I always found this idea interesting. It's kind of an exclave but is still sorta is adjacent to the US over the Gulf of Mexico. And now the US borders Guatemala and Belize lol. I'm guessing that the English variants of the place names would basically just involve dropping the acute accents xD

Yep, that's what I figured! Plus removing some of the x's in the names and replacing them with other letters.

(Chuckle) More in terms of another US state made out of bits of Mexico. I have nothing against either the US or the Maya, believe me.

It's difficult to draw a comparison with OTL, because IOTL the concept of "hispanic" as a race/ethnicity didn't really come into existence until well into the 20th century. ITTL, Yucatecan hispanics, or at least the whiter ones, were Anglicized, but the Mayans were not. They make up roughly 20-30% of the population ITTL—lower than IOTL given that a) the reason the Yucatecans tried to join the U.S. in the first place was to crush a Maya revolt, and b) the United States doesn't have the best track record when it comes to treating its natives nicely. In terms of language, an English-Spanish patois with some elements of Mayan language tossed in there is fairly widespread in the nation, but growing rarer in favor of plain English, a language which almost everyone in the state can speak thanks to public education.
