Description So continues my series of photos from the 27th June Scotland North East Morris Minor Owner's club [link] Classic and Vintage car show at Fyvie Castle.

Here's a real rarity!

Made by the group of companies which later went on to form the group we now know as Audi - Auto Union.

While Auto Union themselves may now be gone, their logo is still with us - the four rings of the logo now used by Audi themselves actually represented the four companies which made up Auto Union (Audi, DKW, Horch - should probably double check my spelling there, and Wanderer).

This sleek, tail-fin equipped coupe is a regular at shows around here, and always gets a lot of interest - there are only seven known examples surviving in the UK, and this is the only one that's actually running. Between the years of 1958 and 1965, around 5000 of these coupes were made, and around 1600 of the cabriolet version.

Not only does it look good, but it goes well too - despite only having a 981cc three cylinder engine. It manages this through virtue of being a two stroke unit, the actual power output of 55bhp being more akin to what would have been expected from a well tuned 1500cc engine of the time. It doesn't sound much today, but at the time it made this a pretty swift car - and it still has a top speed some 25mph above the motorway speed limit.

That little two stroke engine deserves a mention as well for the fantastically unusual noise it makes, and because it's a motorcycle-style unit with no valves, that it only has seven major moving parts...Quite incredible when you compare that to the many thousands probably in even a basic engine these days! In hindsight, I really should have asked the owner if I could have a look under the bonnet...Will remember next time!

It looks something a little bit special - and that's not surprising given the pricetag of nearly £2100 - equating to around £35000 in today's money, this was not a cheap car! One has to wonder how close to that value it's actually worth today too...

All in all, a lovely car and one that definitely deserves a space at any classic show like this one.

There's also a photo of this car from the rear, giving a better view of those wonderful fins, which can be viewed here: [link]

It does rather, doesn't it? Never really spotted that similarity until you mentioned it. Thanks!

That sure is a stylish little thing! It saddens me that tailfins went out of style. Even now it's a good-looking car, and when you consider the context of the times it must have looked brilliant next to what else was out there. Sounds like it would have made for quite a sporty drive too for its day, and even today would be a lot of fun.

Tailfins didn't go out of fashion, they just migrated to aircraft! ^^

Nice cat, though. Looks pretty good in white, to my surprise.

*giggles* True, aircraft without tailfins would be a lil awkward. Well I guess the B-2 pulls it off okay...

And yeah I agree, cars from that era I think DID tend to look fairly decent in white a lot of the time. White's a touchy color on cars I think, only certain ones make it look good.
