Description
This excerpt describes the meaning and to some degree creation of the current symbols of 24 guilds of Fayth in Erandur. The order goes from the top left to right by row.
Alchemist
- Created by the first children of the goddess Quara, the
Tameidrin
, this is one of the oldest symbols currently still used by any guild. As the faith developed, the trade of Alchemy became central to their way of life. A potion bottle, simple but full of meaning was chosen as the mark. The stylistic designs on the sides represent magic and wisdom, two qualities also tied with Alchemy. In addition to that, the six points correspond with the six species created by Quara.
Augur
– For these shaman, they chose their symbol to reflect the highest honor for guild: to become an Omamori. They are the envoys who protect souls of the deceased as they journey from the body, through the nether world, and onto the heavenly planes. They carry braziers lit with heavenly fire blessed by the god of souls,
Sabin
. This is used to help ward off the evil spirits that feast on souls. Despite being one of the oldest fayths, their current symbol is one of the newer ones in use, having gone through many revisions.
Bard
– Created by the
Aralune
, this is one of few original symbols still in use. The design echoes part of their philosophy about life: that souls of the living and dead are notes in the song of time. To be more specific, the top half represents the Chant of Harmony, “Nuria ‘Ven’sa’Halcyion,” while the bottom represents the Hymn of Solace, “Dlihra’Son’tl’Vasce.” The symbol was altered slightly and applied to the study and composition of sheet music. The idea for this was two-fold; to spread good word of their guild and compliment their way of thinking. The creation of any music can influence others by sound, mood, feeling, memory, and many other ways. In this fashion everyone is connected to one another, and while our souls may not all play the same song, they all sing.
Convoker
– The symbol of these mages has gone through perhaps the most incarnations out of all the guilds. The current one was created by the Erutan’Aldir, elves from the continent of Lyndiel. As one of the only fayths with ties that predates the Jheruan Cataclysm, the image of a scroll was chosen to emphasize their ancient beginnings. The triangular pattern is a two-fold symbol. The three outer triangles correspond to the three types of summoning magic practiced by the guild. Their placement on the scroll creates a fourth triangle can be seen in the center. This hints at fourth type of summoning that was outlawed by the guild. While nowadays it is rarely spoken about, as part of their history it was included in their symbol.
Curate
– It was not until the
Neldius
established their surface colony on Palatan that this guild of healers had a symbol. They selected a soft purple, similar to that used in their
weapons
, because of its value: majestic and heavenly, it represents divinity and religion. Each piece corresponds to the three Oaths sworn by Curates; only to wield their powers to heal or in defense of their life or that of their brethren, to fight death and disease until either takes them, and finally to study and practice the uses of medicine.
Defender
– That of the Defender’s guild is one of the simpler symbols used today. It represents the five schools of weaponry studied by them. Each based on the holy weapons wielded by the goddess Moriane herself, they are: Ono'Mati ~ the Way of the Axe, Yali'Mati ~ the Way of the Spear, Ken'Mati ~ the Way of the Fist, Mune'Mati ~ the Way of the Sword and Hanayumi'Mati ~ the Way of the Bow.
Dervish
– Brothers to the Bards, they are the only other guild to use sound as a weapon if in quite a different way. However, they chose not to concentrate on this when developing their emblem. One of their core beliefs; that in order to fully appreciate and understand life, one must focus and arouse the senses. It was this ideal that became central to their design. The soft blue color of it represents the achievement of clarity, peace and balance. The actual pattern reflects the style of meditation integral to their way of life, and the energy force released from harnessing it.
Druid
– The symbol of the Druid was created by the Erutan’Faele, children of the god of Nature and Growth, Elyryn. The design was based off the silhouette of the Sidherl plant, commonly found in many groves throughout Erandur. It was chosen because of its ability to thrive in many different environments and seasons. In addition to that, the shape of the blossoms, three leaves on each side, with the bulb in the center was thought to mimic their own relationship with the world. There is balance everywhere in nature, and while each side has 3 fronds, they do not grow to equal length. The central bulb is representative of sentient life, which rests constantly surrounded by and in the palm of Nature’s hand.
Enchanter
– The Erutan’ Aldir also created the Enchanter’s symbol. As masters of illusion and beguilement their design represents those areas. The top half is symbolic of the literyal and the mind’s eye, two realms in which their magic excels. The lower half is rumored to be copied from a piece of the Veil Rune, an ancient artifact said to be in possession by the goddess of illusion herself. Without her teachings the guild could not exist and so it was a way to pay respect, honor her and also to invoke her power and blessing.
Evoker
– Created by the Ogidna, this symbol holds great value for them. As masters of one of the oldest, and albeit simplest form of magic, destruction, they chose to represent that with flames. The energy fire emits is powerful and strong. Similarly, the symbolic flame of determination and zeal is needed to achieve. Legend says that their creator, the goddess of knowledge and magic, Diem, taught them mysticism associated with the triangular shape. That true balance can only be found in that form; even the heavenly planes are divided in three parts, each with its own ruler. So, it was decided they would combine the two into a stylistic flame burning in a triangular fashion.
Knight
– Keepers of honor and justice they have sworn to defend all that is right. For this reason a shield was chosen as the quintessential representation of their goal. While many guilds do have them, the Knight’s “rite of passage” is one of the more well known. The Leci’CKage, in which an ancient relic is used to reveal one’s darkest shadows and fears. Success depends on the initiate overcoming these. In the center of the shield is a ring of holy light. This shows their purity, dedication, and determination to extinguish the darkness of the world.
Monast
– The Monasts took a page from the Dervishes in creating their emblem. Rather than use a design that was a representation of a certain belief, they took one of an action central to their philosophies. While most guilds channel the flow of mana to use magic, a few are able to tap into another type of energy called Sasaithi. This emanates from one’s own body. The symbol is a stylized depiction of the release of such energy, the manner in which Monasts are able to use “magic.” In addition to that, these nomads were also influenced by the compass.
Necromancer
– Their symbol has gone through many changes to become what it is today. The current design is favored by the guild not only for its meaning, but also because of its representation of the guild to the world. Once looked upon with great fear and misunderstanding, they have come a long way in being regarded with respect for their arcane studies and recognized for their achievements. The upper portion is the soul of the living. The lower is the soul of the dead. The central divider is the Ilyan Veil, the supposed magical borderline which separates the worlds of the living and the dead. The complete symbol mimics the mark of infinity, echoing their idea that death is not an end to life but rather a new beginning.
Oracle
- As worshippers of the goddess of Time, they are one of very few able to draw upon the mana of Time. A great deal of their philosophy is also related to its ebb and flow. Thus, an hourglass was chosen to be their symbol. However, rather than using sand, something finite, they decided on the sun and moon. Caretakers of time that influence and control all their light can reach; they existed long before life as we know it came to be and shall continue long after we pass on.
Paragon
– Those who worship the dragon god are may be few, but they are a guild founded on loyalty and kinship. The idea for their crest was based on Laieutenae, the blood pact made by members of the guild with children of their god. Each prong on the stylized lance represents the six families of dragon-kin they are able to do so with. The droplet on the right side is blood.
Reaver
–Their current sigil did not come into being until their brothers, the Knights had completed theirs. Many claim the faith of the gods, which evolved into the guilds, were created with perfect balance. How true that is can be debated. However, in this case, it can be plainly seen. To fulfill their role in maintaining balance, they created a sigil purposely to be opposite. Rather than defense they value offence, represented by a sword. In order to suppress the light, and cast the world into chaos, dark energy reverberates from it.
Runic
– The current sigil of the Runic was designed by the dark-skinned Syndaare of Nelaue. Rune fragments had been found all over parts of the ocean even before the guild was founded. With the guidance of the god of Dreams, the guild began to take shape and grow. The process of binding a rune to oneself in the beginning was limited only to ones hand. To honor this humble start the outline of a hand was used by the Naiathan for many years. Later, as the guild matured the sigil was redrawn to include the current three swirls in the center. Each mark represents one of the three types of runes in existence.
Savage
– Worshippers of the Sun god, they believe in the strength of fire and energy it provides. During the day, its bright rays shine from the heavens. As the ultimate elemental force, it is the warmth of your soul that produces heat. Even their funeral rites end with cremation. As much of their philosophy revolve around or are guided by the sun, their crest, created by the Erutan’Suiad, is symbolic of both of flame of the soul and the warmth of the sun constantly in motion.
Strider
– The Strider crest was created by the Syfaean. As a guild, their initiation is perhaps only second to the Knights in terms of being well known. The Grar’Cail can be attempted by anyone at any time, although since failure often results in death or great injury it is rarely done without proper training. It deals with imbibing a lethal dose of poison. This is shown by the large drop-like design of their symbol. Poison was chosen as a means to strengthen one’s own will and body. The ability to drink in suffering and pain they cannot affect your constitution is greatly valued in their philosophy.
Valewalker
– The sigil of the Valewalkers was made by the Erutan’Ithil, children of the Moon goddess herself. Not every guild was as concerned with color as they were. A deep silent blue echoed their own ideas about life and peace. Spiritually and literally, they believe the night sky to be a map marked by the stars, going even so far that the greatest of heroes shine among them looking down. So their design combines the moon and stars, those which guide their every night.
Vanguard
– Like most fayths in Erandur, legend has had influence in some way. Many based on historical records were quite true and date back to very early beginnings. . However, this tale remains shrouded in mystery and has fascinated those near and far. While all species are thought of as the “children of the gods, it says that the god of strength and wisdom, Anri, did in fact have a son. During the Jheruan Cataclsym that brought the floating continents crashing into the ocean, his son was caught in the chaos. Fearing for his son’s life, he granted him wings to fly. For those who worship
Anri
, this tale is associated with strength, and victory, that he was able to survive against all odds. The symbol design was purposely a bit vague to be seen as both a set of wings and also crossed swords. That being said, there has been no record or knowledge of anyone claiming to or shown to be this person. Other guilds suspect the tale was made up to give an air of mystery to and entice people to join the guild since many looked down on their “simple” ways.
Warder
– As the scouts of one of the nature gods,
Luritem
, they aim to preserve and protect nature. Often, this is done from the silent umbra of the forest’s canopy. Known throughout Erandur for their deadly marksmanship, a bow and arrow was decided to be the best representation, if a little simple of the guild. Created by the Erutan’Faele, a species of elf that live on the continent of Lyndiel, the specific color of green was also chosen to reflect their attachment to nature.
Wildling
– Always striving to understand those they share the planet with, their crest was designed to honor such animals. They believe in the Totamori, the guardians and patron animals of the gods’ children. Each species as their own, even those who do not practice their fayth are said to have one. Crane, Badger, Fox, Bear, Owl, Turtle, Cobra, and Panther are only a few. To honor them the design forms the shape of an animal’s paw. The center pattern represents their belief in the fabric of life, the weave of existence, that all things past and present connect, each playing its part as of the whole.
Zephyst
– Those who worship the
god of storms
draw their power from the planet rather than from mana. This is done through a bond with nature achieved through a type of meditation called Karan’Lei. Their crest is supposed to reflect this through the swirls all culminating at the focal point in center. In addition to that, it also pays tribute to their god with its imagery of a storm. It was created by the Ervaj.
