When playing with my friends, I find myself often facing Nami or Fizz (hopefully not both in the same game O.O) and when I'm playing mid lane against Fizz, I'm always chatting: There's a fish in my lane. When he kills me, I say: Dumb fish.But it seems like only poor Fizz knows that he's not a fish, but a salamander. Specifically, I believe he's based off an Axolotl salamander(Sneaky designers ). Axolotl salamanders are salamanders trapped forever in larvae form and never climb to the surface and always bear their adorable external gills.
I actually have an Axolotl myself! It should come as no surprise that his name is Fizz XD

If I remember correctly I did read that Fizz is based on the "Deep One" creatures from the Cthulhu mythos: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_One
"... they had white bellies. They were mostly shiny and slippery,.... Their forms vaguely suggested the anthropoid, while their heads were the heads of fish, with prodigious bulging eyes ... and their long paws were webbed."
But there is no denying that his physical appearance resembles an Axolotl quite a lot, so it is safe to assume that the designers were influenced by that as well.

hah, nice story
i guess he's inspired by some axolotl (i want one, too!), but in the LoL wiki his trivia says that he might be an evolved form of Yordle, or that Yordles like Trist are an evolved form of Fizz (Fizz has a bit of a tail, Gnar has a tail, none of the other Yordles has one -> Fizz and Gnar are Yordle forms of ancient times)
