, Katara/Aang already happened in the season finale, anyway.

I'm not a KatAang fan but not against it but I was wondering about those same possibilities also because I do think he needs to sort of grow up to get the series moving (though it's doing a pretty fine job as it is w/o it) but I would love if he grew up. maybe, just maybe, I'll be convinced that he and Katara belong together because now, it only seems like puppy love and at 12, he's not mature enough for a relationship but at 16...there are possibilities
