Description a house i pass by all the time. i love the architecture, but the elderly couple who live here have bizarrely (and most unattractively) erected an incredibly ugly white metal fence all around, though i've never seen a dog (the only reason i can imagine having such a fence).

anyway, this was shot the same evening as the sunset photos following, but the sky was just dark blue - i collaged it to insert one of the sunset skies instead, for more drama

i just wish i could have joined the area where house meets sky more seamlessly... any suggestions on how i can/should have done that?

haha, no, this is not zasu's house.

my own house is very, very boring.

but my husband is a person who knows how to build or fix up houses, and he will fix up our boring house so that it is more interesting.

our house is near the house in this photo.

well, they certainly have the safety fence in place - i suspect they put it up for a pet or small grandkids, but i've never seen them with a dog - or small child.

Great shot. How did you go about adding the sky in PS?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zasu In reply to tfavretto [2006-07-23 16:58:26 +0000 UTC]

well, i actually added the building on top of the sky photo. in the photo that had the building, i selected the sky first (because that's easiest), then chose "invert selection*, then feathered a bit (that part was hard and i kept selecting different amounts, so don't remember which number i ended up with, but i was trying to not get too much of a "glow" around the buildings, yet not have the buildings look too sharp against the sky).

anyway... then i clicked on *move* and clicked and dragged the entire lower part of the image (including building and landscape), and moved it onto the image that contained the sky i wanted, then clicked on "merge layers* once i decided it looked right. to try to get rid of the glow around the building, i cloned darker sky onto the glowing part of the sky, but don't think i did it enough (but that's pretty tedious work).

Are you using Photoshop, or something else?

What I usually do in Photoshop for this type of situation, is I manually cut out most of the sky, leaving just a strip of it remaining above the foreground. Assuming the sky is fairly uniform, or is a different color than the foreground, I just go to "Select>Color Range", select the remaining sky and adjust the fuzziness until the preview shows the selection I want. Then it's just a matter of using the eraser tool to get rid of the selected sky, and you should have a fairly clean foreground layer that you can paste over a better sky.

thanks... i've copy and pasted your suggestions into a note for myself

this whole "eraser tool" thing and even using select>color range are two things i need to learn more about. i have a great photoshop cs2 book on photo editing. very easy to understand even. now i just need to start reading it

I'm not much for modern design but I do like the looks of this house. If you hadn't mentioned the line where the sky meets the house I never would have noticed it.
